Here is our calendar of current and upcoming wine and food-related events for 2012.
It may be updated at any time, so watch this space…. (Click on the bold highlights to
access websites for more information). We have separate lists of restaurant special
offers and wine farms which offer picnics, which are updated as we receive them from
the restaurants, farms or their PR agencies. Click on the underlined, bold words
above to access them. Not all the events are in the Western Cape and we are,
occasionally, told about events in Johannesburg, London, and other cities and towns.
UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE:
until 15th July 2012. ART EXHIBITION: Wings of the Shechinah - The Sculptural Art of
Herman Wald, SA Jewish Museum, 88 Hatfield Street Gardens Cape Town. Sunday to
Thursday 10am to 5pm, Friday 10am to 2pm. Sculptures, Sketches, Writings and Audio
Visual Displays. A major South African artist, Herman Wald is currently having his biggest
exhibition in Cape Town, forty two years after his death and the digital-age
retrospective breaks new grounds in the Arts market, offering online global access to the
entire collection and its catalogue. The Wings of the Shechinah - The Sculptural Art of
Herman Wald is on exhibit at the South African Jewish Museum, Cape Town until 15 July
2012. On show are almost 60 sculptures, more than 40 sketches, writings and audio
visual displays. Gallery hours are Sunday to Thursday 10am to 5pm and Fridays 10am to
2pm. Sculptor Herman Wald would have approved of the bold initiative, said his son
Louis Wald who was only twelve years old when his father died, leaving a legacy of over
650 castings of his works but little money to sustain his family in Johannesburg.
Hungarian-born, Herman Wald the son of a Rabbi, challenged the Orthodox Jewish
restriction against carved images of the human form. After studying, doing
apprenticeships and working in Budapest, Vienna, Berlin, Paris and London he moved to
South Africa in 1937 to escape the persecutions of the Nazi era and established his
studio in Johannesburg. The death of his mother and her family in a concentration camp
during the Second World War motivated him to produce a series of public works which
confirmed his standing in the Arts world. The first, entitled Symbol for Chaos and Hope,
and known as Kria, is the rendering of garments and a symbol of Jewish mourning,
originating from biblical days and still practiced today. Admission Fees to the Museum
and exhibition are: Adults R 40, South African Pensioners and students R25, Children
under 16 years of age free. Valid Identification Required. The Museum caters for group
tours by prior arrangement.

of Bastille Month. The Vineyard Hotel & Spa launched its Tastes of 2012 earlier this year,
which features a different themed dish every month. “With Bastille Day taking place in

pear and almond Clafoutis served with blueberry and lavender ice cream.” The classic
French options will be available seven days a week on the a la carte menu, and daily
specials will also be added to the menu to ensure a vibrant dining experience. Recipes
for each themed dish included on the menu have been published on
www.vineyard.co.za to enable guests to try them at home. “This has been extremely
well received by our guests,” says Law. “Being able to share our recipes brings an

Friday, 13th July. Muratie wine Estate paired dinner at the Vineyard Hotel & Spa.
