St. Andrew's Catholic School is requesting permission from Surrey County Council to film at several locations in Surrey for an A-Level media production coursework project. The students will film a fictional soap opera trailer between 9am and 3:05pm on Tuesday and Wednesday November 14th at locations including St. Andrew's School, Park Rise, Grange Road, and nearby areas. They assure the council that filming will not disturb the public or damage the locations.
This document contains a script for a short film called "Walton Hill". It describes 23 scenes that establish the setting and introduce characters and conflicts through flashbacks. The scenes use music and visuals to show issues like drug use, lies, adultery, murder, fighting, and baking a "cake" representing the conflicts. At the end, there is a voiceover announcing the new soap opera and its time slot.
This document outlines various potential filming locations for a school media project and identifies potential hazards and risks at each location. It discusses filming establishing shots on Walton Road but notes the risk of traffic. It also mentions filming a discussion scene at a coffee shop called The Grey Dove after obtaining permission, but hot drinks could pose burn risks. Another scene of a drug addict's messy bedroom is proposed, but the untidy house may cause accidents. The document considers other locations like the school's food tech room for a baking scene, local woods for a flashback scene, various houses for indoor scenes, and a pond for establishing shots, outlining safety precautions for each.
This document provides a textual analysis of two soap opera trailers. For trailer one, the analysis highlights the use of sad instrumental music, hostile dialogue between characters, and scenes showing bullying and flirting. Settings, costumes, and facial expressions further depict tension and depression. Trailer two features dialogue about reducing a prison sentence, sinister music, and heart monitor sounds building suspense. Angry facial expressions and a cunning look contrast prison and court settings. Both trailers utilize techniques like camera angles, cuts, and shots to portray power dynamics and build tension between characters. The document evaluates strengths of each trailer, noting areas that could be repeated or exploited in new soap opera trailers.

This document provides a mind map and research for ideas for an ancillary product, a TV magazine front cover, for a media studies project. It includes potential magazine names, mastheads, headlines, images, and other design elements. Research was done on existing soap opera magazines to inform the design choices. The document concludes with next steps, such as procuring images and finalizing the font style, and notes the software that will be used to create the magazine cover.
This document outlines a plot for a multi-stranded narrative that explores the themes of adultery, conflict, lies, drugs, and murder. It considers using a love triangle as the central story and parodying the TV show "The Great British Bake Off" by having a woman make a cake with the themes as ingredients and showing the themes in flashbacks. It also considers recreating the trailer format of the TV show "EastEnders" but decides a bake off parody would be more original. It introduces five central characters involved in the different storylines.
This document contains emails between a student named Zakary Winsall, his school St. Andrew's Catholic School, and Reigate & Banstead Council regarding obtaining filming permission. The emails discuss Zakary requesting permission to film at a council building for his A2 media studies advanced portfolio coursework and the council granting permission with some restrictions.
This document analyzes features of three soap opera posters, including their taglines, images, logos, and social media integration. It discusses the connotations created by the manipulated fiery image in the Hollyoaks poster. It also likes the simple darkening of the background image in the student exemplar, which implies an eerie feeling. Features it would include in its own poster are a manipulated image connoting intense emotion, social media links to build awareness, and clear logos and air dates. It concludes by reflecting on useful features across the posters.
This document analyzes the cover of a soap opera magazine. It discusses several design elements used on the cover to attract readers' attention and build hype for upcoming episodes. These include a prominent date, red masthead, central images of characters involved in an advertised story, headlines using words like "bombshells" and "crash" to leave readers on a cliffhanger, and cover lines with images and text for additional stories. The analysis suggests these elements are intended to entice readers to learn more secrets and stories from their favorite soap operas in the magazine.
This document contains a prop list for a media production called "Walton Hill" created by a group of 4 students - Jonny Sheehan, Dan Sgarbini, Adam Fox, and Zak Winsall. The list includes a personalized cake with the Walton Hill logo sourced by Jonny, a coffee mug coffee shop set, phones for cast members, and various cameras, tripods, and baking equipment sourced from the school for food technology scenes. It also lists extras for the production.
