Malcolm X began educating himself while in prison through copying dictionaries and reading books. He was frustrated by his inability to express himself clearly in letters. By copying dictionary definitions word for word and reading them aloud, his vocabulary grew dramatically. This newfound knowledge allowed him to finally understand books and open up a new world of learning. He became so engrossed in reading that he was able to forget he was in prison, feeling the freest he had ever been through his self-education.
