Mama June, whose real name is June Shannon, was a controversial character from the
start. She first got pregnant at the age of 14 and dropped out of high school (though
she later earned her GED). Over the course of her life, she’s dated several convicted
child molesters, including her daughter Alanna’s father Mike Thompson.

Sadly, one of the most distinguishing features of Mama June was always her weight. At
her heaviest, the reality television star weighed a shocking 460 pounds.
In 2020 the reality star from “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo” ran off with her troubled
boyfriend Geno Doak amid their crack cocaine arrest. This might explain why in
February 2019 she gained all the weight back ( revealed in the “From Not To Hot”
trailer). Mama June rose to fame on the back of her daughter Alana ‘Honey Boo Boo’
Thompson, who was the star of a reality show that was hugely popular on both sides of
the Atlantic.
Mama June launched herself into the spotlight as the proud plus-size mum of child
beauty queen Honey Boo Boo — but it was her car-crash love life and outrageous antics
that kept her family in the headlines.
But, after years of struggling with her weight, June Shannon decided it was time for a
body overhaul.
Having ballooned to 460lb — nearly 33 stone, or 208kg — from years of binge-eating
junk food and doing no exercise, June’s wake-up call came when her ex Sugar Bear —
real name Mike Thompson — invited her to his wedding.
The reality mum took extreme measures to slim down in 2017, opting for a gastric
sleeve to physically restrict herself from overeating.
Now a size four, she says she’s made lots of healthy swaps in her diet to lose weight and
keep it off.
In an interview with People magazine, her trainer, Kenya Crooks, shared a few of Mama
June’s healthy eating strategies — and they’re pretty smart.
Mama June says that she had already cut out soda by the time she decided to undergo
her weight-loss journey. She says she went “cold turkey,” giving up her usual three to
four Mountain Dew Code Reds a day after she was in car accident and was told by a

In November 2015, Mama June told Daily Mail that walking helped with her weight
loss. Her thoughts on walking three to five miles per day were: “Once you get started
with the kids you don’t think about it,” she said. “You’re walking and you’re like ‘I’ve
already walked three miles!’”
The former Here Comes Honey Boo Boostar underwent gastric sleeve surgery in 2016,
dropping down to a size 4 from 460 pounds!
Mama June underwent bariatric surgery, having part of her stomach removed as part
of a sleeve gastrectomy, in 2016 and reportedly lost more than 300 pounds thanks to
the surgery. Dieting and her personal trainer, Kenya Crooks also influenced the weight
loss.
But her struggle didn’t stop magically in 2016. The months that followed her gastric
sleeve fitting, June was still prone to bingeing on rich, calorific foods — which made

During an episode of Mama June: From Not To Hot (March 2017), she confessed that:
“I’m joining a small weight-loss support group. Although I got rid of out all my junk
food, it would be great to get some help to keep the weight off long-term. I mean, I’m
really nervous about walking into a room of people I don’t know and talking about my
overeating. I’m scared, but I’ve got to do something.”
In addition to her significant weight loss, she underwent cosmetic surgery, spending a
reported $75,000 towards getting a boob job and skin removal surgery to nip and tuck
9lb worth of excess skin on her stomach, arms and neck to look slimmer all over.
The “Mama June weight loss news” became a huge deal and she even bagged a reality
TV show, Mama June: From Not to Hot. This aired on We TV on February 24, 2017.
The second season premiered on January 5, 2018.
In 2018, Mama June sadly put on weight. She tried to break into the glamorous world
of adult beauty pageants, and turned to a keto diet to help her shift the extra pounds.
Keto, which champions a diet low in carbohydrates and high in good fats and protein, is
good for weight-loss as it forces the body to burn its own stores of fat rather than quick
and easy glucose in the form of carbs and sugar.
“I’ve tried the keto diet — It’s like, cheese, eggs, protein, meat. And you honestly lose
weight with that so it’s not that bad.” June said in a BUILD Series interview in the
summer of 2018. However, in May 2018, a trailer for the second series of From Not To
Hot showed that Mama June was back struggling with her weight after piling on 25lb

