Topic: Discovering the mass communication problem &
promises
In Mass Communications Research
Introduction to Mass communication
Mass communication is the study of how people and entities relay
information through mass media to large segments of the
population at the same time. It is usually understood to
relate newspaper, magazine, and book publishing, as well
as radio, television and film, even via internet as these mediums are
used for disseminating information, news and advertising. Mass
communication differs from the studies of other forms of
communication, such as interpersonal
communication organizational communication or, in that it focuses
on a single source transmitting information to a large number of
receivers. The study of mass communication is chiefly concerned
with how the content of mass communication persuades or
otherwise affects the behavior, attitude, opinion, or emotion of the
person or people receiving the information.
Problems facing in Mass Communication
There are following problems which Mass communication is facing
in its field
Television Violence and Children’s Behavior
No doubt Mass communication has put its great impact on the society
by providing the useful information to the audience but its violent
material and bold content in the films and dramas is corrupting and
spoiling the young minds. By viewing the action, fighting and
aggressive scenes, Children behavior is changing and they are
adapting the violence of these contents in their actions.so this
problem is creating the big hurdle in the mass communication field.
The Female Image in Mass Media
Portraying a female in Television, Newspapers and Magazine is
common in Mass Media now a days which is creating a gender
dominance.Their bold imagesand videosspreading the adult content
and corrupting the young minds children and society.
Ethinism
One of the Major problem of the media is Ethinism which occurs
mostly in African and Asian countries this is when the Journalists
and editors favor their place of origin or Hometown in their
publications.
Errors in News stories
According to an in-depth study by the American Society of
Newspaper Editors in 1999, 23 percent of the public find factual
errors in the news stories of their daily paper at least once a week
while more than a third of the public - 35 percent - see spelling
or grammar mistakes in their newspaper more than once a week.
The study also found that 73 percent of adults in America have
become more skeptical about the accuracy of their news.
Level of inaccuracy
. The level of inaccuracy noticed is even higher when the public
has first-hand knowledge of a news story. Almost 50 percent of
the public reports having had first-hand knowledge of a news
event at some time even though they were not personally part of
the story. Of that group, only 51 percent said the facts in the
story were reported accurately, with the remainder finding errors
ranging from misinterpretations to actual errors.
Sensational stories
In a study by the American Society of Newspaper Editors, eighty
percent of the American public said they believe "journalists
chase sensational stories because they think it will sell papers,
not because they think it is important news. " Another 85 percent
of the public believes that "newspapers frequently over-
dramatize some news stories just to sell more papers." Over 80
percent believe sensational stories receive lots of news coverage
simply because they are exciting, not because they are
important.
Misleading Headlines
48 percent of the public sees misleading headlines in their paper
more than once a week.
News on Private Officals
78 percent of the public thinks journalists enjoy reporting on the
personal failings of private officials.
Theory Problem
The biggest problems with mass communication is the theory
itself. Firstly mass is a large group of people, the masses often
refers to the greater society or common society, usuall y the
middle class. Therefore to communicate to the mass( everyone)
can never realistically be achieved, and the mass is undefinable,
you can’t claim to be presenting media to the mass but not define
what the mass consists of, not everyone has media available to
them. The second issue in the theory of mass communication is
the communication part. Communication can be characterized by
a two way conversation via print, verbal, screen etc. In mass
communication as we know it today very little of it is truly a two
way form of communication. it’s more like mass presentation of
information which in Australia today comes from a narrow group
of people (packers/stokes/Murdoch) to the so called masses,
clearly this information presented will be biased and limited
usually uniform over all facets of media.
Promises in Mass Communication Research
Some writers and editors has done the studies about the
promises in mass communication research.
These studies provide important insights into the backgrounds,
education, values, attitudes, training, politics, ethics,
professionalism, behavior and organizational constraints of
journalists.
Education and Training
There should be the training between the students and
professionals and they should have to provide the ideal
environment for working and demos should be given to them as
how to perform well in the field.
