Maximising the impact of a COVID-19 vaccine in an ageing world

ILC held a webinar where we heard from experts at Pfizer, GSK, Sanofi and MSD on how we maximise uptake of the COVID-19 vaccination among older people, and heed the lessons from the pandemic for other adult vaccinations. The scientists have done their job and the UK has started to vaccinate older people against COVID-19. But in our ageing world, how do we democratise access to the vaccine whilst also ensuring uptake is as high as possible? While childhood immunisation programmes are common and well delivered across the world, the situation for adult immunisation is very different. The levels of uptake of existing adult vaccinations against influenza, pneumococcal disease and herpes zoster remain low across most of the world. We’ve had an age-related flu vaccination programme in the UK for twenty years but we still fail to meet the WHO target of 75% uptake among older people, and uptake rates are even worse for clinical “at risk” groups. The UK does better than many countries and is arguably a world leader in terms of its approach to the vaccination of older people. But how can we build on this expertise to support uptake of adult vaccinations across the world? With an overwhelmed NHS, and many “at risk” groups and older people shielding or reluctant to get out of the home, it may be even harder to reach those most in need. This ILC webinar presented a unique opportunity to hear from medical experts in the pharmaceutical industry about how we heed the lessons of what works, based on our experience of delivering other adult vaccinations, and how the lessons from COVID-19 can help drive uptake of other vaccinations targeted at older people.

Progress on COVID-19 Vaccine Development
The document discusses progress on COVID-19 vaccine development. It outlines the typical vaccine development process, including exploratory, pre-clinical, clinical trial, and regulatory approval stages. For COVID-19 vaccines, 28 candidates are currently in clinical trials, with 6 in Phase III. This study investigated perceptions of the Covid-19 vaccine and vaccine uptake at the University of Eldoret in Kenya. An online survey was administered to 200 respondents and the data was analyzed using SPSS and Excel. The study found that while most respondents had some knowledge of vaccines, vaccination rates remained low. There were also significant safety concerns and the influence of conspiracy theories. The researchers recommend increasing education efforts through various platforms, with a focus on addressing gender differences, regularly sharing evidence-based research on hesitancy, and integrating immunization programs on campus and in the community.

We Analyzed 1 Million Articles about Covid Vaccines. Here’s What We Found!
Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered coronavirus.
Ever since The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the Coronavirus outbreak as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on 30 January 2020, and a pandemic on 11 March 2020, scientists from all over the world have been scrambling to create a vaccine.
During this period, vaccine development was expedited and scientists faced various challenges in creating a working vaccine.
The urgency to create a vaccine led to “compressed schedules” where trials for vaccines, which usually take years, were conducted over a period of months.
Since then, Several vaccines have been approved for mass vaccination drives against COVID-19 and have been distributed globally.
However, the community’s knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions towards these vaccinations are poorly understood.
We analyzed 1M articles that contained the mentions of various vaccines and here’s what we found.
✔✔ Conversations about Pfizer have received more engagement on Twitter as Pfizer has shown the highest efficacy rate of 95%.
✔✔ Moderna has an efficacy of 94.1% against covid infection and the engagement shows that articles that mention Moderna had lesser engagement than Pfizer but considerably more than other vaccines.
✔✔ AstraZeneca ranks third when it comes to Twitter engagement among popular vaccines.
✔✔ Russia’s Sputnik vaccine claims a 95% efficacy rate, even before beginning a Phase III trial. But conversations and engagement on Twitter have been minimal.
✔✔ Covaxin and Novavax have had some conversations and mentions on Twitter, unlike Janssen, a vaccine that has had the least engagement.

