Ferdinand Magellan, a Portuguese explorer born in 1480, led a Spanish expedition consisting of five ships starting from Spain in 1519 seeking a western passage to the Spice Islands of Indonesia. In 1520, Magellan successfully navigated the passage now known as the Strait of Magellan connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. However, in 1521 Magellan was killed in a battle with local tribes on the Philippine island of Mactan, preventing him from completing the global circumnavigation he had set out to achieve.
