The Mary Rhodes Pipeline was designed to deliver fresh water from Colorado River to the City of Corpus Christi to augment the region’s local water supply. While existing segment of the pipeline is already helping the region meet 40% of its water demand, the construction of the final segment will be completed in 2015. The water supplied by the pipeline addresses several key environmental and economic issues, from helping maintain adequate salinity level in the Nueces Bay to encouraging large international manufacturing firms to invest into facilities in the region. Realization of these benefits would not have been possible without aligned and synchronized performance of professionals from a wide spectrum of disciplines. Traditionally, the academic experience has been and remains to large extent analytical. Developing and implementing systems that deliver real value, such as the Mary Rhodes Pipeline, requires a synthesis of efforts, made possible by systems thinking. Engineering and science professionals can multiply the impact of their work by becoming aware and deliberately practicing such synthetic, systems thinking. This will result in betterment of the society, of the environment, and greater personal satisfaction from the chosen career.

• Unmanned operation requires high reliability
• How should one pumping system to respond
to failures of the other?
• Operating and maintaining pipeline means
jobs. Who will get them?

27. 3. Requirements Management
HIERARCHY VIEW
• End User Requirements
– “Deliver 40 MGD”
• Sub-System Requirements
– “Control system shall remain
operational upon loss of AC
power for 60 min”
• Component Requirements
– “Motor shall be 350 HP”
TYPE VIEW
• Functional—what system will
do
– “Shut down if communication
is lost for 40 min”
• Non-Functional—what
features the system will have
– “AC power and signal cables
shall have minimum 18 inch
separation”
• Performance—how fast or
how well
– “Valve shall reach fully open
state within 5 minutes of OPEN
command”

28. 4. Testing, Verification, and Validation
• Testing: observation and analysis
– Destructive or non-destructive
– Black vs. White Box
– Can be expensive
• Verification: test results vs. expectations
– Meaningful only if expectations (i.e. requirements) are
known
• Validation: outcome vs. intent
– Obtained with project outcome meets user’s requirements
and intent
