René Magritte was a Belgian surrealist artist born in 1898 in Lessines, Belgium and died in 1967 in Brussels. He began drawing lessons at age 12 and his early works were impressionistic and cubist in style. His painting "The Treachery of Images" from 1929, which shows a pipe with the words "Ceci n'est pas une pipe" is perhaps his most famous work. The document then discusses his 1952 painting "Personal Values" which is in the style of surrealism and housed at the SFMOMA.
