Ferdinand Magellan was a Portuguese navigator and explorer who led a maritime expedition in the 16th century that discovered the Strait of Magellan, numerous Pacific islands including the Philippines, and sought a western commercial route to the Spice Islands. Magellan's expedition was the first to circumnavigate the globe, though Magellan did not complete the entire voyage as he was killed in the Philippines.
