When considering the topic of health benefits and the risks of running long distances the well known story of the original marathoner Pheidippides is
often brought up. The story is often told that Pheidippides, after running nearly twenty–six miles from Marathon to Athens to declare that the Athenians
had won the Battle of Marathon, fell dead from exhaustion. This version of the first marathon often casts a negative light on the health benefits of
running. However, this is not the full story. The real story involves Pheidippides traveling one hundred forty miles in an attempt to recruit the Spartans
to aid the Athenians in their upcoming battle; then running again the return trip to report to the Athenians that aid would not be coming before the
Persians arrived to battle. Finally, he ran the twenty–six miles to Athens to report the Athenian victory. That is when he finally collapsed from wounds

The Battles of Marathon and Salamis each play an extremely important in early Greek History for many reasons. They were not only battles in which
the Greeks showed their military prowess, but they were both battles which if lost, the future of Greece would most likely have been changed forever.
On this day, September 11th in the year 490 BC, off of the Eastern Coast of Greece, a fleet of ships was amassing in the distance headed towards
the beach of Marathon. A massive fleet of 600 ships filled to the brim with Persian invaders, their goal was to invade and occupy the city of
Athens, which would have given them an extremely vital mainland base in the center of early Greece. The Persian army consisted of 30,000 highly
skilled troops from all over the Persian Empire; the Greeks had about 11,000 troops. The Persians had horsemen from East Asia and archers from
India, where the Greeks only had their high armored foot soldiers who had seen very little battles in their lives. At the time Athens was the most
influential city because it had adopted the early Greek way of governing called Democracy. Athens had exiled its king and moved into a democratic

motivated, independent, and strive toward self–direction and autonomy. They take the initiative to diagnose their learning needs, formulate learning
goals, identify resources for learning, implement learning strategies, and evaluate learning outcomes. The following is a reflection on an interview I
did with my best friend Steve regarding self–directed learning.

Steve is one of my best friends from high school. He was chosen since he had just finished running a Marathon a couple of months back. This intrigued
me since as far back as I can remember, when we played high school football together, he hated to run. I wanted to know what was the reason behind a
person not wanting to run at all back then and now all of sudden running 26.2 miles.
I started by asking him why he chose running a marathon as the learning activity? The activity was chosen as part of the bucket list he created a

However, in some way I got fascinated and curious after hearing the orientation and learning the nature of the work that upon admission almost
instantaneously, I picked up the Surgical Technologist text book and started perusing the pages to get a glimpse of what is ahead.
This is the same in the days after I got registered to run my first event and how I ardently developed fortitude and a desire of finishing my first
marathon that right away, I began researching and reading information from running publications about doing a marathon.

room (mock at the beginning) as a surgical technology student.
The long stretch of open road and the hills that you must run, mile after mile to build stamina and the long lectures and instructions both in the
classroom and in your clinical site, that you must pay attention to gain proficiency seems to be daunting at first. But, my enthusiasm grown out of
curiosity and ambition is what drives me; both on the track and in the classroom, to move up to the different levels of my training and learning.

On April 15th, 2013, two separate bombings occurred near the finish line of the Boston Marathon resulting in three deaths and approximately 264
injuries. Two Chechen brothers, Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who were suspected of planting the devices were quickly hunted by thousands of
law officials. Tamerlan was shot several times and pronounced dead at the scene. The younger brother, Dzhokhar, was eventually captured and was
indicted on thirty charges relating to homegrown terrorism, including use of a weapon of mass destruction of property and death. He was found guilty
on all charges on April 8th, 2015 and the following month was sentenced to death.

Two Chechen brothers, Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who were suspected of planting the devices were quickly hunted by thousands of law officials. Tamerlan was shot several times and pronounced dead at the scene. The younger brother, Dzhokhar, was eventually captured and was indicted on thirty charges relating to homegrown terrorism, including use of a weapon of mass destruction of property and death.
