2. Definition
A press release is an official statement delivered to
members of the news media for the purpose of
providing information, creating an official
statement, or making an announcement directed
for public release. Press releases are also
considered a primary source, meaning they are
original informants for information
3. Golden Rules of Press Releases
Make it short. No more than one typed page or maybe 500 words in an email.
A well-written book press release needs to grab the reader’s attention, describe what
your book is about and why people should read it, and provide basic information
about the book for selling and distribution (e.g. title, author, publication date, where
to buy).
Press releases are issued in response to a particular event. Activities or publications
by the Leopoldina that are either specially or currently relevant and interesting to the
media target group are the main occasions. Other current events originating outside
the Leopoldina will also prompt press-related activities, for instance the dispatch of
an expert list.
4. Purpose of Press release
Press releases are written in short
sentences and in a manner that is
universally understandable. Technical terms
are used sparingly and are always clarified.
Each topic addressed in press releases is
placed in its proper societal and scientific
context to the greatest possible degree.
The primary function
of a press release is to
quickly publicize
information that may
have a significant
impact or be of
particular interest to a
large and unrelated
group of people.
