This document provides an analysis of masculinity in Ernest Hemingway's novel "The Old Man and the Sea" through a feminist lens. It examines portrayals of manhood through the protagonist's fishing and hunting, as well as through references to bullfighting. The document also discusses language used to describe interactions with animals in an eroticized way. Overall, the document analyzes how Hemingway's work emphasizes traditional masculine traits of physical strength and dominance over nature.

3. Masculinization in ‘Old Man The
sea’
The old man and the sea is the best example of Strong
Manhood
Test of Struggle and Fortitude
Endless hope and Uncertainty of Life
The story Of Courage and Bloodshed
An End with stubborn winner
4. Language of Gender
Erotic twist in narrative of gender
Language of sexuality: The old
man lifted the harpoon and
“drove it down with all his
strength,” “felt the iron go in”.
The Man’s Chest is referred like
५६ की ( छप्पन की) छाती, A
man’s huge Muscles are able to
take heavy pressure and force of
weight.
“The old man dropped the line
and put his foot on it and lifted
the harpoon as high as he could
and drove it down with all his
strength, and more strength he
had just summoned, into the
fish’s side just behind the great
chest fin that rose high in the air
to the altitude of the man’s chest.
He felt the iron go in and he
leaned on it and drove it further
and then pushed all his weight
after it”
5. Count……
Of course, Santiago wins the
game and hunted the marline,
but with feminizing point of
view, the marlin in the moment
of the man’s victory over it, the
novel temporarily allows the old
man to reclaim his masculine
identity – he even says “I think
the great DiMaggio would be
proud of me today.”
Again, inspiring example is of
man’s victory.
The Dream Sequence
Santiago goes back to his bed and
sleeps for days, “dreaming about
the lions” – popularly thought of
as the “king of the jungle,” a
symbol of masculine domination
over nature.
See, Here I’m not directly blaming
Hemingway but this is what is a
fit examples of constructed
socialism.
6. Bull-Fight Portrayals
Of Manhood
Bullfighting is an “art form,”
In which a man dressed
himself well and fight against
Bull who have tremendous
physical strength.
Once again, Man centric
game of Hunting (Animals).
Slowly and steadily he hunts
the bull with sword and at
last kills the bull,
7. Count….
His entire performance is
hideously cruel, and the
“virtues” it celebrates are
perverted. How can it be
“brave” or “courageous” to
torture an innocent animal to
death.
(Update: The ban was
overturned by Spain’s
Constitutional Court in October
2016.)
8. Mythical reference of
Hunting : Portrayal of
Man’s Courage
Tigers occupy an important
place in the Indian culture.
Since ages, it has been a symbol
of magnificence, power, beauty
and fierceness and kings often
hunt them as fulfill their hobby
or to prove courage, because it
has been associated with
bravery and valor.
The combination of grace,
strength, agility and enormous
power has earned the tiger its
pride of place as the national
animal of India.
9. Now, At The End Of Discussion,
What is my purpose to share
above mentioned example is
that , old man’s portrayal of
Masculinity is not at all the
new case of study.
Examples gives us better
understanding, and more
knowledge. It also makes my
presentation more valuable.
See, with this presentation one
thing is most clear is that Hunting
is not only limited with feeding
food, also associated with Hobby
and Manhood.
The old man and the sea is not
the story of only shark hunting
but a deep thought of
Masculinity and manhood,
because we find there is no
female character through the
novel , apart from Marlin he fish,
10. Count……
And the Marlin is considered an enemy of old man and the rival of
the man, feminist perspective says that it is defeat of women hood
against manhood, killing or hunting of a Marlin is indirectly
neglecting the feminist perspective in novel.
Masculinity For Hemingway
The all protagonist characters of Hemingway’s work are very much
masculine not only apparently but mentally too.
The man who perform Mainly actions like Fishing, Hunting or
Fighting, for Hemingway Manhood is all about tremendous physical
strength.
11. Conclusion…
After reading and understanding this all perspective towards
feminism and masculinities we able to recognize the pure genre of
work of are, also the hidden strong gender perspective of any work
of art, so
“ The act of being or Becoming a MAN is decentered, or
subtly problematized or on downright demolished”-
Strychacz Affirms
Neutrality in language and proportion work of are should be the
neutral one.
Of course , Santiago is very brave and courageous man to be note, his
notable courageous act will remain perpetual in the histories of
relating Manhood work of art.