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered coronavirus.
Ever since The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the Coronavirus outbreak as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on 30 January 2020, and a pandemic on 11 March 2020, scientists from all over the world have been scrambling to create a vaccine.
During this period, vaccine development was expedited and scientists faced various challenges in creating a working vaccine.
The urgency to create a vaccine led to “compressed schedules” where trials for vaccines, which usually take years, were conducted over a period of months.
Since then, Several vaccines have been approved for mass vaccination drives against COVID-19 and have been distributed globally.
However, the community’s knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions towards these vaccinations are poorly understood.
We analyzed 1M articles that contained the mentions of various vaccines and here’s what we found.
✔✔ Conversations about Pfizer have received more engagement on Twitter as Pfizer has shown the highest efficacy rate of 95%.
✔✔ Moderna has an efficacy of 94.1% against covid infection and the engagement shows that articles that mention Moderna had lesser engagement than Pfizer but considerably more than other vaccines.
✔✔ AstraZeneca ranks third when it comes to Twitter engagement among popular vaccines.
✔✔ Russia’s Sputnik vaccine claims a 95% efficacy rate, even before beginning a Phase III trial. But conversations and engagement on Twitter have been minimal.
✔✔ Covaxin and Novavax have had some conversations and mentions on Twitter, unlike Janssen, a vaccine that has had the least engagement.

A Decade of Healthy Ageing? What good looks like and how we get there

This report analyzes vitamin D status in older Irish adults using data from The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (TILDA). It finds:
1) During winter, 21.3% of adults over 55 were vitamin D deficient, with rates increasing with age (46.6% of those over 85 deficient).
2) Deficiency rates were high across all regions of Ireland, with those over 85 in Connacht & Ulster having the highest rate (59.5% deficient).
3) Only 9.4% of those over 55 and 11.5% of those over 70 reported taking a vitamin D supplement in winter. Supplement use was much higher in women than men.

Optimising Adult Vaccination in Europe
Vaccination rates among adults in Europe are lower than recommended levels despite evidence that vaccines prevent deadly diseases in older populations. To improve rates by 2020, efforts should focus on increasing vaccination among healthcare workers, empowering consumers with independent information on immunization, and promoting immunization as part of a cultural norm of healthy aging. Behavioral economics approaches could also help convince more adults to receive recommended vaccines.

2) It benefits wide segments of the population by preventing micronutrient deficiencies. Fortification programs have been shown to reduce anemia, birth defects, and cognitive impairments.
3) Successful fortification programs are implemented through legislation, involve all stakeholders, and have strong monitoring systems to ensure micronutrient needs are met and quality is maintained.

To celebrate Jack’s life and contribution to public health advancements around the world, the ILC-UK organised this special debate on one of the greatest challenges of the 21st century: the threat posed to medicine by the rise of antimicrobial resistance. Fittingly held in the oldest operating theatre in Europe, the debate focused on what must be done to prevent (in the words of Lord O’Neill, Chair of the Review on Antimicrobial Resistance) medicine being plunged ‘back into the dark ages’.
Senior policymakers and patient group representatives discussed the UK, and global challenge posed by antimicrobial resistance; the specific risk posed to healthy longevity; the role of vaccination in reducing antibiotic usage; and what Government and civil society can do to meet these challenges.

There are a couple of reasons why it is not an easy thing to successfully implement preventive measures. First of all, behavioral change is hard to accomplish. COVID-19 has demonstrated the threat posed by infectious diseases: over 5 million people have died and $4 trillion could be lost worldwide due to the pandemic’s impact on tourism. Yet immunisation has played an important role in curbing the pandemic: vaccines have saved 470,000 Europeans aged 60+ and many economies are now recovering.
It’s not just COVID-19 vaccines that protect people’s health and the economy. Previous ILC research has shown that flu vaccination can prevent 245,000 cases in over-65s and save almost £29 million in sick days annually. As over-65s account for 23% of tourism nights spent by EU residents, the European travel sector could benefit the most from routine vaccination and healthier ageing populations.
In this webinar, ILC and CLCI showcased their key research findings on the social and economic benefits of vaccination. We were joined by industry experts who shared their views on how vaccines can help Europe’s tourism industry beyond COVID-19.

