Wilmer McLean owned a farm where the first major battle of the Civil War took place, damaging his home. Nearly four years later, the war ended when Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union General Ulysses S. Grant in McLean's parlor. As a result of being involved in both the beginning and end of the war, McLean is quoted as saying "The war began in my front yard and ended in my front parlor." However, McLean was financially ruined by the war and his property was destroyed even after the surrender.
