Looking For A Furrever Home

How about some high
energy sweetness?
Meet Travis!
Travis is a fixed male, 5-year-old Australian
Cattle Dog/Terrier mix who loves meeting new
people!
Travis came to us all scraped up as if he
maybe had been rolled by a car? He’s not
telling us what happened, but luckily he had no
serious injuries and healed up just fine!
This guy is energetic and fun! He’s pretty
good on a leash (still pulls a little, though)
and enjoys walks - especially when he sees a
bunny! We’re not sure how Travis is with other
animals, but we recommend a bunny-free
home for him.
Travis seems to be already house trained! And
he takes treats nicely, too.
Is an energetic and people-loving sweetie like
Travis right for you? Come in to meet
him today!
Adopt Travis!
Travis is 5 years old, neutered, current on his
vaccinations, and microchipped. His adoption
fee is just $150.
Come on in to
meet Travis
today!
2. you can’t imagine the type of responses I have
heard when I say that we don’t take them in.
Most people try to understand, but it is far too
often I hear unfavorable remarks. I am hoping
my explanation below helps people appreciate
it was not an easy decision for us to make,
but one that was necessary to continue to be
able to provide help to animals in need that are
socialized and adoptable. Basically, we just
couldn’t do it all.
The first part of the feral cat program that
makes it difficult is the shear number of feral
cats in any given area. Medina County, like
most communities, has a terrible problem with
feral, unfixed cats. In a previous article, I wrote
about the number of cats that can be born from
a single female. To cite this information again,
“The Humane Society of America reports that
one fertile cat can produce an average of three
litters in one year, which is between four and
six kittens per litter. Up to 4,948 kittens can
be born from one unspayed female cat and
her offspring in seven years.” As can see from
those numbers, one cat can change the scope
of an area single handedly, not to mention all
the other cats that join in too. So unfortunately,
many shelters that try and trap the feral cats
and kittens end up overwhelmed by the
number of intakes they have in addition to their
socialized animals. Even if we didn’t set the
traps or bring the cats in, and just took in the
amount of cats and kittens we got requested
to take, it still is a huge burden on the staff of
a shelter our size.

Director of
Operations
An animal shelter can be a complicated
charity to run when it comes to daily decisions.
Although we do our very best to service all
aspects of the countless needs that we see
daily, sometimes practical decisions have to
take priority over raw emotions. Although we
try and help without restrictions, sometimes we
can’t avoid it.
One of the hardest decisions that the Medina
County SPCA has had to make over the years,
is not to get involved in feral cat neuter, trap
and release. For someone not familiar with
this, the program includes trapping a feral cat
with a humane trap, fixing it and then releasing
it back to the area it was living. Although we
feel this type of work is so important, it can be
a huge burden on a shelters staff and financial
resources. Due to that, we felt it was in the best
interest for the shelter and the animals we help,
not to provide it. I must be honest; this decision
tends to haunt me on an ongoing basis. When
someone calls in need of help with a feral cat,
Jillian
Jillian is good with other cats, really friendly and sweet,
and has a musical meow, she is also a good biscuit maker, too!

Another problem that happens is that feral
cats and kittens are not easy to handle.
These little bundles of fur sure look like their
socialized cat family members, but when it
comes to taking care of them, all bets are
off when you need to handle them. They
scratch, bite, attack and flee, since they
have never been handled by humans. When
it comes to getting volunteers to help take
care of our shelter occupants, it is tough to
ask them to risk life and limb to feed a cat
that is ready to do harm to any human they
meet. Rehabilitating kittens is also very labor
intensive and not very successful. So, in the
end, it can overwhelm a staff that is already
stressed due to our normal intake of
socialized cats.
The last part of our decision making, was
funds. Imagine taking in a cat that needs to be
held in a special intake area, can’t be easily
handled, needs a tranquilized veterinary work
up, some shots and fixed. Then add to it that
this animal won’t be able to go through the
normal adoption process where we ask for a
small portion of our investment to be returned
in the form of an adoption fee. Then envision
that this happens over and over in a single
day, not to mention how often it would happen
in a month or even a year. The average cost
is $80.00 to provide all those items for each
cat or kitten and with intake being easily in
the double digits with cats and kittens coming
in, the funding for a program like this must be
large. So, when we looked at how long we
could sustain a program for feral cats versus
how long we could help our community with
socialized animals, the decision was not easy,
but clear that we should help animals that
we can find homes for.
As for resources that can help in Medina
County, we are very fortunate that Quickfix,
930 Lafayette Road, offers feral spay and
neuter cat rates, as well as affordable humane
trap rentals.
Feel free to call them
at 330-558-1540.
I hope this information makes it easier to
understand why the Medina County SPCA
decided not to provide this service. Our
main goal is to serve the socialized animal
community and do it the very best we can. If
you are interested in donating to our animals
in need at the Medina County SPCA, you can
reach us at 330-723-7722 for more information.