The British Islamic Medical Association recommends the COVID-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca for eligible individuals in the Muslim community for protection against COVID-19 when used in accordance with regulatory approval. They note efficacy was shown to be 70.42% with mostly mild adverse reactions reported. While vaccines are now available, vigilance with preventive measures like masks and distancing remain important given continued high transmission rates disproportionately impacting ethnic minorities.

We know that we’re living longer, which means many people will also be working for longer. One in seven people over 65 are still employed in the UK, but we’re still seeing challenges in our labour markets.
According to the ILC’s Healthy Ageing and Prevention Index, the UK’s work span is only 31.5 years, ranking the UK 47th out of 121 countries. Skills shortages driven by demographic change are hitting all sectors of the UK’s economy: by 2030, we could see a shortage of 2.6 million workers. On the other hand, if UK employment rates for those aged 50 to 64 matched the rates of those aged 35 to 49, the country’s GDP would increase by more than 5%.
One way to improve work span and employment is through lifelong learning. However, in the UK, as the Learning and Work Institute’s Adult Participation in Learning survey showed, rates of learning continue to fall with age. In 2023, only 36% of people aged 55 to 64, 24% of those aged 65 to 74, and 17% of those aged 75 and over said that they’d taken part in any kind of learning in the past three years.
To better understand the approaches in other countries, we consulted with experts in lifelong learning, both from the UK and globally. ILC's report, in collaboration with Phoenix Insights, Redefining lifelong learning: lessons from across the globe considers the approaches taken in Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden. While each country’s approach is different, and shaped by its wider cultural, political and economic context, there are some common threads including: learning culture; the range of learning opportunities on offer; levels of support and investment; and accessibility

Plugging the gap: Estimating the demand and supply of jobs by sector in 2030
The UK economy could see a shortfall of 2.6 million workers by 2030 – almost twice the workforce of the NHS – as a result of population ageing, the COVID pandemic and Brexit.
These shortfalls will affect the whole economy, with manufacturing, retail, construction, transport, health and social care among the sectors projected to be hardest hit.
To plug these gaps, Government must introduce a comprehensive Workforce Strategy looking at:
How to support people to stay in the workforce for longer, e.g. by supporting healthy workplaces, supporting carers and creating flexible conditions that suit people’s needs.
How to ameliorate childcare costs and reintegrate people into the workforce following timeout for caring or a health need

Priorities for the G20 in India webinar

Research by the International Longevity Centre UK (ILC) funded by Bayes Business School — based on Commonwealth Games competitor records since the inaugural event in 1930 — shows large differences in the longevity of medal winners compared to people in the general population that were born in the same year. A report finds that top-level sports people can live over 5 years longer than the rest of the population.

Overall life span (LS) was 1671.7±1721.6 days and cumulative 5YS reached 62.4%, 10 years – 50.4%, 20 years – 44.6%. 94 LCP lived more than 5 years without cancer (LS=2958.6±1723.6 days), 22 – more than 10 years (LS=5571±1841.8 days). 67 LCP died because of LC (LS=471.9±344 days). AT significantly improved 5YS (68% vs. 53.7%) (P=0.028 by log-rank test). Cox modeling displayed that 5YS of LCP significantly depended on: N0-N12, T3-4, blood cell circuit, cell ratio factors (ratio between cancer cells-CC and blood cells subpopulations), LC cell dynamics, recalcification time, heparin tolerance, prothrombin index, protein, AT, procedure type (P=0.000-0.031). Neural networks, genetic algorithm selection and bootstrap simulation revealed relationships between 5YS and N0-12 (rank=1), thrombocytes/CC (rank=2), segmented neutrophils/CC (3), eosinophils/CC (4), erythrocytes/CC (5), healthy cells/CC (6), lymphocytes/CC (7), stick neutrophils/CC (8), leucocytes/CC (9), monocytes/CC (10). Correct prediction of 5YS was 100% by neural networks computing (error=0.000; area under ROC curve=1.0).
