1. Marketing Pros and Cons for Legena
Pros
Multiple positive quotes from review sites
An engaging feature list
Use of bolding in descriptions
Press kit page with all the relevant info
Multiple exciting customization mechanics (helps somewhat with marketing, but I also
really like it from a gameplay design perspective)
Strong retro appeal
Good high-end Kickstarter reward tiers
The mobile version Kickstarter is quite improved. Campaign layout is much more
enticing to view, and I really like the music in the video (gives me that “pumped up for
an epic quest” feeling)
Reward tier chart is an excellent idea, as is having USD equivalents for all monetary
values
Add-On Selection is a good use of upselling, not something I’ve personally seen used on
Kickstarter before
Easy for interested journalists to find press information
Cons
Multiple small grammatical errors
Sometimes bolding is a bit awkwardly placed, makes emphasis seem slightly off
Low end Kickstarter reward tiers may need some sort of revamping, may increase the
desirability of high end tiers as well (though as mentioned these seem pretty solid)
Bit of “crinkle” noise during one of the battle scenes in the original Kickstarter video
May be good to include a brief personal appeal at the end of future Kickstarter videos,
with one of the developers coming on-screen, telling us a bit about the team, its mission,
and the game and its development history, ending with a thank you and encouragement
for support
The game description on the press kit page needs a bit of rewording
There are a few paragraphs on the game’s website that could use a bit of restructuring and
different word choice (mainly in the interest of improving flow/attractiveness to reader)
What sort of exposure measures have been taken? How simple is it to find a link to the company
Facebook page or Twitter account?
A quick search on Reddit shows the newest posts about the game are around a year old. Now that
it’s been officially released, should revisit with an announcement and encourage leaving
feedback on the Steam page.
I noticed one comment about wanting more quality RPGs on mobile platforms. Might be a good
thing to really push the fact this is a full RPG on mobile without the need for an emulator.
2. Some sort of Christmas sale would probably be welcome and the larger gaming community
almost seems to expect that these days. It can also promote the gifting of the game to other
people, for example using one of those 4-copy bundles for you and 3 friends. The game did
release recently, so the discount shouldn’t be too much (e.g. 25% max), except perhaps in the
case of the big bundle.
The game is on Steam, what about other platforms? GOG.com is fairly popular and Legena is a
good aesthetic fit with its retro 16-bit style. The Humble Store is another well-known option.
I’m excited about the prospect of making it onto consoles like Xbox and Playstation and some of
the handhelds, but I hear licensing fees can be pretty steep. I’d advise waiting on a larger
community around Legena and then examining similar titles available on these systems, see how
well they sold, and use this data along with the number of personal requests to have the game
ported to determine if it makes financial sense.
Along with getting a larger community comes collecting customer testimonials. Adds a nice bit
of social proof to go along with the quotes from review sites.
8 of the top 10 search results on Google for “legena” are relevant to the game.
The Kickstarter campaign for the mobile version is a marked improvement over the original, I
would use it as the starting point for designing future campaigns.
