Tesco first opened in 1929 in London after its founder combined the initials of his name with the first two letters of the tea company he had previously purchased. Marks & Spencer started as a garment manufacturer but has expanded into other areas like food, home goods, and beauty products, with stores now operating as full shopping centers. British Home Stores was founded in 1928 by American entrepreneurs and primarily sold clothing and household items in its branches located in high streets and shopping centers. Sainsbury's was established in 1869 in London and became the largest UK grocery retailer by 1922, helping pioneer self-service retailing in the country during its peak in the 1980s.