Marilyn Dlesk
Marilyn attended the MCSPCA fundraiser, Night at the Races in February and was
the grand 50/50 winner. She won $967. Even more impressive than that, Marilyn
donated back the entire amount to the MCSPCA in honor of her golden retriever
rescue dog, Baxter. Marilyn is a social worker at the Western Reserve Area Agency
on Ageing. This donation was desperately needed by our medical fund.
All of us at the MCSPCA want to send a heartfelt
thank you to Marilyn for her amazing donation!

How about some goofy
cuddles? Meet Mikey!
Mikey is a 2-3 year old Pit Bull mix fella
who likes everyone!
Bouncy and strong, walking this guy on
a leash is a great upper body workout!
He can use some training, obviously, but
he’s just so excited to go somewhere
with someone, Mikey will grab his own
leash and play tug of war with it to get
you both going! Once he gets to walk for
a little bit, he’s much better and walks on
a leash pretty well!
Mikey loves to have fun! He’s playful
and goofy, loves squeaky toys and takes
treats nicely. He may be housetrained
too, once he gets used to your schedule.
And while he’s a high energy goofball,
when Mikey finally settles down, he’s
love to cuddle and is just so sweet!
Is a strong, bouncy good boy like
Mikey right for you? Come in
to meet him today!
Mikey is neutered, current on his
vaccinations, and microchipped. His
adoption fee is just $150. If you have
an existing dog, a meet and greet is
needed to make sure that the chemistry
is right on both sides!
Please call the shelter at 330-723-7722

5. “We started with fostering just one cat who
needed a break from the shelter. Then we
took in another adult with social problems.
Thankfully our hard work paid off. Both of
those girls are happy in their forever homes
now. Once we helped those two, we decided
to foster kittens during the spring/summer
when the need for foster homes is high. This
year our focus has been fostering kittens that
needed a lot of help getting socialized. They
had a tough start, but so far, 9 out of 11 of
them have been adopted out. We still have 1
foster at home now that we have been hand
raising for a few weeks. It’s so rewarding to
work with kittens who are scared and teach
them what love is. Some people think the
hardest part of fostering is handing them off to
their new family, but for me getting to see them
go is just the best.”
Nicole has found so much joy from the
shelter she decided to apply to become a
staff member. Being patient, she finally got
the call two months ago and now can call the
MCSPCA her place of employment. “I knew it
would take a while to become a staff member.
I thought about it all the time. It felt like I was
hoping and waiting forever. When I finally got
the news I was hired, I was so happy. My new
position is kennel tech and I’m ecstatic about
it! As I volunteered, I’ve worked with cats most
of the time, now that I am in the kennel, I’m
excited to have more time with the dogs, as
well as more responsibilities.”
Nicole’s love for animals runs deep in her
household and luckily all her family members
enjoy having a rotating group of animals
to care for at home. “My husband is my
biggest helper. He does anything he is asked
of and beyond with the fosters, as well as
anything pertaining to the shelter. I could
not do this without his help and patience. My
dedicatedHearts
A sense of purpose can be found when
you least expect it and for Nicole Root, it
was hiding amongst the special animals
that are the residents within the walls of
the Medina County SPCA.
“My husband and I have had many
burdens in life and at the time that I
decided to start volunteering with the
MCSPCA, they were just piling up”,
commented Nicole. “Various health issues
with my two daughters, financial struggles,
and deaths in our family, really started
taking a toll on me. Then my world stopped
when my father passed away in 2016. I
was feeling lost and found a huge comfort
in animals. I went to the MCSPCA to adopt
a new cat early in 2017. The place felt
warm and inviting and spending time there
as we adopted our new cat gave me an
idea. I asked if they ever needed a hand at
the shelter and that’s when I learned about
the opportunity to volunteer. I attended
training and put my heart 100% into it.”
For Nicole, the last year and a half
has given her peace within. “I felt like I
belonged somewhere for the first time in
a while. It wasn’t long after I started at the
shelter I realized my interaction with the
animals was helping me, as much as I
was helping them. It has changed my life.
I don’t need to explain it to those close
to me, because I know they’ve seen the
change in my life. I have a new glow and
a drive to make a difference. The people
there are some of the best friends I’ve ever
made. They see me happy and they know
why.”
Another responsibility that Nicole took on
early in her days with the MCSPCA, is
fostering cats.