Roy Davies, General Manager of the Vineyard explains, “We will host two wine-paired
dinner events each month, where winemakers from farms such as Muratie will have the
opportunity to present their wines. To avoid disappointment, guests are encouraged to
book well in advance for the dinners, as they are extremely popular with both local and
resident guests,” says Davies. “Diners can enjoy live light entertainment throughout the
evening, and lucky draws are held at each event to add to the experience. So whether
you are looking for a romantic evening out, or a night spent with a group of friends – the
experience is bound to be a memorable one.” Each wine-paired dinner is either four- or
five-course, depending on the wines served. “Ahead of each event we conduct a tasting
where The Square‟s sous chef, the winemaker and select members of the media as well
as the hotels food and wine committee get together. It‟s an opportunity to taste the
wines and to debate, deliberate and explore a menu specifically paired to the wines in
question,” Davies explained. “The combination of the tasting session and then
experiencing the end product – the actual dinner – is a fascinating journey, allowing us
to ensure that the end-product is always of the absolute highest standard, something we
believe our guests will experience with every paired event.” The cost of the dinners is
R315 pp for the five-course. For those guests who‟d like to make a night of it, the
Vineyard Hotel & Spa is offering a special rate which includes the four-course wine
paired dinner, accommodation and breakfast the following morning. Single rooms are

Saturday, 14th & Sunday, 15th July. The Franschhoek Wine Valley, South Africa‟s
leading wine and food destination, will once again be hosting the annual Bastille
Festival over the weekend of the 14th and 15th July, where locals and visitors will be
celebrating the Valley‟s centuries-old French Huguenot heritage. In keeping with its
French heritage the Franschhoek Wine Valley has officially been accredited to be part of
an exciting collaboration between France and South Africa, the SA-French Seasons 2012-
13. This multifaceted bilateral agreement was concluded last year between the heads
of state of these two countries, and will commence this winter as the first French
Season in South Africa kicks off. The French Season in South Africa will commence
formally in July and continue into November. This initiative reinforces the strong, deep
bonds that unite the two countries in the fields of arts and culture, gastronomy, and
sport amongst others. It aims to discover new facets of this relationship, while forging
long term ties. Furthermore, the collaboration has allowed the Bastille Festival event
organisers the perfect opportunity to take this social calendar highlight to a new level.
Visitors to the festival will have the chance to meet 10 winemakers from the Rhône-
Alpes Region in France, who will be showcasing some of their finest wines. These French
wines will be available for tasting at two wine tastings organized specifically for
members of the public, as well as in a specially demarcated VIP marquee, adjacent to
the main marquee during the festival. The French winemakers making an appearance
include: Gilles Barge (Domaine Barge, Cote Rotie, Condrieu), Jean Luc Monteillet
(Domaine De Montine, Grignan Les Adhemar, Cotes Du Rhone, Vinsobres), Gilles Verzier
(Vignobles Verzier, Chanteperdrix, Cote Rotie, Condrieu, Saint Joseph), Nadia Fayolle
(Domaine Des Martinelles, Crozes Hermitage, Hermitage), Yves Cuilleron (Cave
Cuilleron, Cote Rotie, Condrieu), André Mercier (Vignerons Ardechois, Vins D' Ardeche,
Cotes Du Rhone, Cotes Du Vivarais), Dominique Courbis, (St Joseph, Cornas), Yann Chave
(Domaine Yann Chave, Crozes Hermitage, Hermitage), Pierre Mollier, Mas De Bagnols
(Ardeche, Cotes Du Vivarais), Laurent Vial, Domaine Du Colombier (Crozes Hermitage,
Hermitage).
The public tastings, which will include Rhône-Alpes wines alongside a selection of
Vignerons de Franschhoek wines, will take place on Saturday and Sunday at Grande
Provence at a cost of R395 per person. Booking is essential as seating is limited to 100
people. Tickets to this „once in a blue moon‟ opportunity also include access to the
Bastille Food and Wine Marquee, valued at R150 per person.
Tickets to the VIP marquee cost R395 per person and includes a tasting of the French
wines as well as a selection of Vignerons de Franschhoek wines and a delicious platter of
French inspired food. This ticket will also allow you access to the Food and Wine
Marquee, valued at R150 per person. Visitors can also look forward to special public
tastings presented by these winemakers, which will be held on Saturday and Sunday
morning. Refer to the website for more details. The Food and Wine Marquee, which will
be located closer to the village this year, is open from 12pm until 5pm, and as always is
the focal point of attracting visitors to the hub of activity. Taking a leisurely stroll,
festival goers will be treated to a selection of stalls and activities as they make their
way to the marquee. A popular meeting place, the marquee allows visitors the chance to
meet up with friends while enjoying fine wines from some of Franschhoek‟s award-
winning wine estates, and indulge in mouth-watering dishes created by the Valley‟s
highly acclaimed chefs.
