Asian and Pacific American Heritage Month originated in 1977 to celebrate the heritage and contributions of Asian and Pacific Americans. The Navy recognizes the importance of diversity, with over 35,000 Asian and Pacific American service members and 29,000 civilians. Notable Asian and Pacific American Navy leaders are highlighted, including Rear Admiral Eleanor Valentin, the first female director of the Navy Medical Service Corps. The Navy engages in outreach at various events to highlight achievements of Asian and Pacific Americans.