June lost an incredible 300lb — 21 stone, or 136kg — in a year, slimming down to a US
size 4 (UK size 8), and credited a shift in her sleeping pattern with her new figure as
she was regularly napping until 1pm every day to avoid eating breakfast.
“It’s not easy to eat like you’re ‘supposed to’ and hit the gym all the time, but I’m just
trying to maintain it the best I can,” she told People magazine a year after the
operation.
“This sounds bad, but I’m more of a snacker.”
However, in May 2018, a trailer for the second series of From Not To Hot showed June
was back struggling with her weight after piling on 25lb from her previous lowest
weight.
She also takes the help of her personal trainer, Natasha Fett, who is also her diet
coach. Natasha started incorporating healthy eating into June’s lifestyle slowly. She did
not take away Mama June’s all favorite foods completely. Fett recommended June to
eat carbs early in the day and reduce her fat intake later in the day. She also allowed
Mama June to consume healthy fats like avocado and almond butter, hummus, celery,
and slow-digesting foods like brown rice, lentils, sweet potatoes, and beans.
Tea and coffee may sound terrible to people who do not like these caffeinated
beverages. But the reason Fett allowed tea and coffee is that Mama June, like many of
us, had a wrong notion that drinking protein shakes would help her lose the weight. In
fact, protein shakes are loaded with added sugar, which is not apt for those who are
trying to lose weight and not very active. Tea and coffee help suppress appetite, have 0–
3 calories (without sugar and cream), and are great energy boosters.

Having a good and heavy breakfast is essential for keeping the weight off and
preventing overeating junk food throughout the day. Not skipping breakfast is another
way to maintain the lost weight.
Mama June also takes a couple of weight loss supplements — apple cider vinegar and
garcinia cambogia for weight loss. These work by suppressing the appetite, increasing

She transformed to 350 pounds firstly and then vowed to look “completely different”
after her transformation. She promised to turn to size 4 before her ex’s wedding, the
same “Sugar Bear” guy, in the name of revenge for adultery and unfaithfulness.

Mama June started with a low-impact exercise like walking. Now, that she has lost a lot
of weight and somewhat recovered from the surgery, she is ready to take on some high-
intensity cardio to took slender and toned.
In an interview with Daily Mail, she said, “Once you get started with the kids you don’t
think about it, you’re walking and you’re like ‘I’ve already walked three miles!” She also
said that she keeps herself busy, which prevents her from wanting to eat every time.
She told In Touch Weekly, “Honestly, when I first started losing weight, it was just being
more active, being busy with the show and doing more things with Here Comes Honey
Boo Boo.
Crooks, who created his own fitness method specifically for weight loss also helped
Mama June to achieve her weight loss goals. “I essentially asked her what she wanted
to improve and make sexier,” Crooks says. “I believe language is very important when
trying to help a client. I never say ‘What don’t you like about yourself?’ because that’s
negative and defeated language. Mama June wanted to lose weight and tone up at the

To accomplish it, Crooks worked out with her two to three times a week, in person or
through Skype. To meet Mama June’s intense weight-loss goals, Crooks focused on core
moves like elbow crunches — a variation on a standard crunch where you bring your
knees up to meet your elbows (three sets of 20), reaching sit-ups (three sets of 20), and
Russian twists using a medicine ball (as many as she could stand). Check out Mama

Nutrition was also a big part of her transformation. “I really stressed lean meats,
vegetables, and fruits,” Crooks says, in addition to reducing her portion sizes.

The made-for-TV transformation is pretty stunning, but that doesn’t mean it was easy,
says Crooks. “When you decide to lose weight, you have to be a little selfish and
focused all the time. Mama June is a giver, and it’s hard for her to say ‘no’ sometimes,”
he says. “I had to remind her that this is her time. I had to say ‘You can’t be everything
to everybody else and be nothing to yourself.’ Once she gave herself permission to put
herself first, she was fine.”
While Mama June’s transformation is incredible, an intense workout and/or eating

June Shannon’s weight loss transformation didn’t happen in secret. The WEtv
documentary called Mama June: From Not to Hot chronicled the dramatic
transformation. The biggest catalyst for change was Mama June’s gastric sleeve surgery
in 2016. During the procedure, which is an alternative to the more well-known gastric
bypass, the stomach’s size is reduced by about 75%. This helps you feel full longer and
forces you to reduce your caloric intake dramatically.
In addition to having gastric sleeve surgery, Mama June worked with a professional
trainer named Kenya Crooks. Her goal for weight loss? Fitting into a long sleeved, size
4 dress, which she planned to wear to her ex’s wedding. And making him regret letting
her go, of course.
Weight loss surgery almost guarantees that a person will lose weight. Still, it requires
some amount of commitment and lifestyle changes. Mama June committed to a new,
healthier diet plan which included drastically reduces portion sizes. She also began
getting serious about exercise. “I’ve worked my ass off, working out, getting healthy,”
she said. “And now I feel like becoming the person on the outside that I always felt like
on the inside.”
Weight loss wasn’t the only change that Mama June made to her appearance. Like
many other gastric sleeve patients, Shannon also opted for skin removal surgery
following her fast weight loss results. Then she scheduled a breast augmentation and

