introduction
Better Towns - Exploration & Model Representation, is the
final project for ENBE. In this project , we are required to
investigate about past, present and future city. Besides,
we have to do a lot of research and reading in order to
collect information for the following topic, better futre
town guildline. In this topic, we are required to propose a
future city which focus on the needs of the people, the
facilities, infrastructures and how it will sustain itself in
the future. Furthermore, the highlight of this project - The
City That I Live In, is one of the most interesting topic. We
are required to investigate and tabulate information about
a city of our hometown that we live in. I have chosen
Malacca as I was born and raise in this city. Malacca is
well known as a historic city and it is one of the most
popular tourism destination in Malaysia.

BROADACRE CITY
TOWN PLANNING PRINCIPLES
Frank Lloyd Wright – American Architect
( June 8, 1867 – April 9, 1959)
He designed more than a thousand projects
which resulted in more than 500 completed
works.
Promoted organic architecture ( exemplified
by Falling Water)
Developed the concept of the Usonian
home ( exemplified by Rosenbaum House )
Was a leader of the Prairie School School of
Architecture ( exemplified by the Robie
House, the Westcott House and the Drawin
D.Martin House.)

What is broadacre city?
" Broadacre City was an urban or suburban
development concept proposed by Frank Lloyd
Wright. Broadacre was a living, breathing behemoth of
Wright’s imagination. "
BROADACRECITYCONCEPT
•Cities should flow over land in 1-acre increments)
• Fits within existing Township and Range land system.
• Traffic congestion will be relieved by spreading out across the countryside.
• Individual family farms provide for the basic needs of families.
• Decentralized government and cultural activities.
• City administration through radio contact
• The Chief Executive of the decentralized city should be its architect,
the person best equipped to see that buildings and occupants are in
harmony.

He thought every person
should have a car and,
eventually, an “aerator”—a
helicopter that could land
without a landing strip.
Architecture
Each city would be embedded in nature and have its own cultural and
educational centers. Wright’s “larger villages” would contain only about
10,000 individuals. In every way, Broadacre was an alternative to the mega-
city. Wright, an ardent individualist, also hated money, land rent and
landlords, and above all, profit and bureaucracy.
Individuals would be generalists and self-supporting,
given the right by government to a one-acre piece of land,
although some would have a one-car garage and some a
five-car garage.
• Architecture should be organic– blend with its environment.
• “Usonian” houses should be easy to build.
• Owners would be competent in many skills; self-sufficient
• House could be built for $5,000.

Melaka Sentral is the state

will arrive if you're coming
from out of state. It's also a
transportation hub. You'll find
public buses and taxis here.
All buses stop in Melaka
Sentral as their last stop.
The trishaw (rickshaw) system is mostly
used by tourists around the historical
tourist spots in town. In no way is it
dependable for effiecient transportation or
fast travel. Obviously, the trishaw is the
most expensive means of transportation in
Melaka. But it's a good experience if you
want to try it out for fun. For the price will
be MYR 45+ per hour per trishaw. Here,
haggling is advised.

conclusion
This project help me further knowing my hometown, Malacca. In order to
produce this informative booklet, I have visited Malacca several times
even though I was born and raised in this city. There's still a lot of things
need to investigate carefully in order to get further details about this city.
Malacca is a small city, it is a very popular place to visit for tourists
because it has a significance historical background. Malacca has a
beautiful surrounding and it is full of unique architectures buildings as
Malacca was conquered by few different countries back then. Besides,
Malacca has different types of cultures that attracted me, especially the
Baba and Nyonya. Even though Malacca is a busy city , it does not have a
very complete and modern facilities, transportation and infrastructures etc.
Malacca does not have a efficient public transportation. Unlike KL and
Selangor which are full of public transport like KTM, Monorail, LRT, Buses,
KLIA Transit, BRT etc. Malacca does have public buses service, but it is
not efficient as people would have to go to the main transportation hub -
Malacca Sentral to catch a bus. Public buses in Malacca does not stop
everywhere , it only stops at few bus stops which is not convenient at all.
Besides, Malacca's taxi services are not affordable. Since all taxi in
Malacca are not metered, taxi fares could sometimes not reasonable, a
distance of 3km will simply takes u around RM15. Hence, haggling is
common in Malacca. Malacca need to improve the transportation system,
not only for Malaccan, but also for the international or local tourists. A
convenient transportation system will attract more peoples to visit , hence
Malacca can develop into a busy and better city like Kuala Lumpur.

