This document provides examples of solving multi-step subtraction problems by completing the subtraction steps first before adding any remaining numbers. It shows the subtraction of 849 - 75, with the intermediate steps of 9 - 5 = 4 and then 7 - 7 = 0 by borrowing from the 8. This results in the full subtraction of 849 - 75 = 790. It then shows the addition of the remaining 16 for the full problem of 849 - 75 + 16 = 790. Two additional examples demonstrate this process for the subtraction and addition problems of 625 - 53 + 143 and 471 - 243 + 59.