The operation itself removes about 80 percent of a person’s stomach and fashions
what’s left into what looks like a sleeve, LePort says. “It works by reducing the volume
of food that can be held in the stomach,” he says. The surgery also removes significant
portions of the stomach that have hormones that promote hunger, including ghrelin,
says Fatima Cody Stanford, M.D., M.P.H., an instructor of medicine and pediatrics at
Harvard Medical School and obesity medicine physician at Massachusetts General
Hospital. “With the removal, the brain communicates with the stomach differently,”
she says. People feel differently about hunger — they’re not as hungry and may feel full
quicker, which often leads to a significant weight loss, Stanford says.
If one does weight loss surgery then it is guaranteed that her weight loss will have
occurred definitely. That was really a very true thing that we got to know after the
surgery of Mama June. But if you depend just only on the surgery that will really be
very dangerous for you. After the surgery, your metabolic function may be distracted.
So, your body may dis function. That’s why it is important to take care of yourself after
the surgery.
Not everyone who wants to lose weight will qualify for the surgery, though. While
insurance companies may have their own requirements for coverage, Stanford says that
the medical community wants a person to have a BMI of at least 35, in addition to
diabetes, hypertension, or sleep apnea, to qualify. People also have to show that they’ve
failed other attempts at weight loss, and need to undergo psychological evaluation to
show that this is a good weight-loss strategy for them, Stanford says.
Once a person has the surgery, they’ll typically lose between 60 and 80 percent of their
excess weight, LePort says. Meaning, if they are 100 pounds overweight, they’re
expected to lose between 60 and 80 pounds after the surgery and keep it off for at least
six years. Besides weight loss, the surgery also has been shown to improve diabetes and

June’s Message to People
Mama June talks about her maintaining the weight she has of size 4 frame. She says,
‘It’s not easy to eat like you’re supposed to and hit the gym all the time but I’m just
trying to maintain it the best I can. She insisted that it’s all about portion control. June
accepts in an interview that she sleeps till 1 pm and skips her breakfast. She knows it is
bad for health but that was one of her ways to avoid food.
June adds, “I don’t want to disappoint anybody and not be the skinny Mama June that
everybody is looking forward to. But if I go through something that’s as serious as the
next surgery- it cannot be about making everyone happy — it’s gotta be about me.”
There was that June who was shredding her weight just to look sexy in her ex’s
wedding and then there ’s another June who got motivated to love her body and she
started losing her weight and being healthy just for herself.
Well though it is said, ‘Love yourself first or else no one will do.’ Don’t do something
just to show others that what you can do. Instead, understand your potentials and do
things for yourself. Don’t please others but please yourself. We can conclude from
June’s story to love and prioritize your health over anything. As it is said, “Precaution is