An R150 per person entrance fee allows you access to the Bastille Food and Wine
Marquee, which includes a tasting glass and a complimentary booklet of tasting
coupons. Thereafter all tastings will be charged on consumption. Not forgetting other
major festival attractions, which include boules - the largest and longest running boules
competition of its kind, The Waiters‟ Race, the Franschhoek minstrel parade, as well as
the popular barrel-rolling contest. A farmers‟ market, craft market stalls, musicians and
children‟s activities are also included in the line up of festival celebrations. Visitors to
Marche de Franschhoek, located in the Town Hall, can look forward to an array of
French and French inspired food and lifestyle products. For those wanting to appreciate
French heritage in comfort, the Screening Room at Le Quartier Français will be screening
French movies throughout the weekend. Franschhoek‟s award-winning restaurants will
also be offering special menus exclusively prepared for the festival. Turn this social
calendar highlight into a weekend of discovery. Book into one of the town‟s luxuriously
quaint, yet affordable B&B‟s or guest houses, and discover all that Franschhoek has to
offer. This should also allow you ample time for a leisurely stroll down the main road,
uncovering world-class shops and boutiques, allowing for an intimate and relaxed
shopping experience. What better way to paint the town red, white and blue. Not
forgetting, it‟s the only time of the year you‟ll be forgiven for wearing a beret. Tickets
to the Food and Wine Marquee, VIP area, as well as the public wine tasting can be
purchased directly from www.webtickets.co.za. Booking is essential as tickets to the
marquees are limited. Once the venues are full no further patrons will be admitted. For

the opportunity to present their wines. To avoid disappointment, guests are encouraged
to book well in advance for the dinners, as they are extremely popular with both local
and resident guests,” says Davies. “Diners can enjoy live light entertainment throughout
the evening, and lucky draws are held at each event to add to the experience. So
whether you are looking for a romantic evening out, or a night spent with a group of
friends – the experience is bound to be a memorable one.” Each wine-paired dinner is
either four- or five-course, depending on the wines served. “Ahead of each event we
conduct a tasting where The Square‟s sous chef, the winemaker and select members of
the media as well as the hotels food and wine committee get together. It‟s an
opportunity to taste the wines and to debate, deliberate and explore a menu specifically
paired to the wines in question,” Davies explained. “The combination of the tasting
session and then experiencing the end product – the actual dinner – is a fascinating
journey, allowing us to ensure that the end-product is always of the absolute highest
standard, something we believe our guests will experience with every paired event.”
The cost of the dinners is R265 pp for the four-course and R315 pp for the five-course.
Davies and his team have also put together exclusive stay-over packages that include the
dinner for guests attending the events. For the five-course dinner, a single room is
R950, while a double room is R800 per person sharing. For the four-course paired dinner,
a single room is R900 and a double room is R750 per person sharing. For more

SEPTEMBER
Saturday, 1st and Sunday, 2nd September Telkom Business Michael Fridjhon Wine
Experience at The Hyatt Regency, 191 Oxford Road, Rosebank, Johannesburg. Times:
Saturday Benchmark Tasting, 18h30 for 19h00 sharp start, followed by the Gala Dinner
(20h30 onwards) in the Ballroom. Dress: Cocktail wear, jacket and tie. Sunday
Champagne Brunch: Registration from 10h15 for 10h30 sharp start. Brunch ends around
13h30. Dress: Elegantly Casual Spring.
