This document summarizes two studies on the effects of shade and landscape composition on coffee pests in East Africa. The first study found that shady plantations at lower altitudes had higher infestations of white stemborer but lower infestations of coffee berry borer. The second study found that the effect of local shade on lacebug populations depended on the amount of tree cover in the surrounding landscape. Overall, the document suggests that while shade-trees may help control some coffee pests, their effects depend on the specific pest, altitude, and landscape context.
