What is Mass Media?
refers to every medium or source which is
used to connect and communicate with a
large number of people at
once.
What is Mass Media?
Is a communication—whether written,
broadcast, or spoken—that reaches a
large audience. This includes
television, radio, advertising, movies,
the Internet, newspapers, magazines,
and so forth.
What is Mass Media?
“The mass media are becoming
more and more pervasive and
significant in terms of our social
perceptions and interactions with
our surroundings” (Lev, Emi 2006, p. 1).
Mass Media
Today, mass media is generally
categorized into 7 branches.
Seven Mass Media
1. Print (books, pamphlets, newspapers, magazines, etc) from
the late 1400s
2. Recordings (records, tapes, cassettes, cartridges, CD's, DVD's)
from the late 1800s
3. Cinema from about 1900
4. Radio from about 1910
5. Television from about 1950
6. Internet from about 1990
7. Mobile phones from about 2000
Characteristics of Mass Media
Communication is mostly one way
Audience has great deal of choice
Reach large & vast audience
Aim messages to attract largest audience
possible
Influence society & are in turn influenced by
society
Advantages of Mass Media
Reaches many people quickly
Low cost per person reached
Can be used to
Tell people about new ideas & services
Agenda setting & advocacy
Created favourable climate of opinion
Disadvantages of Mass Media
Difficult to make specific to local
community
Fixed message
Access often difficult
Lacks feedback
Can be easily misunderstood

Influence and Effects
The influence of mass media has an effect
on many aspects of human life, which can
include voting a certain way, individual
views and beliefs, or skewing a person's
knowledge of a specific topic due to being
provided false information.
Effects on Body Image
Body Image can also be seen as directly
related to self-esteem and self-concept.
Advertising, particularly for fashion and
cosmetics, has a powerful effect on how
we see ourselves and how we view our own
personal body image.
Effects on Body Image
It has been reported that children as three
years old has experience pressures of media on
their body.
Adolescence are more apt to be at risk for
developing unhealthy attitudes towards their
bodies.
Effects on Body Image
Young life are focused on developing their
individual identities.
Women’s magazines in particular have
tremendous influence on body image.

We watch television or an action movie we usually
see many images of violence and people hurting
others. The problem with this is that it can become
traumatic especially in our children as they see it
more and more.
Our kids that are starting to grow and are shaping
their personality values and beliefs can become
aggressive or they can lose a sense of distinction
between reality and fiction.