The subject is “The Glory of Old Wines” and it promises an array of vinous rarities the
likes of which we may never see again. For some time now I have been collecting select
examples from the world's leading appellations, hoping that in the end we would have
enough mature great wine to illustrate the proposition. The Michael Fridjhon Wine
Experience was conceived as an annual event which would establish benchmarks for
wine enthusiasts seeking extraordinary encounters with great wines. Over the years we
have been lucky enough to source once-in-a-lifetime bottles which have not only
illustrated the theme of the weekend, but raised the stakes for all of us who love and
respect fine wine. Some of the wines that have been secured for the keynote tasting,
and the dinner which follows include First Growths from the Left Bank (Mouton
Rothschild 1975) and Right Bank (Chateau Cheval Blanc 1970), White Burgundy (Beaune
Clos des Mouches 1995) and Red Burgundy (Bonnes Mares Grand Cru 1990), Krug 1995 and
a German Beerenauslese, the 1945 Niersteiner Friztenholler. The dinner will begin with
a Corton Charlemagne 2000 (served from the Jeroboam), then magnums of Segla 1989,
followed by magnums of Chateau Haut Batailley 1983. The dessert wine will be a 1979
Kiedricher Graf Eiswein, a breathtakingly beautiful example of a wine which can only be
made by crushing frost-frozen grapes before they have thawed. Chef Taner Erdamir from
the Hyatt Regency Johannesburg has designed a menu which combines innovation and
tradition to complement this year's line-up. Champagne for the Saturday events are
the Bollinger Special Cuvée and the 1997 Bollinger Grande Année (from the Jeroboam).
For the Champagne brunch the next day, we will be showing the prestige cuvées from
Billecart-Salmon (the Elisabeth Salmon 2000) and Pommery (the Cuvée Louise 1999) with
the degustation canapés, while the non-vintage Billecart-Salmon Rosé and Pommery will
accompany the brunch. It goes without saying that volumes of truly old wines are
virtually non-existent and so we have had to cut back on the number of places we are
able to offer. Notwithstanding the rarity of this year's selection we have done our best
to keep the cost of attending the weekend in line with last year. Allowing for an
inflation-related increase, as well as an adjustment for the Rand-Euro rate, this has
come in at 9%. In an endeavour to ameliorate this, we are able to offer a complimentary
bottle of 2004 Champagne Louis Roederer Cristal (worth R3000) for every couple booking
at the full rate before the Early Bird cut-off date. (This would be in lieu of the Early Bird
discount of R750 per person). We have also again arranged to include in the weekend
rate, complimentary overnight accommodation at the Hyatt Regency on a per-couple
basis (single supplement available on request) for the Saturday. We hope you can join us
at the 16th Wine Experience. Cost : Early Bird package (book and pay in full by
Friday 20th July) R6 500; thereafter full weekend package R7 250. Rate is per person
and includes VAT. Rate includes overnight accommodation for a twin/double room at the
Hyatt Regency on Saturday 1 September. Single supplement of R500 applies. Couples
booking at the Full Weekend Package rate by Friday 20th July will receive a
complimentary bottle of Champagne Louis Roederer Cristal 2004.

Friday, 5th October. Haut Espoir Wines paired dinner at the Vineyard Hotel & Spa.
Roy Davies, General Manager of the Vineyard explains, “We will host two wine-paired
dinner events each month, where winemakers from farms such as Haut Espoir will have
the opportunity to present their wines.