This document summarizes the results of a survey about soap opera viewing habits. The survey found that 53% of respondents were male, most (54%) were ages 17 or under, and 54% do not regularly watch soap operas. The majority felt soap operas appeal more to females and that females are represented more than males. Respondents had varying views on what draws audiences to the genre and what they want to see in a new soap opera, though many cited drama, excitement, and cheating/affairs as appealing. Most respondents wanted to see a new soap opera and felt trailers would be the best way to market one.
The dominant female will select ingredients to make a cake, with each ingredient cutting to a different flashback story. Scenes will establish the kitchen setting. Once the cake is in the oven, it will be displayed on the table and then smashed by the dominant female, symbolizing the drama of the soap opera. Flashbacks will include scenes of drugs, adultery, murder, conflict, and lies.
The survey responses about the soap opera trailer were primarily from males ages 16-24, contradicting expectations that soap audiences are usually female. Most respondents liked the multi-stranded narrative in the trailer and high production quality. 80% said the trailer encouraged them to watch the show. While some found elements like the cake-making confusing, respondents recognized the multi-stranded narrative and camera techniques common in soap operas. Nearly all felt more positively about the show knowing the BBC was involved and thought the multiple storylines were obvious from the trailer. All agreed air time information was important to know when the show would be broadcast.
Soap operas typically target females ages 16 and older as the main audience. While males may also be drawn in to relate to tough male characters or watch with their families, soap operas primarily focus on domestic and family issues that appeal more to women. Research shows soap operas have a predominantly female target audience. The target socio-economic group is typically those in social grades B-D, as the issues addressed in soap operas reflect real-world struggles of working and middle classes.
Music Permission – Email provides evidence for a candidate's media studies portfolio. The evidence shows the candidate, Zakary Winsall with candidate number 2144 from St. Andrew's Catholic School with center number 64135, attempted to contact BMG to request permission to use music in their OCR Advanced Portfolio for Unit G324 but did not receive a response.
1. The storyboard introduces the setting of Walton Hill through establishing shots of a pond, benches, and streets to familiarize viewers with the area.
2. It then shows a poster for a "British Bake Off" special event before cutting to a recreated kitchen scene with a sinister glitch effect. Various "ingredients" like drugs, lies, adultery, and murder are taken from cupboards.
3. Flashback scenes depict characters taking drugs, covering up a murder, and adultery. The ingredients are baked into a cake which is then violently destroyed, with the Walton Hill logo revealed.
4. The trailer ends with a voiceover announcing the new soap's time and channel before fading
The students are requesting permission to use elements of the song "Till It's Gone" by Yelawolf in their A-Level Media Studies soap opera trailer. Their trailer can only be 45 seconds to 1 minute and 30 seconds. They will be editing the song using Adobe Premiere Pro CS6. Once completed, they will upload the trailer to YouTube and embed it into their educational blog for their exam board to assess interactively.
The document contains meeting notes from 18 meetings of a student production group creating a trailer for a soap opera. Key details include:
- The group initially decided on a drama series called "The Life of Lord Sgarbini" but later changed the plot to a drug addiction storyline.
- Locations were discussed including filming scenes in an alleyway, coffee shop, and near a pond.
- Props, costumes, and permissions were arranged. Storyboards and timelines were created.
- Filming took place over multiple dates but some scenes required re-shoots due to issues.
- Meetings involved reflecting on progress, arranging additional filming, and discussing editing and special effects.
The document summarizes audience feedback from a survey about ancillary products for a soap opera called "Walton Hill". The majority of respondents were younger males, which contradicts earlier findings that soap opera audiences are primarily female. Most respondents said promotional magazine covers and posters for "Walton Hill" would encourage them to watch the show. Features like bright colors, character expressions and headlines were well-liked. Most also felt positively about the BBC's involvement in producing the show. Established soaps featured on the magazine covers were seen as appealing. Opinions were mixed on potential issues with the show's primetime airing slot. The magazine design was seen as most similar to "What's On TV". Views were also mixed on whether

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
