Review on estimating elapsed
time in minutes.
Jenny started doing her
assignment in English at
8:03 in the evening and
finished at 8:50 p.m.
About how many minutes
did Jenny do he r
homework?
• What do you usually do as a
pupil before going to sleep at
night?
• How do you manage doing all
the assignments, projects, and
other home activities?
Alma started working on her project at 9:10
p.m. Upon finishing her project, she looked
at her digital watch and the time was
already 9:56 p.m. How long did she work
on her project?
• What did Alma do?
• At what time did she start making her project?
• At what time did she finish?
• How do we solve the problem?
• Is there a need to follow a procedure?
• What are the usual steps we use to solve a
problem?
Group the pupils into five or six
groups.
Let the group work together to find the
answers to the given problems with
the following guide questions:
1. What is asked in the problem?
2. What are the given?
3. What operation will you use?
4. What is the mathematical
sentence?
5. How is the solution done?
6. What is the answer to the problem?
Let the different groups display their
outputs and ask them to discuss their
answers.
Answers:
1. The length of time Alma spent to finish
her project.
2. 9:10 p.m., 9;56 p.m.
3. Subtraction
4. 56 – 10 = N
5. 56 – 10 = 46 mins.
6. Alma finished her project in 46 minutes.
• How did you find the activity?
• How were you able to find the
answer?
• What were the steps followed
to come up with the answer?
Amado finished encoding his
report in English at 8:15 p.m. If he
started at 7:20 p.m., how many
minutes did he spend encoding?
• How will you solve the problem?
• Use these steps to solve for the
problem.
Steps Answer
Understand:
1. What is asked in the
problem?
The time Amado
spent encoding
2. What are given?
8:15 p.m. (time
ended);
7:20 p.m. (time
started)
Plan:
3. What operation will
you use?
Subtraction
Steps Answer
Solve:
5. How is the solution
done?
8:15 7:75
- 7:20 7:20
Check and Look back:
6. What will you do to
check if your answer is
correct?
Add the difference to
the subtrahend
7:20
+ 0:55
7:75
7:75 = 8:15
7. What is the answer
to the problem?
Amado spent 55
minutes encoding.
A. Read each problem. Then, write the letter
of the correct answer.

How do we solve word problems
involving elapsed time?
To solve word problems involving
elapsed time, we follow the steps in
solving word problems. Use the different
ways to find the elapsed time such as
subtracting the time started from time
ended, using a number line, and counting
the minutes or seconds from the time
started to the time ended.
Read and solve the following
problems.
1. During the gardening time, Mr. Buemia gave
his pupils their assigned work in their school
garden. The pupils started to prepare their
garden plots at 2:55 p.m. At 3:30 p.m., Mr.
Buemia asked them to go back to their
classroom. How long did they stay in their
school garden?
2. Isagani and his teammates started their
practice in the gymnasium at 7:20 a.m. They
ended at 9:10 a.m. with just enough time to
prepare for their classes. How many minutes
did they spend practicing?
3. Amado took 25 minutes to eat his lunch. He
finished at 12:40 p.m. What time did he start
eating?
4. Lorena and Eudis walked around the plaza
for 35 minutes. If they started at 5:30 p.m.,
what time did they stop walking?
5. The Grade 4 pupils spent 33 minutes doing
their Science activity. If they finished the
activity at 9:54 a.m., what time did they start
the activity?
Solve the problems.
1. Dioleta began creating a model of the
layers of the earth using buko at 5:30 in
the afternoon. She was able to make her
model at 6:05 p.m. How long did it take
her to finish creating the model?
2. Rod and Ian were assigned to clean the
industrial area room today. They began
cleaning at 6:45 a.m. They agreed to
work fast. At 7:05 a.m. they were able to
finish cleaning. For how many minutes
did they clean the room?
3. Before the opening of the program, the
school choir had their rehearsals in school at
2;05 p.m. if the program started at 2;30 p.m.,
how many minutes did they rehearse?
4. The Medes family members have their daily
exercise every morning. Today, they started
walking around the municipal plaza at 4:30
a.m. They stopped at 5:10 a.m. How long did
they spend in today’s exercise?
5. The pupils of Mr. Arce arrived at school
gymnasium for dance practice at 9:18 a.m. If
the practice started at exactly 9:30 a.m., how
many minutes were they ahead of the
schedule?
Find the answers to the questions
about the problem.
1. Mang Abe started to cut the grass in their
lawn at 3:40 in the afternoon. He stopped at

d. what Mang Abe was doing
What operation will be needed to solve the
problem?
a. addition b. subtraction
c. division d. multiplication
What is the number sentence?
a. 3:40 + 4:12 = N b. 3:40 – 4:12 = N
c. 4:12 – 3:40 = N d. 4:12 × 3;40 = N
What is the answer to the problem?
a. Mang Abe worked for 32 minutes.
b. Mang Abe worked for 32 seconds.
c. Mang Abe worked for 32 hours.
d. Mang Abe worked for 32 mins. and 32
seconds.
Solve the following problems:
1. Liana and Jayne had a race in going to school.
From the same starting point, Liana spent 22
minutes and 35 seconds to reach the gate of the
school, while Jayne reached the school in 19
minutes and 45 seconds. If they started the race at