  • 2. Sadly, one of the most distinguishing features of Mama June was always her weight. At her heaviest, the reality television star weighed a shocking 460 pounds. In 2020 the reality star from “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo” ran off with her troubled boyfriend Geno Doak amid their crack cocaine arrest. This might explain why in February 2019 she gained all the weight back ( revealed in the “From Not To Hot” trailer). Mama June rose to fame on the back of her daughter Alana ‘Honey Boo Boo’ Thompson, who was the star of a reality show that was hugely popular on both sides of the Atlantic. Mama June launched herself into the spotlight as the proud plus-size mum of child beauty queen Honey Boo Boo — but it was her car-crash love life and outrageous antics that kept her family in the headlines. But, after years of struggling with her weight, June Shannon decided it was time for a body overhaul. Having ballooned to 460lb — nearly 33 stone, or 208kg — from years of binge-eating junk food and doing no exercise, June’s wake-up call came when her ex Sugar Bear — real name Mike Thompson — invited her to his wedding. Her thoughts on walking three to five miles per day were: “Once you get started with the kids you don’t think about it,” she said. “You’re walking and you’re like ‘I’ve already walked three miles!’” The former Here Comes Honey Boo Boostar underwent gastric sleeve surgery in 2016, dropping down to a size 4 from 460 pounds! Although I got rid of out all my junk food, it would be great to get some help to keep the weight off long-term. The second season premiered on January 5, 2018. In 2018, Mama June sadly put on weight. She tried to break into the glamorous world of adult beauty pageants, and turned to a keto diet to help her shift the extra pounds. Image June lost an incredible 300lb — 21 stone, or 136kg — in a year, slimming down to a US size 4 (UK size 8), and credited a shift in her sleeping pattern with her new figure as she was regularly napping until 1pm every day to avoid eating breakfast. “It’s not easy to eat like you’re ‘supposed to’ and hit the gym all the time, but I’m just trying to maintain it the best I can,” she told People magazine a year after the operation. “This sounds bad, but I’m more of a snacker.” However, in May 2018, a trailer for the second series of From Not To Hot showed June was back struggling with her weight after piling on 25lb from her previous lowest weight.   • 7. Mama June Weight Loss Workout Image Mama June started with a low-impact exercise like walking. Now, that she has lost a lot of weight and somewhat recovered from the surgery, she is ready to take on some high- intensity cardio to took slender and toned. In an interview with Daily Mail, she said, “Once you get started with the kids you don’t think about it, you’re walking and you’re like ‘I’ve already walked three miles!” She also said that she keeps herself busy, which prevents her from wanting to eat every time. She told In Touch Weekly, “Honestly, when I first started losing weight, it was just being more active, being busy with the show and doing more things with Here Comes Honey Boo Boo.

Crooks, who created his own fitness method specifically for weight loss also helped Mama June to achieve her weight loss goals. “I essentially asked her what she wanted to improve and make sexier,” Crooks says. “I believe language is very important when trying to help a client. I never say ‘What don’t you like about yourself?’ because that’s negative and defeated language. Mama June is a giver, and it’s hard for her to say ‘no’ sometimes,” he says. “I had to remind her that this is her time. The biggest catalyst for change was Mama June’s gastric sleeve surgery in 2016. During the procedure, which is an alternative to the more well-known gastric bypass, the stomach’s size is reduced by about 75%. This helps you feel full longer and forces you to reduce your caloric intake dramatically.
  • 10. In addition to having gastric sleeve surgery, Mama June worked with a professional trainer named Kenya Crooks. Her goal for weight loss? Fitting into a long sleeved, size 4 dress, which she planned to wear to her ex’s wedding. And making him regret letting her go, of course. Weight loss surgery almost guarantees that a person will lose weight. Still, it requires some amount of commitment and lifestyle changes. Mama June committed to a new, healthier diet plan which included drastically reduces portion sizes. She also began getting serious about exercise. “I’ve worked my ass off, working out, getting healthy,” she said. “And now I feel like becoming the person on the outside that I always felt like on the inside.” Weight loss wasn’t the only change that Mama June made to her appearance. Like many other gastric sleeve patients, Shannon also opted for skin removal surgery following her fast weight loss results. The operation itself removes about 80 percent of a person’s stomach and fashions what’s left into what looks like a sleeve, LePort says. “It works by reducing the volume of food that can be held in the stomach,” he says. The surgery also removes significant portions of the stomach that have hormones that promote hunger, including ghrelin, says Fatima Cody Stanford, M.D., M.P.H., an instructor of medicine and pediatrics at Harvard Medical School and obesity medicine physician at Massachusetts General Hospital. “With the removal, the brain communicates with the stomach differently,” she says. People feel differently about hunger — they’re not as hungry and may feel full quicker, which often leads to a significant weight loss, Stanford says. People also have to show that they’ve failed other attempts at weight loss, and need to undergo psychological evaluation to show that this is a good weight-loss strategy for them, Stanford says. Once a person has the surgery, they’ll typically lose between 60 and 80 percent of their excess weight, LePort says. Meaning, if they are 100 pounds overweight, they’re expected to lose between 60 and 80 pounds after the surgery and keep it off for at least six years. She says, ‘It’s not easy to eat like you’re supposed to and hit the gym all the time but I’m just trying to maintain it the best I can. She insisted that it’s all about portion control. June accepts in an interview that she sleeps till 1 pm and skips her breakfast. She knows it is bad for health but that was one of her ways to avoid food. June adds, “I don’t want to disappoint anybody and not be the skinny Mama June that everybody is looking forward to. But if I go through something that’s as serious as the next surgery- it cannot be about making everyone happy — it’s gotta be about me.”
