Brands And Digital Culture: It Doesn't Have To SuckAvin Narasimhan
Presentation I gave at the end of February 2011 at The Olin School of Business @ Washington University in St Louis. Part of a new marketing seminar series they've started with the goal of bringing different types of industry folks into their classrooms to give lessons of both success and failure to future brand managers and CMOs. My session specifically was around what role digital platforms can play for brands, and to discuss some broad ideas about how it works and doesn't work.
Creative director LBI Digital
As Chief Creative Officer at DigitasLBi International, Chris Clarke is responsible for the creative output of the network and its creative staff. Chris loves to stay close to the work, developing creative ideas with teams across the network for clients including Coca Cola, Sony Xperia and Etihad. Believability is his creative religion: he is permanently on a mission to bridge the gap between promise and proof for DigitasLBi’s clients, helping them to be true to the principles they espouse.
Like most people who’ve been doing this for a while, Chris stumbled into the digital industry in the late 90s. As a copywriter, he made it his mission to bring the craft of ideas to digital marketing, an ambition realised at pioneering Swedish digital advertising agency Abel & Baker and later at Wheel where he became Executive Creative Director. He was subsequently European Executive Creative Director at Modem Media, President and Executive Creative Director of Digitas UK and Chief Creative Officer of LBi.
Over the years, Chris has become a regular on the speaking circuit and has picked up awards at Cannes, D&AD, LIA, Campaign Digital, Campaign Direct, Revolution, BIMA and the Webbys.
Talk:
For years the internet has been touted as an almost universal force for good. We hear of the “democratising” nature of a platform dedicated to openness and transparency. We have come to see the web as a place where ‘The Consumer is in Control”, and where information wants to be free. In this session, Chris will explore the darker side of the digital revolution, looking at the “winner takes all” business models, and downward pressure on quality caused by ad funded content. By understanding the dark side of the digital revolution, you will be better prepared to help your organisation stay relevant and fit for the digital future.

2011 Social Buzz Awards - Observations From The Judging ProcessBlonde
What forecasts can we make about the near future of social media marketing based on reading and judging the hundreds of entries to the 2011 Social Buzz Awards? And what tips can be offered to the writers of future papers? One judge's personal view. Non-confidential content in advance of results being announced on December 1st 2011.
We set out to answer these questions and ended up writing “Our Playbook for Digital Crisis Management 3.0.” Born out of our global experience preparing for and responding to brand and corporate crises, it’s now part of our global training program.
We wanted to understand how social media was fundamentally changing the way we approach crisis management. We wanted to marry established crisis practices with the most evolved thinking in social media marketing and social business practices. We also wanted to be highly practical – today’s experts need a suite of apps they can quickly access when a crisis threatens to break.
Social media marketing, in its many forms, has taken the business world by storm. The compelling speed, costeffectiveness and customer engagement benefits of social media campaigns are rewriting the rules of marketing. But so much is happening so fast that it’s impossible to keep track of all the options. The good news is that you don’t have to boil the ocean. Effective social media campaigns require a disciplined approach to setting strategy, choosing tools and building customer affinity. Stay focused and you’ll be fine. In this presentation, you will learn:
* The strengths and weaknesses of the major social media platforms as marketing and public relations tools.
* How to choose the right tools for a campaign.
* Strategies for tracking performance and measuring success.

In his BlogWell Philadelphia Presentation, "The Power of Social: The Secret Formula for Uncovering Social Solutions," BlackRock's Director of eBusiness, Jonathan Haley, shares how they used the power of social media for internal collaboration - and in turn, paved the path for an external strategy.
Last week I had the pleasure of attending the Social Fresh conference in Tampa, Florida (they have a West Coast version coming up this summer – check it out!). Besides basking in the Florida sunshine, the conference had a tremendous amount to offer. With 300 attendees and a range of presenters, including Chris Brogan, Ted Rubin, Jay Baer and more, my mind was literally exploding at the incredible social insights shared over this two-day event.

Understanding User Needs and Satisfying ThemAggregage
https://www.productmanagementtoday.com/frs/26903918/understanding-user-needs-and-satisfying-them
We know we want to create products which our customers find to be valuable. Whether we label it as customer-centric or product-led depends on how long we've been doing product management. There are three challenges we face when doing this. The obvious challenge is figuring out what our users need; the non-obvious challenges are in creating a shared understanding of those needs and in sensing if what we're doing is meeting those needs.
In this webinar, we won't focus on the research methods for discovering user-needs. We will focus on synthesis of the needs we discover, communication and alignment tools, and how we operationalize addressing those needs.
Industry expert Scott Sehlhorst will:
• Introduce a taxonomy for user goals with real world examples
• Present the Onion Diagram, a tool for contextualizing task-level goals
• Illustrate how customer journey maps capture activity-level and task-level goals
• Demonstrate the best approach to selection and prioritization of user-goals to address
• Highlight the crucial benchmarks, observable changes, in ensuring fulfillment of customer needs

Lets look at that value that was affected by the hype bubble
Functional value assists in the breaking of functional fixedness, assists in helping to reframe a concept. This is the value of the investmentLets talk about valueTake a step behind the numbers, at the causal relationship between our activity and the state of mind for most clients Two types of value to a client Financial value – ROIExecutional value I want to focus on executional value
So why did that happen
An explosion of touchpoints
An explosion of new touchpoints and tactics, new consumer behaviour
The value of getting into it, being awesome.

Suddenly we were scrambling
So what did we do? Default to old habits- media, incentives….
Just bigger call centers
But foremost we created an expectation and comprehension gap
However we see lines like this
Prices – Cost
Prices – Cost
Bubble
Taking stock and doing a quick survey. What are we left with?
Where was the burden of proof?
Created a structure of meaning that was at odds with how we wanted people to think of the challenges
Functional fixedness – we did not provide the new functional value to change the fixedness
Real challenges
Never be at the bottom of the funnel
True engagement levels are low
Penetration into the mainstream is misleading
No standard in measurement makes it hard to quantify value
Commercialism transformed community into ‘what’s in it for me’
Genuine identities are difficult to identify
Facebook monopoly, is that all that exists
Clients see it Not as a dialog, but a negotiation
Continuity vs asynchronous
Planning and display for a mutable ecosystem
Continuity of an individual
Source vs motivation disconnectFraming a consumer based on entry as opposed to motivation
Earned vs paid vs owned
Time scale
If you build it, they probably wont come
Prices – Cost