For more

Main Ingredient's 2012 Events Calendar updated

  • 1. Here is our calendar of current and upcoming wine and food-related events for 2012. It may be updated at any time, so watch this space…. (Click on the bold highlights to access websites for more information). We have separate lists of restaurant special offers and wine farms which offer picnics, which are updated as we receive them from the restaurants, farms or their PR agencies. Click on the underlined, bold words above to access them. Not all the events are in the Western Cape and we are, occasionally, told about events in Johannesburg, London, and other cities and towns. UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE: until 15th July 2012. ART EXHIBITION: Wings of the Shechinah - The Sculptural Art of Herman Wald, SA Jewish Museum, 88 Hatfield Street Gardens Cape Town. Sunday to Thursday 10am to 5pm, Friday 10am to 2pm. Sculptures, Sketches, Writings and Audio Visual Displays. A major South African artist, Herman Wald is currently having his biggest exhibition in Cape Town, forty two years after his death and the digital-age retrospective breaks new grounds in the Arts market, offering online global access to the entire collection and its catalogue. The Wings of the Shechinah - The Sculptural Art of Herman Wald is on exhibit at the South African Jewish Museum, Cape Town until 15 July 2012. On show are almost 60 sculptures, more than 40 sketches, writings and audio visual displays. Gallery hours are Sunday to Thursday 10am to 5pm and Fridays 10am to 2pm. Sculptor Herman Wald would have approved of the bold initiative, said his son Louis Wald who was only twelve years old when his father died, leaving a legacy of over 650 castings of his works but little money to sustain his family in Johannesburg. Hungarian-born, Herman Wald the son of a Rabbi, challenged the Orthodox Jewish restriction against carved images of the human form. After studying, doing apprenticeships and working in Budapest, Vienna, Berlin, Paris and London he moved to South Africa in 1937 to escape the persecutions of the Nazi era and established his studio in Johannesburg. The death of his mother and her family in a concentration camp during the Second World War motivated him to produce a series of public works which confirmed his standing in the Arts world. The first, entitled Symbol for Chaos and Hope, and known as Kria, is the rendering of garments and a symbol of Jewish mourning, originating from biblical days and still practiced today. Admission Fees to the Museum and exhibition are: Adults R 40, South African Pensioners and students R25, Children under 16 years of age free. Valid Identification Required. The Museum caters for group tours by prior arrangement. LIVE MUSIC AT HARVEST Kick start your weekend with a chilled glass of wine or bubbly at Harvest at Laborie Wine Farm in Paarl whilst enjoying the live music on offer every Friday, between 5pm and 8pm. So whether you are looking for a romantic evening out, or a night spent with a group of friends – the experience is bound to be a memorable one.” Each wine-paired dinner is either four- or five-course, depending on the wines served. “Ahead of each event we conduct a tasting where The Square‟s sous chef, the winemaker and select members of the media as well as the hotels food and wine committee get together. The Franschhoek Wine Valley, South Africa‟s leading wine and food destination, will once again be hosting the annual Bastille Festival over the weekend of the 14th and 15th July, where locals and visitors will be celebrating the Valley‟s centuries-old French Huguenot heritage. In keeping with its French heritage the Franschhoek Wine Valley has officially been accredited to be part of an exciting collaboration between France and South Africa, the SA-French Seasons 2012- 13. This multifaceted bilateral agreement was concluded last year between the heads of state of these two countries, and will commence this winter as the first French Season in South Africa kicks off. The French Season in South Africa will commence formally in July and continue into November. This initiative reinforces the strong, deep bonds that unite the two countries in the fields of arts and culture, gastronomy, and sport amongst others. It aims to discover new facets of this relationship, while forging long term ties. Furthermore, the collaboration has allowed the Bastille Festival event organisers the perfect opportunity to take this social calendar highlight to a new level. Visitors to the festival will have the chance to meet 10 winemakers from the Rhône- Alpes Region in France, who will be showcasing some of their finest wines. These French wines will be available for tasting at two wine tastings organized specifically for members of the public, as well as in a specially demarcated VIP