The Taguchi
method:
Taguchi method also called the Robust design method,
pioneered by Dr. Genichi Taguchi in 1940s greatly
improves the engineering productivity.
• This method is one of the powerful available methods
to reduce the product cost, improve quality and reduce
the development interval.
• A large number of experimental works has been done
when process parameters are increased along their
levels.
• To solve this,Taguchi method is used with the design of
orthogonal arrays to study all the parameters of
turning operation.

Designing steps of Taguchi Method:
He proposed the optimization in three steps:
System Design:It’s the
development of system to function
under the set of initial nominal
conditions.
Parametric design:The
objective here is to select the
optimum levels to work and give
maximum results under given
conditions.
Tolerance design:Narrower
tolerance ranges must be used for
those design factors whose variation
leads to a large negativity influence
on output operations.this method is
very expensive to use.

It’s one of the most
important machining
process which can
produce wide variety
of parts.
primarily,it’s used to
produce the cylindrical
surfaces.
Single point cutting
tool is used in this
process.
The feed is
parallel to the
axis of rotating
workpiece.
Primary motion is
of workpiece and
sec motion if of
feed.

Feed:the distance that the tool moves on workpiece per
revolution
• A finer feed is required for better finishing.
Cutting speed: the relative speed between workpiece and
the cutting tool.it is given by; v=3.14DN/1000=m/min
• D=diameter of workpiece,N=speed in rpm.
Depth of cut: it measures how much the cutting tool n
penetrates into the workpiece.
Nose radius: nose radius makes the cut smooth as it can
overlap the previous cut and eliminates the peaks.

Material removal rate
MRR is defined as the material removed per unit
time.Speed,feed and depth of cut together
determine the MRR.
MRR =V(f)(D) ( mm^3/sec.)
Where; V=speed ,f=feed rate and d=depth of cut
.
MRR can also be found by using experiments. It
is the ratio of diff. of initial weight and
final weight to the time taken.
 MRR=initial weight-final
weight/time taken

Cutting forces
The relative forces in a turning operation are very important parameters in the
design of machine tool.
These are the following forces in turning operation;
Tangential force: It acts downward on the tool tip allowing the workpieces to
deflect upward.
Feed force: this force pushes the tool away from the chuck.

  • 7. Feed:the distance that the tool moves on workpiece per revolution • A finer feed is required for better finishing. Cutting speed: the relative speed between workpiece and the cutting tool.it is given by; v=3.14DN/1000=m/min • D=diameter of workpiece,N=speed in rpm. Depth of cut: it measures how much the cutting tool n penetrates into the workpiece. Nose radius: nose radius makes the cut smooth as it can overlap the previous cut and eliminates the peaks. www.ijetmas.com
  • 8. Material removal rate MRR is defined as the material removed per unit time.Speed,feed and depth of cut together determine the MRR. MRR =V(f)(D) ( mm^3/sec.) Where; V=speed ,f=feed rate and d=depth of cut . MRR can also be found by using experiments.
