3. 1) INTRODUCTION
The Bhagavad-Gita is celestial song which is not esoteric only but it is
meant for all children of God for drawing solace, peace, tranquility,
equanimity and inspiration to perform duty successfully in the face of
dilemma about goal.
It offers a holistic integration of three essential ingredients of
effectiveness – Knowledge, devotion and action.
4. 2) Dilemma and Strategic Management
• O Krsna ! My limbs quail, my mouth goes dry, my body
shakes and my hair stands on end.
• The Gandiva bow slips from my hand and my skin too
is burning all over. I am not able to stand steady. My
mind is reeling.
Now this is the usual dilemma faced by every
manager. They fail to take objective stand when
their own relatives and friends are involved in
any decision.
Thus, a manager must avoid element of I, my,
mine – others while taking a decision.
5. In management, dilemma arises due to role conflicts and
lack of clarity about mission. Duty is Dharma. Advice of
seniors should be sought with humility, open mind and full
trust. Depression arises due to attachments to kiths and kins
rather than commitment to duty, i.e. Dharma.
Strategic Management requires up to date timely
information, impartial analysis, competent advice, timely
decision and execution, independence of mind and
approach. Non-attachment to selfish motives or holistic
approach.
6. 3) Counselling By The Leader
• Krsna told that why he (Arjuna) has
developed dejection of spirit in this hour of
crisis? It is not liked by Aryans; it does not
lead to heaven and it causes disgrace(on
earth). O Arjuna.
• Your right is solely in action and never in
its fruits; let not fruits of action be your
motive; nor let there be any attachment
of yours to inaction
7. Aryan means a person of good conduct consisting of courage, courtesy,
nobility and straight dealing; emotional stability, firmness in critical
moments.
A good counsellor should give advice in proper sequence :-
1. Tell the client what is he
2. Avoid grief for what is beyond control
3. Make his duty clear
4. To perform duty with pure intellect
5. To be detached from fruits (selfish motives)
6. Qualities of knowledge yogi and buddhi yogi
7. He must become a good human being before he can be a good executive
8. 4) Lead others by Good Conduct
Leaders must lead people through their
exemplary work/conduct.
Yath Raja tatha praja – Quality of
governance of any organization can’t be
better than quality of its
Leader/CEO/Head.
People will respect his orders/words
willingly when his own conduct is worth-
emulating. • Whatever a great man(leader) does,
the same is done by people. It
becomes a standard or norm, the
people follow.
9. 5) CONTROLLING
Krsna is a leader. He has given a hint about
role of Leader/CEOs.
They must restore order and rule of
Dharma(ethics/duty) in the organisations.
They have duty to protect good people and
punish/eliminate wicked or non-performers.
• O Bharata(Arjuna) ! I incarnate myself whenever
there is a decline of righteousness(Dharma) and rise
of Adharma.
• I come into being from age-to-age for the protection
of the good, for the destruction of the wicked and
for the establishment of righteousness(Dharma).
10. 6) Base of Division
This is made very clear that the four-fold
order division are based on aptitude and
function. It has nothing to do with caste,
sex, breeding etc.
All functional classes are equally
important for an organization –
Intellectual or Knowledge resources,
administrators, Businessmen and
supportive services.
• The four-fold order (Chaturvarna : Brahmin,
Kshtriya, Vaishya, Shudra has been created by
Me according to division of Quality(aptitude)
and work (action/function/duty). Though I am its
creator, know me incapable of action or change.
11. 7) Real Promotion
Self-realized and self controlled
souls accept duty as Dharma and
do it excellently with knowledge,
devotion and action
They are fit for top
positions(supreme status) in an
organization
• Man has two options :-
(i) Lead life through dark way(ignorance)and
continue the cycle of rebirth
(ii) Lead life through light way (knowledge,
devotion etc)
and attain the supreme status of no birth
12. 8) Identification of Human Nature
Demonic qualities be controlled
and Divine qualities be used
effectively
Person be chosen according to his
qualities and qualities required for
a particular job(assignment)
Managers should identify a
person with born qualities
• Demonic person has the following major
Qualities :- Ostentation, Arrogance,
Excessive pride, Anger, Harshness,
Ignorance
13. 9) Incentive to Deserving Person
Good Manager/leaders should give Sattvik daan (give in
a proper place, time and to deserving person)
Rajasik daan (wrong place or time to an undeserving
person) is a bribe or deal which is unethical
Tamasik daan (without proper ceremony or with
contempt) is wastage of wealth
• The gift or donation or daan which is made
to one from whom no return is expected,
with a feeling of duty, given in proper place,
time and to deserving person
14. 10) Factors of action in an Organization
In management parlance, five cases or factors of actions
are :-
a) Planning, Controlling and Motivation : Management
(adhisthan)
b) Operating manpower(doers/agent), middle
management
c) Equipment or tools of action : Physical
resources/technology/finance
d) Efforts : Start, progress, review, adjustment, compliance
e) Destiny/Luck
• Adhisthana (Physical body), Karta
(doer or agent), instruments, cesta
(efforts), daivam (providence) are the
five factors of action
15. 11) Self Confidence
No work should be left on the ground that it
has some defect.
It should be given up only when it does not suit
one’s aptitude
• One should not give-up the work
suited to one’s nature, O Arjuna,
though it may be defective for there is
no enterprise which has no defect as
fire is clouded by smoke
16. 12) Conclusion
Master key to effective
management is combination of
wisdom leadership with devoted
executives.
This will guarantee prosperity
(productivity) and well-beings in
society / organizations.
God may advise but you have to
perform.
Renounce fruits and attachments,
and not work itself. This is main
advice of Krsna.
