Malcolm X had a difficult childhood, growing up with many siblings in a family threatened by the KKK due to his father's work as a Baptist minister. After his father was killed and mother was institutionalized, Malcolm became a foster child. He later lost interest in school after being told becoming a lawyer was unrealistic as a black man, and turned to crime, spending 10 years in prison. While incarcerated, Malcolm became devoted to the Nation of Islam and its leader Elijah Muhammad. After his release, Malcolm became a minister for the Nation and was involved in the civil rights movement, fighting for equality through speeches and protests. He was assassinated in 1965 by three members of the Nation of Islam.
