Islam and Muslims Islam  is an Arabic word which means ‘peace’ or ‘submission’. A  Muslim   is what we call someone who believes in Islam. Believe that the  Qur’an  is the newest revelation from God. Split into  sects , Sunni and Shia.

2 Sects in Islam Shi’a : Believed Ali should lead all Muslims. 120 million followers.

Christianity Those who follow the teachings of  Jesus  Christ are known as Christians.  Believe the  Bible  is a new revelation from God. Are divided into 3 major sects
3 Sects of Christianity Roman Catholic:   The Pope is God’s representative on Earth, and is  infallible .  1 billion followers.
3 Sects of Christianity Protestant:   Split from Catholic church during the 1500s.  Do not follow the Pope.  600 million followers.
3 Sects of Christianity Eastern Orthodox:   Split from Catholics in 1054.  Leaders are called Patriarchs.  300 million followers.
Judaism Oldest  monotheistic  religion. 14 million followers around the world. Holy book is the  Torah , which Christians call the Old Testament.
3 Divisions of Judaism: Orthodox Judaism:   Strict belief in the Old Testament.  Only allowed to marry other Orthodox Jews.  Conservative Judaism:   Less strict than Orthodox.  Women can become Rabbis.
3 Divisions of Judaism Reform Judaism:   Less emphasis on Jewish tradition. Believe Judaism must change with the times.
