A+ Unit
Age Group- 8th
Grade Students
This is a block unit plan on basketball that will be taught to 8th
grade students that implements two
types of technology in order to provide feedback and different skills advice. Students are in Sports
Education Model throughout the Unit. The unit will last 2 weeks and includes 3 days of Game Play for
more Game like Situations to be evaluated, 2 assessment forms, and many days of technology usage
such as iPads and YouTube.
Unit Length- 2 Weeks
Equipment- Basketball (1 per student), Baskets, Cones, Colored Jerseys, and Whistles.
Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday
-Intro. of
basketball
rules for class,
skills for the
week, and
overview of
activities.
-Split class into
4 teams of 5 to
7 per team.
Have students
come up with
team name
and team
colors.
-Begin passing
skills.
-1st
pass- chest
pass
-2nd
pass-
bounce pass
-3rd
pass-
overhead pass
-Students will
access their
iPads while 1
of their
teammates
practices skill
with another
teammate.
-Review of
Mondays intro.
and of passing
skills.
-1 student
from your
team will be
asked to
present
another
teammates
video from
iPad to the rest
of the class
with proper
critiques for
team points.
Then student
who was
critiqued will
demonstrate
corrected way
to do skill for
class.
-Begin
dribbling skills.
-Students will
work on

both dominant
and non-

-1 student from
your team will be
asked to present
another
teammates video
from iPad to the
rest of the class
with proper
critiques for team
points. Then
student who was

on lay-ups on both
right and left hand
side. 1 teammate
will teach cues to
entire team.
-Before they begin
skill practice
students will be
asked to watch a
YouTube vide on
lay-ups. Video
-Review
Wednesday
lay-up skills.
-Have students
give feedback
on the video
they watched
before
practicing lay-
up skill.
Students will
complete lay-
up worksheet
in class.
-Students will
practice and
critique lay-up
skill of
teammates at
team station
while using the
iPad and
Coach’s Eye.
-1 student

team will be
asked to
present
another
teammates

-Game-Students within their
team will be asked to
demonstrate a chest pass to
a streaking runner towards
their team’s hoop who will
finish with a lay-up. Pass
completed and lay-up
made=2 points. Pass
completed and missed lay-
up=1 point. For 5 or 10
minutes have students
actively engage in activity.
Teams will add up points
and team with most points
will win competition.
-Introduction of jump shot.
-Students will work jump-
shot skill. Use of YouTube
video with proper jump-shot
skills. Video “How To: Shoot
A Perfect Jump Shot.” Link-

from the day or what can be changed from that class to help with students learning. Each post is worth 1
point for their team score.

Jump Shot Skill Assessment Form
Skill Cues:
Student stands inside of 3 point line with basketball.
Have your body squared to the hoop.
Bend your knees, and keep your feet shoulder width apart.
Make sure the thumb of your guide hand is pointing to the center of your forehead.
Jump straight up so that you land in the same spot as you started.
Jump as high as you can and put your legs together as you shoot.
Release the ball right before you reach the top of your jump, forcing the ball up and forward with one
hand only.
The ball should roll off your index finger last.
Directions: Teammate will evaluate your jump shot and circle on the scale the amount of skill cues you
demonstrated when performing the jump shot skill.

Basketball Skill/Class Assessment
1. Name the 4 main skills worked on during basketball unit.
2. Name the 3 different types of passes talked about in class and give 2 cues for each.
3. Name all the cues for dribbling.
4. Name 2 cues for the lay-up skill.
5. Name 2 cues for the jump shot skill.
6. List your teams name and team color.
7. List every teammate’s name that is on your team.
8. List 5 rules introduced at the beginning of the class.

Have your body squared to the hoop. Bend your knees, and keep your feet shoulder width apart. Make sure the thumb of your guide hand is pointing to the center of your forehead. Jump straight up so that you land in the same spot as you started. Jump as high as you can and put your legs together as you shoot. Release the ball right before you reach the top of your jump, forcing the ball up and forward with one hand only. The ball should roll off your index finger last.
