This document discusses using the open-source Maxima software to perform structural analysis computations symbolically and numerically. It presents Maxima's capabilities for symbolic differentiation, integration, matrix operations, and solving differential equations, which are useful for structural analysis. Six representative structural analysis problems are solved using Maxima to demonstrate its ease of use. The conclusion is that Maxima can efficiently handle symbolic and numeric solutions to structural analysis problems, providing a free alternative to commercial software packages for teaching purposes.
