After the fall of Saigon and the end of the Vietnam War, many Vietnamese civilians fled their country by boat to escape the new communist government. They were put onto overcrowded and leaky boats with little food or water for the harrowing journey. Pirates threatened the boats and would sometimes rob and assault the refugees. Most refugees resettled in neighboring countries like Thailand and Malaysia or in the United States, seeking refuge from the dangers and hardships they faced at sea.
