2. • Calcium carbide chemical formula is CaC2.
• Calcium carbide is primarily used for producing acetylene gas and calcium cyanamide.
• People used acetylene gas for home lighting starting in the 1890s.
• It was also used in lamps for mining purposes.
• Pure calcium carbide is colourless , but technical-grade calcium carbide (80-85%) is grey
or brown and contains various compounds like calcium oxide, calcium phosphide, calcium
sulphide , calcium nitride, and silicon carbide.
• Technical-grade calcium carbide produces unpleasant smell to warn leaks, fires, or
explosions.
• Thomas Willson discovered the process for preparing calcium carbide in an electric arc
furnace in 1892.
• Willson sold his discovery to a company called Union Carbide.
INTRODUCTION
3. 1. Limestone (Calcium Carbonate CaCO3)
2. Carbon-rich material
3. Electric Arc Furnace
The basic process involves heating a mixture of limestone and carbon-rich material in the
electric arc furnace to temperatures above 2,000°C . This intense heat causes the calcium
and carbon to react, forming calcium carbide.
