This document summarizes a study on the risk factors associated with Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) infections in sheep and goat herds in Marsabit County, Kenya. The study found that the greatest predictor of PPR status was whether or not the animal's owner had the herd vaccinated through government vaccination campaigns. Approximately 40% of sampled animals tested positive for PPR antibodies. Access to vaccination was limited by inadequate veterinary resources and personnel. The study recommends increasing vaccination access, targeting young animals, improving surveillance capabilities, and using GIS to optimize vaccination campaign planning and resource allocation.

This document summarizes a study that used protein microarrays to analyze antibody responses to Plasmodium falciparum (Pf) in residents of two sites in western Kenya with different malaria transmission levels. The study identified 107 Pf proteins that were targets of human antibody responses. Antibody acquisition for these antigens was compared between age groups and sites. Highly immunogenic antigens that elicited stable antibody responses from an early age as well as less immunogenic antigens requiring repeated exposure were identified. A combination of these antigens could potentially be used as serological markers to detect differences in malaria transmission levels between sites.
This document summarizes a study assessing the therapeutic efficacy of chloroquine (CQ) for treating Plasmodium vivax malaria among outpatients in southern Ethiopia. Sixty-three patients with confirmed P. vivax infection were treated with CQ over 3 days and monitored for 28 days. Two patients experienced recurrent parasitemia within 28 days, indicating a 96.7% efficacy of CQ. While CQ showed high efficacy in this study, some previous studies in Ethiopia found increasing chloroquine resistance in P. vivax, highlighting the need for ongoing monitoring of resistance.
This research article evaluated the performance of the circulating cathodic antigen immuno-chromatographic test (CCA-ICT) to diagnose Schistosoma mansoni infection in Brazil compared to the standard Kato-Katz stool test. The study analyzed urine and stool samples from 130 individuals in endemic and non-endemic areas and found that the CCA-ICT's sensitivity and specificity depended on whether a trace test result was considered positive or negative. While the CCA-ICT correlated with egg counts, it misdiagnosed approximately 15% of Kato-Katz positive individuals who had light infections. The researchers concluded that the CCA-ICT showed reasonable diagnostic performance but lacked sufficient sensitivity to be used as a standalone

The document summarizes preliminary research toward developing a method for stably transfecting the malaria parasite Plasmodium vivax. The researchers tested various transfection conditions and found the highest parasite survival rates using the Amaxa Nucleofector program U-033 and pre-loading erythrocytes with DNA. However, no fluorescent parasites were observed, likely due to the low efficiency of Plasmodium transfection. Future work aims to increase parasite numbers for transfection and further optimize methods.
This study was conducted in the malaria endemic settlements of Lake-Alau, Borno State, Nigeria, between August to December, 2012. The relationship between the mean parasite densities on days 0, 3, 7, 14 and 28 during follow-up and the trends of recoveries from thrombocytopenia in children (≤59 months) was conducted on Plasmodium falciparum malaria using the Standard therapeutic guidelines protocols. A sample size of 313 children was enrolled for the study, all suffered from uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria and treated with either Artesunate + Sulphadoxine - Pyrimethamine (AT+SP) and Amodiaquine + Sulphadoxine - Pyrimethamine (AQ+SP). The results shows if the study showed that there was a higher initial platelet count of 77975 x109∕µl in AQ+SP group compared to AT+SP (55281 x 109 ∕ µl) patients, and also the influence of parasitaemia on platelet distribution was relatively higher (98.30%) in AT+SP compared to AQ+SP (95.98%) combinations. Both drugs significantly acted in a similar pattern but the trend of mean daily reduction in parasite density per µl of blood which caused a mean recovery in platelets by 48,606 x109∕µl in AQ+SP as against 37,956 x109∕µl for AT+SP over 28 days of follow-up.

Comparative study of the effectiveness of combination therapies based on atem...Open Access Research Paper
The National Malaria Control Program recommended in 1993, the use of Chloroquina (CQ) as first line drug for malaria treatment, and sulfadoxin pyrimethamin as second drug. After years, Benin knows resistance about these antimalarials. Quinina was to treat gravities. In 2004, the strategy of treatment changed. Treatment of malaria cases is based on use of arteminisinia therapeutic combination. The goal of this study is to be sure that these drugs are efficace before general use in the country and in some regions as Dassa Zounmè where the resistance is up (61. 3% for Chloroquina CQ and 45.9% for SP in 2002).The study is based on: comparison of therapeutic efficacy of artemether Lumefantrine and Artesunate Amodiaquine. Results show that all of the tested drugs have good therapeutic efficacy. Most important rate failure is in Dassa Zounmè (33, 86%) than Parakou (23, 44%). They are parasitologic failure and are probably due to the reinfestation of children. Two drugs have a good parasitological clearance and eliminate fever after 2 days of treatment.
The document summarizes a study on asymptomatic bacteriuria (ABU) among antenatal women in India. The study found:
1) The prevalence of ABU was 11.5%, with Escherichia coli being the most common organism isolated.
2) Lower socioeconomic status and education level were significant risk factors for ABU.
3) Nitrofurantoin showed the highest effectiveness against bacterial isolates, with a resistance rate of only 3%.

This article summarizes a study of 785 Tanzanian children living in an area with intense malaria transmission. The study found that iron deficiency (ID), as measured by ferritin levels in blood samples taken at routine visits, significantly decreased the odds of subsequent malaria parasitemia, severe malaria, and all-cause mortality in children. When samples from sick visits were also included, ID was associated with significantly lower prevalence of parasitemia, hyperparasitemia (very high parasite levels), and severe malaria at the time of sample collection. The results suggest that naturally occurring ID protects against severe malaria and death in young children, and that iron supplementation may increase malaria risk even in children with ID. Future studies are needed to determine
This study examined the relationship between iron deficiency and malaria risk in 785 Tanzanian children from birth to 3 years of age. The key findings were:
1. Iron deficiency was found to be protective against malaria, with children who had iron deficiency having lower odds of parasitemia, hyperparasitemia, severe malaria, and all-cause mortality compared to children who were iron-replete.
2. Iron deficiency was associated with a 6.6-fold lower odds of concurrent parasitemia and a 24.0-fold lower odds of concurrent hyperparasitemia. It also reduced the odds of severe malaria by 4.0-fold.
3. Prospective analyses found that iron deficiency
