INTRODUCTION
• वसुधैव क
ु टुम्बकम्, अतिति देवो भव: are taglines of India
Tourism.
• Most Indian Languages are derived from Sanskrit, it is
written in Devnagri Script.
• Mattur in Karnataka’s Shimoga district, which is known
for its Sanskrit-speaking inhabitants, is a quaint
metaphor of ancient India in modern times.
POTENTIAL TOURIST
DESTINATION
Matturu (ಮತ್ತ
ೂ ರು in Kannada, also spelt
Mathur/Mathooru etc) is a scenic village on the
outskirts of Shivamogga (Shimoga) town in Karnataka.
Mattur is known for having Sanskrit language as their
primary language. Villagers use Sanskrit here for their
day to day conversation and not just during pujas. The
town also is a hub for those aspiring to learn Vedas.
Mattur is also a very scenic place from pure tourist
perspective. One is traveling to or Via Shimoga and
have couple of hours to spare, a quick visit to Mattur
can be memorable.
One of the potential tourist interests in
Mattur is a small Shiva temple built inside a
nice garden (inaugurated in 2005 by the then
state governor) with flowing freshwater
stream nearby. Couple of other temples
(Someshwara temple and Lakshmikeshava
temple) on the banks of Tunga River are also
good. Drive through tall Arica nut trees will
be a bonus.
POTENTIAL TOURIST
DESTINATION
CHALLENGES FACED BY MATTUR
AS A TOURISM DESTINATION
• Infrastructure : While Mattur has made
significant improvements to its infrastructure in
recent years, there is still a need for additional
investment in roads, public transportation, and
other key infrastructure projects to support the
growing tourism industry.
• Seasonal fluctuations: Tourism in Mattur is
subject to seasonal fluctuations, with peak
tourist seasons resulting in overcrowding and
strain on local resources. This can also lead to
a slowdown in economic activity during off-
peak seasons.
• Accommodation: As the number of tourists visiting Mattur
continues to increase, there is a need for more accommodation
options in the village, including hotels, guesthouses, and
homestays.
• Limited facilities: The limited availability of facilities such as
ATMs, medical clinics, and restaurants can be a challenge for
tourists visiting Mattur. Additional facilities are needed to
support the growing number of visitors to the village.
• Cultural sensitivity: With the increasing number of tourists
visiting Mattur, there is a need to ensure that cultural sensitivity
is maintained. Tourists should be educated on the local
customs and traditions of the village, and measures should be
taken to protect the cultural heritage of Mattur.

TOURISM PLANNING APPROACH
• Participatory Approach
• Community based Approach
POSITIVE IMPACTS OF MATTUR
AS A TOURISM DESTINATION
• The impact of Mattur can be seen from different perspectives, including cultural,
educational, and linguistic. Here are some potential impacts of Mattur:
• Preservation of linguistic heritage: It is one of the few places in the world where
Sanskrit is still spoken as a primary language. By continuing to use and teach Sanskrit,
the village is helping to preserve a language and culture that has been passed down
for generations.
• Promotion of education: Mattur's unique language tradition has also helped to promote
education in the village. Many people from all over India and the world visit the village
to learn Sanskrit, and this has helped to create job opportunities for local residents
who are skilled in the language. This has also led to the creation of schools and
educational programs that focus on the study of Sanskrit.
• Cultural exchange: The village has become a hub for cultural exchange, with people
from all over the world coming to Mattur to learn about Sanskrit language and culture.
This has helped to create an environment of openness and acceptance, where people
from different backgrounds can come together and learn from each other.
NEGATIVE IMPACTS OF MATTUR
AS A TOURISM DESTINATION
• Environmental impact: Increased tourism can lead to environmental degradation,
including pollution, deforestation, and damage to natural habitats. Mattur's
ecosystem could be negatively impacted by the construction of new tourist
facilities, increased traffic, and other related activities.
• Cultural commodification: The commercialization of Mattur's language tradition
and cultural heritage may lead to cultural commodification, which can be seen as
disrespectful to the culture and its people. It is important to preserve the cultural
heritage of Mattur in a respectful and sustainable manner.
• Economic disparity: Tourism can lead to economic disparity, with some locals
benefiting more than others. The influx of tourists may drive up prices and make it
harder for local residents to afford basic necessities.
• Disruption of local lifestyle: The influx of tourists can disrupt the local lifestyle of
Mattur's residents. Increased traffic and crowds may make it more difficult for
locals to go about their daily routines and enjoy their natural surroundings.
• Loss of authenticity: Over-commercialization can lead to a loss of authenticity,
which is an essential part of Mattur's charm. If the village becomes too touristy, it
may lose its unique character and appeal.
SUGGESTIONS
• Showing documentary of Mattur at Bangalore, Mangalore if possible other metro cities
• Some of the residents living in Mattur may arrange for tourist home stay
• Create a website for Mattur and promote cultural heritage. It can attract tourist for
homestay, purchasing handicraft and cultural events
• Sanskrit circuit could be prepared by connecting Mattur, hosa hali, ganoda, Sasana
• Mattur railway station can be developed between Shivamogga to Chikmangalur on the
route 0f the Bangalore route
• Mattur bus stop can be developed between Shivamogga to Mangalore.
• Regular Bus connectivity from Shivamogga & Mangalore
• Digitise Manuscripts and preserve them for next generations
• Light and sound show festival should be shown to the tourists who are willing to visit
Mattur
• Karnataka government should built a restaurant in Mattur for providing authentic
cuisine to the tourists who are visiting Mattur.
CONCLUSION
Sanskrit is the unique cultural identity of Mattur, and
efforts should be made to preserve and promote this
ancient language and the associated culture.
Encourage locals to continue using Sanskrit in their
daily lives, and provide opportunities for visitors to
learn about Sanskrit through cultural programs,
workshops, and interactive experiences.

Mattur is known for having Sanskrit language as their primary language. Villagers use Sanskrit here for their day to day conversation and not just during pujas. The town also is a hub for those aspiring to learn Vedas. Mattur is also a very scenic place from pure tourist perspective. One is traveling to or Via Shimoga and have couple of hours to spare, a quick visit to Mattur can be memorable.
  • 4. One of the potential tourist interests in Mattur is a small Shiva temple built inside a nice garden (inaugurated in 2005 by the then state governor) with flowing freshwater stream nearby. This can also lead to a slowdown in economic activity during off- peak seasons.
  • 6. • Accommodation: As the number of tourists visiting Mattur continues to increase, there is a need for more accommodation options in the village, including hotels, guesthouses, and homestays. • Limited facilities: The limited availability of facilities such as ATMs, medical clinics, and restaurants can be a challenge for tourists visiting Mattur. Additional facilities are needed to support the growing number of visitors to the village. • Cultural sensitivity: With the increasing number of tourists visiting Mattur, there is a need to ensure that cultural sensitivity is maintained. Here are some potential impacts of Mattur: • Preservation of linguistic heritage: It is one of the few places in the world where Sanskrit is still spoken as a primary language. By continuing to use and teach Sanskrit, the village is helping to preserve a language and culture that has been passed down for generations. • Promotion of education: Mattur's unique language tradition has also helped to promote education in the village.