marquee, adjacent to the main marquee during the festival. The French winemakers making an appearance include: Gilles Barge (Domaine Barge, Cote Rotie, Condrieu), Jean Luc Monteillet (Domaine De Montine, Grignan Les Adhemar, Cotes Du Rhone, Vinsobres), Gilles Verzier (Vignobles Verzier, Chanteperdrix, Cote Rotie, Condrieu, Saint Joseph), Nadia Fayolle (Domaine Des Martinelles, Crozes Hermitage, Hermitage), Yves Cuilleron (Cave Cuilleron, Cote Rotie, Condrieu), André Mercier (Vignerons Ardechois, Vins D' Ardeche, Cotes Du Rhone, Cotes Du Vivarais), Dominique Courbis, (St Joseph, Cornas), Yann Chave (Domaine Yann Chave, Crozes Hermitage, Hermitage), Pierre Mollier, Mas De Bagnols (Ardeche, Cotes Du Vivarais), Laurent Vial, Domaine Du Colombier (Crozes Hermitage, Hermitage). The public tastings, which will include Rhône-Alpes wines alongside a selection of Vignerons de Franschhoek wines, will take place on Saturday and Sunday at Grande Provence at a cost of R395 per person. Booking is essential as seating is limited to 100 people. Tickets to this „once in a blue moon‟ opportunity also include access to the Bastille Food and Wine Marquee, valued at R150 per person. Visitors can also look forward to special public tastings presented by these winemakers, which will be held on Saturday and Sunday morning. Refer to the website for more details. The Food and Wine Marquee, which will be located closer to the village this year, is open from 12pm until 5pm, and as always is the focal point of attracting visitors to the hub of activity. Taking a leisurely stroll, festival goers will be treated to a selection of stalls and activities as they make their way to the marquee. A popular meeting place, the marquee allows visitors the chance to meet up with friends while enjoying fine wines from some of Franschhoek‟s award- winning wine estates, and indulge in mouth-watering dishes created by the Valley‟s highly acclaimed chefs. An R150 per person entrance fee allows you access to the Bastille Food and Wine Marquee, which includes a tasting glass and a complimentary booklet of tasting coupons. Thereafter all tastings will be charged on consumption. Not forgetting other major festival attractions, which include boules - the largest and longest running boules
  • 4. competition of its kind, The Waiters‟ Race, the Franschhoek minstrel parade, as well as the popular barrel-rolling contest. A farmers‟ market, craft market stalls, musicians and children‟s activities are also included in the line up of festival celebrations. Visitors to Marche de Franschhoek, located in the Town Hall, can look forward to an array of French and French inspired food and lifestyle products. For those wanting to appreciate French heritage in comfort, the Screening Room at Le Quartier Français will be screening French movies throughout the weekend. Franschhoek‟s award-winning restaurants will also be offering special menus exclusively prepared for the festival. Turn this social calendar highlight into a weekend of discovery. Book into one of the town‟s luxuriously quaint, yet affordable B&B‟s or guest houses, and discover all that Franschhoek has to offer. This should also allow you ample time for a leisurely stroll down the main road, uncovering world-class shops and boutiques, allowing for an intimate and relaxed shopping experience. What better way to paint the town red, white and blue. Not forgetting, it‟s the only time of the year you‟ll be forgiven for wearing a beret. Roy Davies, General Manager of the Vineyard explains, “We will host two wine-paired dinner events each month, where winemakers from farms such as Oldenburg will have the opportunity to present their wines. To avoid disappointment, guests are encouraged to book well in advance for the dinners, as they are extremely popular with both local and resident guests,” says Davies. “Diners can enjoy live light entertainment throughout the evening, and lucky draws are held at each event to add to the experience. It‟s an opportunity to taste the wines and to debate, deliberate and explore a menu specifically paired to the wines in question,” Davies explained. “The combination of the tasting session and then experiencing the end product – the actual dinner – is a fascinating journey, allowing us to ensure that the end-product is always of the absolute highest standard, something we believe our guests will experience with every paired event.” The cost of the dinners is R265 pp for the four-course and R315 pp for the five-course. • 11. Friday, 31st August at 19h00. The Mount Nelson Wine & Dine Series of wine and food pairing dinners in the Planet Restaurant (subject to change). Executive Chef Rudi Liebenberg and Sommelier Carl Habel have teamed up with some of the most talented winemakers in South Africa to create the Wine & Dine Series. At each event we will