ABOUT MALAYSIA

 Located 9374.86 miles across the Pacific Ocean from the United States
 Malaysia’s current population is over 28,700,00
 The official religion is Islam
 Life expectancy at birth is 73, with the median age of 26 years old as of 2011
 Official language spoken is Bahasa Malaysia, and the secondary languages
spoken are English and Chinese.
 Malaysia is newly industrialized, which puts the nation in between developing
and developed status.
POLITICAL ENVIRONMENT

 Constitutional monarchy consisting of a Parliament with two
houses headed by a prime minister, sultans, and a king who acts as
chief of state.

 Legislative power is divided between:
      • Federal and State legislature:
           • A lower house, the House of Representatives, and the upper house, the
             Senate.
CULTURAL ENVIRONMENT

 Malaysia is a multi–ethnic, multicultural, and multilingual society.
      • Separate cultural identities.
 Art and music
 1917 National Culture Policy
      • Policy made it so that only Malay texts are considered official cultural
        documents.
 Strong government control
 Family is important
ECONOMIC ENVIORNMENT

 One of the best economic records in Asia
      •   2010, the GDP was $414,400 billion
      •   29th largest economy in the world
      •   Government has pushed to increase tourism
      •   Negative Effects?
 Exports
      • oil and gas, rubber and tin, palm oil, crude petroleum and petroleum
        products, electronics, textiles, and timber.
 One of the highest standards of living in Southeast Asia
 Major trading partners:
      • the United States, Singapore, Japan, and China.
LEGAL ENVIRONMENT

 Law based on other jurisdictions
      • Federal and State laws
      • Written and Unwritten laws
 Criminal Procedure Code and Contracts Act
 Malaysian land law is based on the Australian Torrens system.
 The Federal Constitution provides the supreme law of the land.
      • Laws, legislation, courts, and other administrative aspects of the law
      • Defines the government and monarch, and their powers, as well as the
        rights of the citizens
TRADE ENVIRONMENT
 Malaysia growth through international trade.
       •   Stabilizing trade policy with other countries to create a more liberal and fair global trade
           environment
       •   Trade arrangements such as free trade agreements
              •   Create quicker and higher levels of liberalization for effective market access between the participating
                  countries.
              •   Topic Malaysia needs to address:
                      • Tariffs and non-tariff measures
                      • Taxes
                      • Facilitation and promotion amongst trade, economic expansion, and financing
                      • Try to increase their efforts of becoming a more developed country with the help of
                           enhancing the competiveness

• The four bilateral federal trade agreements that
  Malaysia has are with Japan, Pakistan, New Zealand,
  and Chile.
TEXTILE AND APPAREL
             INDUSTRY
   Began primarily in the 1970s
   Known for producing and exporting high end products
   Malaysian-produced goods include fibers
        •    man-made and natural-fiber yarns
        •    woven cotton and man-made-fiber fabrics
        •    knitted and crocheted fabrics
        •    tulles, lace, ribbons, trimmings, and embroidery
        •    special yarns, textile fabrics, and related products
   Malaysia behind China, India, and Vietnam when it comes to cheap labor
        •    Still ideal location for U.S., as well as other foreign, companies looking for a highly skilled, educated workforce and a
             government supportive of foreign investment.
   The United States stands as the top export destination for Malaysian goods.
   In 2008, the production index of the textiles segment increased by 8.6% to 102.8 from 94.7 in 2007
   While the production of the apparel segment decreased by 9.5% to 102.5 from 113.3
        •    decline in man-made fiber spinning and the weaving of textiles
        •    decline due to United States’ economic recession
