What is Managed Service Provider
A managed service provider (MSP) is a type of IT service
company that provides server, network, and specialized
applications to end users and organizations. These
applications are hosted and managed by the service
provider.
Managed service providers tend to be Web hosting or
application service providers that allow users to
outsource their network and application resource
procedures under a delivery agreement.
Types of Managed Services
Pure Play MSPs: It tend to have a smaller worldwide footprint and define
themselves more as a management service provider than a managed service
provider. They focus on monitoring network and applications performance
Staffing-legacy MSPs: Typically have separate MSP and staffing divisions
which operate independently of each other. These mid-level MSPs take great
pride in offering as wide a range of services as possible, and they take greater
responsibility for a client’s business.
High-level MSPs: Offer true one-stop shopping, allowing their clients to
outsource their entire IT operations if they so desire. They also offer the lower
levels of service that mid-level MSPs do, as well as a full range of long-established
managed services.
How to Manage a Managed
Service Provider
Vet the technical team: An MSP should feel like an extension of your IT
organization. Though you may be outsourcing to an MSP to offload the hassle of managing
an internal team, the onus is still on you to make sure the people you’ll be working with
have the right technical and people skills to ensure a positive working relationship.
Consider the terms of the agreement: Like any professional services
organization, MSPs are looking for recurring revenue.
Manage costs: When you first start with an MSP, they will work closely with you to
get to know your network so they can offer the right solution, and will also be looking for
opportunities to offer you additional services.
Lock in service and support: Like any service agreement, it is critical to
establish a service-level agreement (SLA) – whether that’s a specific uptime guarantee or
premium support. It is also critical to establish and document what level of proactive
maintenance and consultancy you expect.

Pros of Managed Services
• It is the responsibility of the MSP to fully manage IT to the expectations of the
business owner and/or management team (Client). This frees the Client to
fully focus on its core activities to achieve their business goals.
• A knowledgeable and qualified MSP can bring best practices to projects and IT
management that can provide short-term and long-term benefits.
• Employee and knowledge retention are no longer a concern, as MPS bring a
full team of experts and tools to you, not just an individual.
• When Managed Services are implemented correctly, a MSP can save the
Client real dollars when compared to the cost of a full-time employee.
Cons of Managed Services
• Unqualified MSPs can be reluctant to assume full management and
support responsibilities for IT.
• Miscommunication between MSPs and a Client can lead to lack of
understanding and misaligned priorities.
• If the MSP is executing the job properly, resulting in IT functioning
properly and smoothly, it is often difficult for the Client to
understand what they are paying for.
• Clients are often caught in the middle between an application
provider (or any other vendor) and the MSP when there is a
problem. This is mitigated when the MSP takes responsibility to get
the problem fixed by working with the other vendor.

  • 2. What is Managed Service Provider A managed service provider (MSP) is a type of IT service company that provides server, network, and specialized applications to end users and organizations. These applications are hosted and managed by the service provider. Managed service providers tend to be Web hosting or application service providers that allow users to outsource their network and application resource procedures under a delivery agreement.
  • 3. Types of Managed Services Pure Play MSPs: It tend to have a smaller worldwide footprint and define themselves more as a management service provider than a managed service provider. They focus on monitoring network and applications performance Staffing-legacy MSPs: Typically have separate MSP and staffing divisions which operate independently of each other. These mid-level MSPs take great pride in offering as wide a range of services as possible, and they take greater responsibility for a client’s business. High-level MSPs: Offer true one-stop shopping, allowing their clients to outsource their entire IT operations if they so desire. They also offer the lower levels of service that mid-level MSPs do, as well as a full range of long-established managed services.
  • 4. How to Manage a Managed Service Provider Vet the technical team: An MSP should feel like an extension of your IT organization. Though you may be outsourcing to an MSP to offload the hassle of managing an internal team, the onus is still on you to make sure the people you’ll be working with have the right technical and people skills to ensure a positive working relationship. Consider the terms of the agreement: Like any professional services organization, MSPs are looking for recurring revenue. Manage costs: When you first start with an MSP, they will work closely with you to get to know your network so they can offer the right solution, and will also be looking for opportunities to offer you additional services. Lock in service and support: Like any service agreement, it is critical to establish a service-level agreement (SLA) – whether that’s a specific uptime guarantee or premium support. It is also critical to establish and document what level of proactive maintenance and consultancy you expect.

This frees the Client to fully focus on its core activities to achieve their business goals. • A knowledgeable and qualified MSP can bring best practices to projects and IT management that can provide short-term and long-term benefits. • Employee and knowledge retention are no longer a concern, as MPS bring a full team of experts and tools to you, not just an individual. • When Managed Services are implemented correctly, a MSP can save the Client real dollars when compared to the cost of a full-time employee.

Cons of Managed Services • Unqualified MSPs can be reluctant to assume full management and support responsibilities for IT. • Miscommunication between MSPs and a Client can lead to lack of understanding and misaligned priorities. • If the MSP is executing the job properly, resulting in IT functioning properly and smoothly, it is often difficult for the Client to understand what they are paying for. • Clients are often caught in the middle between an application provider (or any other vendor) and the MSP when there is a problem. This is mitigated when the MSP takes responsibility to get the problem fixed by working with the other vendor.