Approaches and Methods
There should be a focus and clear approach to study the media
and their policies and those methods should be adopted which
can evaluate the inaccuracies in mass communication field.
Face to Face Interviews
Face to face interviews should be conducted to improve the
research in mass communication.
Focus group Discussion
Making of groups is a best way to get the best results and for
making the research better and to fulfill the promises a focus
group discussion about the problems and solutions should be
conducted.
In Depth Interviews
SMS surveys/Desk research
Concept and Message testing and development,
Media content analysis
Telephone Surveys
Data Entry
Report Writing and Analysis
Presentations for target audience

mass communication

  • 1. Topic: Discovering the mass communication problem & promises In Mass Communications Research Introduction to Mass communication Mass communication is the study of how people and entities relay information through mass media to large segments of the population at the same time. It is usually understood to relate newspaper, magazine, and book publishing, as well as radio, television and film, even via internet as these mediums are used for disseminating information, news and advertising. Mass communication differs from the studies of other forms of communication, such as interpersonal communication organizational communication or, in that it focuses on a single source transmitting information to a large number of receivers. The study of mass communication is chiefly concerned with how the content of mass communication persuades or otherwise affects the behavior, attitude, opinion, or emotion of the person or people receiving the information. Problems facing in Mass Communication
  • 2. There are following problems which Mass communication is facing in its field Television Violence and Children’s Behavior No doubt Mass communication has put its great impact on the society by providing the useful information to the audience but its violent material and bold content in the films and dramas is corrupting and spoiling the young minds. By viewing the action, fighting and aggressive scenes, Children behavior is changing and they are adapting the violence of these contents in their actions.so this problem is creating the big hurdle in the mass communication field. The Female Image in Mass Media Portraying a female in Television, Newspapers and Magazine is common in Mass Media now a days which is creating a gender dominance.Their bold imagesand videosspreading the adult content and corrupting the young minds children and society. Ethinism One of the Major problem of the media is Ethinism which occurs mostly in African and Asian countries this is when the Journalists and editors favor their place of origin or Hometown in their publications. Errors in News stories
  • 3. According to an in-depth study by the American Society of Newspaper Editors in 1999, 23 percent of the public find factual errors in the news stories of their daily paper at least once a week while more than a third of the public - 35 percent - see spelling or grammar mistakes in their newspaper more than once a week. The study also found that 73 percent of adults in America have become more skeptical about the accuracy of their news. Level of inaccuracy . The level of inaccuracy noticed is even higher when the public has first-hand knowledge of a news story. Almost 50 percent of the public reports having had first-hand knowledge of a news event at some time even though they were not personally part of the story. Of that group, only 51 percent said the facts in the story were reported accurately, with the remainder finding errors ranging from misinterpretations to actual errors. Sensational stories In a study by the American Society of Newspaper Editors, eighty percent of the American public said they believe "journalists chase sensational stories because they think it will sell papers, not because they think it is important news. " Another 85 percent of the public believes that "newspapers frequently over- dramatize some news stories just to sell more papers." Over 80 percent believe sensational stories receive lots of news coverage simply because they are exciting, not because they are important.
  • 4. Misleading Headlines 48 percent of the public sees misleading headlines in their paper more than once a week. News on Private Officals 78 percent of the public thinks journalists enjoy reporting on the personal failings of private officials. Theory Problem The biggest problems with mass communication is the theory itself. Firstly mass is a large group of people, the masses often refers to the greater society or common society, usuall y the middle class. Therefore to communicate to the mass( everyone) can never realistically be achieved, and the mass is undefinable, you can’t claim to be presenting media to the mass but not define what the mass consists of, not everyone has media available to them. The second issue in the theory of mass communication is the communication part. Communication can be characterized by a two way conversation via print, verbal, screen etc. In mass communication as we know it today very little of it is truly a two way form of communication. it’s more like mass presentation of information which in Australia today comes from a narrow group of people (packers/stokes/Murdoch) to the so called masses, clearly this information presented will be biased and limited usually uniform over all facets of media.