sample wines produced in the same region and which share the same type of soil, weather conditions, grapes and wine-making savoir-faire. Grape - Pinot Noir: Catherine Marshall Wines – Catherine Marshall, Vriesenhof – Jan Boland Coetzee, Haute Cabrière – Christiane Von Arnim. Each evening starts at 19h00 with pre-dinner drinks around the Lord Kitchener Fountain, followed by an introduction to the menu by the chef and an overview of the wines that will be served by the sommelier and winemakers. Cost: R395 per person which includes a seven-course dinner with matching wines. These evenings are very popular, reservations are strongly encouraged. To book or to find out how you can combine a Wine & Dine evening with a luxurious stay at the hotel, contact +27 21 483 1948 SEPTEMBER Saturday, 1st and Sunday, 2nd September Telkom Business Michael Fridjhon Wine Experience at The Hyatt Regency, 191 Oxford Road, Rosebank, Johannesburg. Times: Saturday Benchmark Tasting, 18h30 for 19h00 sharp start, followed by the Gala Dinner (20h30 onwards) in the Ballroom. Dress: Cocktail wear, jacket and tie. Sunday Champagne Brunch: Registration from 10h15 for 10h30 sharp start. Brunch ends around 13h30. Dress: Elegantly Casual Spring. The subject is “The Glory of Old Wines” and it promises an array of vinous rarities the likes of which we may never see again. For some time now I have been collecting select examples from the world's leading appellations, hoping that in the end we would have enough mature great wine to illustrate the proposition. The Michael Fridjhon Wine Experience was conceived as an annual event which would establish benchmarks for wine enthusiasts seeking extraordinary encounters with great wines. Over the years we have been lucky enough to source once-in-a-lifetime bottles which have not only illustrated the theme of the weekend, but raised the stakes for all of us who love and respect fine wine. Some of the wines that have been secured for the keynote tasting, and the dinner which follows include First Growths from the Left Bank (Mouton Rothschild 1975) and Right Bank (Chateau Cheval Blanc 1970), White Burgundy (Beaune Clos des Mouches 1995) and Red Burgundy (Bonnes Mares Grand Cru 1990), Krug 1995 and a German Beerenauslese, the 1945 Niersteiner Friztenholler. The dinner will begin with a Corton Charlemagne 2000 (served from the Jeroboam), then magnums of Segla 1989, followed by magnums of Chateau Haut Batailley 1983. The dessert wine will be a 1979 Kiedricher Graf Eiswein, a breathtakingly beautiful example of a wine which can only be made by crushing frost-frozen grapes before they have thawed. Chef Taner Erdamir from the Hyatt Regency Johannesburg has designed a menu which combines innovation and tradition to complement this year's line-up. Champagne for the Saturday events are the Bollinger Special Cuvée and the 1997 Bollinger Grande Année (from the Jeroboam). For the Champagne brunch the next day, we will be showing the prestige cuvées from Billecart-Salmon (the Elisabeth Salmon 2000) and Pommery (the Cuvée Louise 1999) with the degustation canapés, while the non-vintage Billecart-Salmon Rosé and Pommery will accompany the brunch. It goes without saying that volumes of truly old wines are virtually non-existent and so we have had to cut back on the number of places we are able to offer. Notwithstanding the rarity of this year's selection we have done our best to keep the cost of attending the weekend in line with last year. Allowing for an inflation-related increase, as well as an adjustment for the Rand-Euro rate, this has come in at 9%. In an endeavour to ameliorate this, we are able to offer a complimentary bottle of 2004 Champagne Louis Roederer Cristal (worth R3000) for every couple booking at the full rate before the Early Bird cut-off date. (This would be in lieu of the Early Bird discount of R750 per person). We have also again arranged to include in the weekend rate, complimentary overnight accommodation at the Hyatt Regency on a per-couple basis (single supplement available on request) for the Saturday. We hope you can join us

Roy Davies, General Manager of the Vineyard explains, “We will host two wine-paired dinner events each month, where winemakers from farms such as Haut Espoir will have the opportunity to present their wines. To avoid disappointment, guests are encouraged to book well in advance for the dinners, as they are extremely popular with both local and resident guests,” says Davies. “Diners can enjoy live light entertainment throughout the evening, and lucky draws are held at each event to add to the experience. Davies and his team have also put together exclusive stay-over packages that include the dinner for guests attending the events. For the five-course dinner, a single room is R950, while a double room is R800 per person sharing.
