4. Can leaders be made?
BUT HOW?
An embracing the qualities that made them great leaders
Yes leader can be made.
5. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, popularly
known as Mahatma Gandhi was a major political
and spiritual leader of India.
He led his country in the non-
cooperation movements in 1922, the
Salt March in 1930 and later, in 1942,
in the Quit India movement, during
the struggle for independence.
BIOGRAPHY
6. Born in Porbandar, a town in Gujarat, Western India on 2nd October
1869, in a Hindu family.
At the age of 13, he was married to one year older Kasturba, his wife.
On 4th September 1888, he traveled to England to study law at the
University College London and to train as a barrister, what his family
wanted him to be.
7. Lets study the life of such a great leader and see what lessons could be learnt
Gandhi is considered as one of the most influential leaders. Without any official
position, power or money, from humble beginnings he gained world
prominence, helped achieve freedom and left a lasting legacy for us all. Many of
Gandhi’s core principles are remarkably relevant in the real of leadership
competencies and self-development
Lord Mountbatten, the last viceroy of British India remarked about his stature
and charismatic personality as ‘one-man boundary force’
8. Lesson 1: Continuous learning and improvement
Gandhi always told that if two of his sentences
contradicted each other, please accept the second
one and forget the first one. This reflects –
learning and growth mindset
anticipation of follower’s needs
rigid consistency was NOT one of his traits
9. Lesson 2: Looking at each person just as a human being
“Be quick, be brief, be gone!” Personal meetings with
Gandhi were very short. However Gandhi made
people feel as if they were the only person in the
world that Gandhi would have liked to talk at that
time
10. Lesson 3: Being an excellent listener
Gandhi was not a good orator, but people followed
him because he practiced the principles of truth and
non-violence in his life first and proved that any
ordinary man can follow his path of truth and non-
violence and then inspired others to follow these
principles
11. Lesson 4: Proactively identifying barriers to make sustainable change
Once a journalist asked Gandhi what was the biggest
problem that India faced? He expected Gandhi to
say slavery or British rule or pervasive poverty. But
Gandhi said it was “callousness of intellectuals” .
Gandhi had a long term vision of building a
sustainable society and not just getting
independence
12. Lesson 5: Being the conscience keeper
Non cooperation was one of the key political
movements that Gandhi initiated. Gandhi aborted the
movement saying a key tenet of the movement –
non-violence, was violated. He believed that the end
did not justify the means.
13. Lesson 6: Emphasis on self-awareness and discipline
As you grow in self awareness, you will better
understand why you feel what you feel and why you
behave as you behave. Self discipline is the training
of your mind to control, perceived harmful, urges until
a satisfactory solution has been sought
14. Lesson 7: Balancing value-driven vision and execution efficiency
A leader with vision has a clear, vivid picture of
where to go, and a firm grip on what success looks
like and how to achieve it. Leader must share the
vision and act upon it. He must communicate it
clearly and passionately.
15. Lesson 8: Emphasis on path and result
Mahatma Gandhi was a great leader. He had chosen
the path of non-violence for himself and his followers.
16. Lesson 9: Adopting a holistic perspective in every endeavor
Gandhi’s approach had always been holistic as
human life is a synthetic whole, which cannot be
divided into watertight compartments of social,
political, religious life, etc. He is in favor of a non-
violent and more civilized life style
17. Lesson 10: Be open-minded
Always keep things in perspective. Do not dismiss
other or anything- big or small- without giving a try.
We never know where the next useful idea might
come from.
18. Lesson 11: Primus Inter Pares; What I practice is what I preach
An enduring leader is not a superior person, but only
first among equals; first to abide by the moral code of
conduct; first to bear the brunt of change; first to
surrender privileges, and first to sacrifice one’s life. A
leader is elected, chosen to serve and not installed to
rule.
19. Lesson 12: Grass-root level contacts
A leader has to see that not many layers of
hierarchies are created between him or her and the
people at the lowest rung; and the people’s voice
does not go unheard and doesn’t get distorted to the
extent of even belying the truth
20. "Nobody can
hurt me
without my
permission."
As you realize that no-one outside of yourself can actually control how you feel you can
start to incorporate this thinking into your daily life and develop it as a thought habit. A
habit that you can grow stronger and stronger over time. Doing this makes life a whole
lot easier and more pleasurable.
Lesson 13: You are in control
21. "The weak can never
forgive. Forgiveness is
the attribute of the
strong."
Fighting evil with evil won't help anyone. If you don't forgive then you let
the past and another person to control how you feel. By forgiving you
release yourself from those bonds. And then you can focus totally on,
for instance, the next point.
Lesson 14: Forgive and let it go
22. "."
It is unwise to be too
sure of one's own
wisdom. It is healthy
to be reminded that
the strongest might
weaken and the wisest
might err
So it's important to keep in mind that everyone is just a human being no matter who they are.
We
are all human and prone to make mistakes. Holding people to unreasonable standards will only
create more unnecessary conflicts in your world and negativity within you
Lesson 15: Everyone is human
23. "Happiness is when
what you think, what
you say, and what you
do are in harmony”
People seem to really like authentic communication. And there is much inner enjoyment to be
found when your thoughts, words and actions are aligned. You feel powerful and good about
yourself. Also, if your actions aren't in alignment with what you're communicating then you
start to hurt your own belief in what you can do. And other people's belief in you too.
Lesson 16: Be congruent, be authentic, be your True Self
24. "Constant development is
the law of life, and a man
who always tries to maintain
his dogmas in order to
appear consistent drives
himself into a false position."
You can pretty much always improve your skills, habits or re-evaluate your evaluations. As
Gandhi says, drive yourself into a false position. A place where you try to uphold or cling to your
old views to appear consistent while you realize within that something is wrong.
To choose to grow and evolve is a happier and more useful path to take.
Lesson 17: . Continue to grow and evolve
25. "I do not want to foresee the future. I
am concerned with taking care of the
present. God has given me no control
over the moment following."
When you are in the present moment you don't worry about the next moment that you can't
control anyway. And so it becomes easier to both take action and to keep your focus on
this moment and perform better.
Lesson 18: Take care of this moment
26. If you change yourself you will change your world. If you change how you think then you will change
how you feel and what actions you take. And so the world around you will change. The change within can
allow you to take action in ways you wouldn't have - or maybe even have thought about - while
stuck in your old thought patterns.
Lesson 19: Change yourself
27. Lesson 20 Honesty
Gandhi, as a child, during the time of
inspection in the school, when his teacher
helped him to copy the answers, proved
his mettle by plainly rejecting the offer.
This little incident tells us that, even at the
early age, external image or opinion didn’t
matter him much. He did have a strong
value system and inbuilt convictions in
him.
28. Lesson 21 -Selfless
Selfless: Going through the life of Gandhi,
I feel more and more convinced that he
was not a self centered person. Even
when the whole nation was rejoicing, at
the independence,, he spent time in a far
way place alone. The praise, the slogans,
the honour, did not matter him much. He
was clear about his way and his goals.
29. Lesson 22-Relationships
• Gandhi established a clear relationship with people by
touring across india, leading all the major movements
personally and by holding various public meetings
repeatedly. In this way he alwaysmanaged to be
accessible to others, just a glimpse of Gandhi was
enough for a common man tobe connected to this great
leader.