11 Futuristic ideas for the future city
1. Graffiti-busting drones.
to deter grafitti artists who damage
the surroundings.
2. Robotic sewer rats.
uses a 360-degree camera and
lasers to inspect city sewers.
3. Pothole patrol.
the Street Bump app uses your
phone’s motion sensor and GPS to
report rough rides—and save your
shocks.
4. Smart spaces.
The Parker app uses cameras and in-
ground sensors to flag open spaces.
It also tells you when your time is up
so you don’t get a ticket.
5. Permeable pavement.
New paving surfaces let rainwater
through to the ground, lessening the
load on drainage systems and
restoring aquifers.
6. Talking trash cans
BigBelly Solar trash and
recycling bins ping HQ
when they need to be
emptied, enabling more
efficient route planning
7. Cool roofs
Reflective paint
bounces away the
sun, cooling buildings
and saving energy.
8. Air-purifying billboards
sucks in air, purifies it, and pumps it
out again, upping air quality for a
five-block radius.
9. Watchful lights
Motion-sensitive LEDs
measure things like
pollution or snowfall.
10. Self-watering parks
monitor soil moisture and
turn on the water only
when it’s dry.
11. Traffic monitors
It uses pattern analysis and
vehicle detectors in the road to
shift signal lights for speedier
flow.

Architecture Each city would be embedded in nature and have its own cultural and educational centers. Wright’s “larger villages” would contain only about 10,000 individuals. In every way, Broadacre was an alternative to the mega- city. Wright, an ardent individualist, also hated money, land rent and landlords, and above all, profit and bureaucracy. Individuals would be generalists and self-supporting, given the right by government to a one-acre piece of land, although some would have a one-car garage and some a five-car garage. • Architecture should be organic– blend with its environment. • “Usonian” houses should be easy to build. • Owners would be competent in many skills; self-sufficient • House could be built for $5,000. • 40. conclusion This project help me further knowing my hometown, Malacca. In order to produce this informative booklet, I have visited Malacca several times even though I was born and raised in this city. There's still a lot of things need to investigate carefully in order to get further details about this city. Malacca is a small city, it is a very popular place to visit for tourists because it has a significance historical background. Malacca has a beautiful surrounding and it is full of unique architectures buildings as Malacca was conquered by few different countries back then. Besides, Malacca has different types of cultures that attracted me, especially the Baba and Nyonya. Even though Malacca is a busy city , it does not have a very complete and modern facilities, transportation and infrastructures etc. Malacca does not have a efficient public transportation. Unlike KL and Selangor which are full of public transport like KTM, Monorail, LRT, Buses, KLIA Transit, BRT etc. Malacca does have public buses service, but it is not efficient as people would have to go to the main transportation hub - Malacca Sentral to catch a bus. Public buses in Malacca does not stop everywhere , it only stops at few bus stops which is not convenient at all. Besides, Malacca's taxi services are not affordable. Since all taxi in Malacca are not metered, taxi fares could sometimes not reasonable, a distance of 3km will simply takes u around RM15. Hence, haggling is common in Malacca. Malacca need to improve the transportation system, not only for Malaccan, but also for the international or local tourists. A convenient transportation system will attract more peoples to visit , hence Malacca can develop into a busy and better city like Kuala Lumpur. FINAL PROJECT | PART A | FNBE JULY 2015 | ENBE 40