two daughters are fearless and enjoy the
challenge of teaching the foster kittens to
love.” Included in their foster fur family, they
have a spaniel/lab puppy named Gypsy,
who is about 6 months old. They also have
four of their own cats, Bella, Betty, Hazel
and Waldo. All of them are rescues and two
were the cats that brought Nicole in to the
MCSPCA. One is a foster fail. In addition,
they have two guinea pigs named Cuddles
and Kisses, also from the MCSPCA and a
tank full of fish.
When Nicole thinks back to the journey
that she has been on, she often thinks
what to tell someone who is interested
in volunteering at the shelter. For her the
moment she stepped into the shelter filled
her soul with everything she had been
missing. However, she also realizes the
hard work and heartbreak that happens
in some situations at the shelter is not for
everyone. “I have found the work to be so
rewarding at the end of the day. All I can say
to someone that thinks they might want to
volunteer is to just try it. If it isn’t for you then
ok, but if you’re like me, it can open a whole
new exciting chapter in life. Sometimes the
part that doesn’t fit for someone is being
in the shelter day to day. There are needs
outside of the walls of the shelter, like finding
donations and fostering in your home. If you
want to help, there is always something that
we need.”
The staff and volunteers want to thank
Nicole for all her hard work and congratulate
her on her new position as staff member. If
you want to join Nicole and the welcoming
people of the MCSPCA, please give us a
call at 330-723-7722 to find out more about
the ways you can help.

Look at this handsome mug.
His name is Bounce.
You may recognize Bounce - he was adopted
out some time back. Unfortunately, Bounce’s
adopter became unwell and had to move to a
nursing home. A kind neighbor notified us that
Bounce no longer had anyone to care for him...
so Bounce is back and looking for a new
home (again!)
This guy is just 1 year old, great with other cats
(not good with dogs), loves people and playing.
He’s a really great player. Bounce is also FIV
positive, which is not a big deal—it just means
that if he gets sick, he needs to go to the vet
and he needs regular checkups to keep an eye
on his dental health. Kind of like all cats, really!
Bounce is also used to working around
someone in a wheelchair, which is a good
cat skill!
Adopt Bounce!
So, if you’re looking for a handsome fella who
has gotten a couple of tough breaks and sure
could use a forever home, please come see
Bounce! His adoption fee is just $25 during our
fall special pricing!

Well, I’m not sure why they did it.
I mean, they packed up everything and left me behind. They even took my name
with them. Not sure what good my name will do them? I like to think they kept it to remember me
by. You’d want to remember a good cat, I’m sure.
When I came here, they gave me a new name—“Tundra”. It’s a bit... I don’t know, outdoorsy? I
don’t mind it, though. It’s good to have people call you something! And heck, as long as I’m getting
loving, you can call me Platypus Butt for all I care! It’s the love that’s important to me.
Speaking of love (my very favorite subject!), I’m kind of in the market for a
new person. You know, someone I can love on and be loved by? Someone
who appreciates a big, solid, lug of a cat who adores being touched.
Someone I can nuzzle and snuggle with and let them know that
they’re the world to me!
So, if you maybe know someone? Someone who needs a super sweet
and affectionate cat like me - big, solid, and a total lover—can you
please send them my way? Tell them to ask for Tundra - that’s me!
We don’t know why Tundra’s people moved away and left him
behind, either! This guy is a HUGE SWEETHEART of a cat!
What a lover! Affectionate and gentle, but big and sturdy, too!
We couldn’t even entice him into play—he just wanted pets
and cuddles!
So if a big, solid lover of a cat like Tundra is right for you, come in to meet him today!
Adopt Tundra!
Tundra is 8-10 years old, neutered, and current on his vaccinations.
His adoption fee is just $25 during our fall special pricing!

DJ
URGENT ADOPTION REQUEST
JD has been at the barn for 701 Days and Counting
Please help find him a home before it gets to 712!
We are asking you to seriously consider making room in your pasture for
this terrific horse. Two full years at an adoption center is just too long!!! JD
is looking for a miracle to happen soon. He has been at our facility for way
to long, watching his pasture mates get adopted and is looking for a forever
family of his own!!! JD is a 21-year-old, 16 hand, half Arabian gelding, who is
full of love. He has an easygoing nature and is just so happy to be with other
horses and people who love on him. Since he came from a situation where
he was by himself for quite some time, JD prefers to spend time with other
animals in a pasture, whether it be other horses, goats, alpacas, or potbellied
pigs. JD loves everyone. Are you willing to give this guy a forever home? If
you are interested in this awesome guy, please call the Medina County SPCA
at 330-723-7722 for more information. JD’s adoption fee is $250 or you can
sponsor him for $50/month.
