Mag analysis
1.
2. Mixmag The Main Article and Photo definitely stand out on the page and show that the article is about the singer Calvin Harris. The picture of Calvin is a simply close-up shot mainly there just to showcase that the article is about him, and his outfit seems to be the main description of his personality. In the left third are the main article and cover lines and also an advertisement for the free CD that comes with the Magazine. The CD advertisement takes up lot of this magazine which to me, seems unnecessary as though it helps sell the magazine, it ruins the colour scheme and the structure of the cover. The cover lines and main selling articles definitely draw your attention as some include odd situations (“Could Chewbacca fight a Camel?”) and the main article about Calvin Harris would defiantly draw in fans and people who may be interested in him or his music. This Magazine is obviously of Dance Music Genre and seems to be aimed at older teenagers and young adults . The Masthead on this magazine ‘Mixmag’ is the largest font on the cover, it is in sans serif font and is bright pink in colour. The slogo is 'biggest clubbing and music magazine‘ and the lead article and image are on Calvin Harris, a Scottish singer-songwriter and record producer. The main sells are down the side that read 'Could Chewbacca fight a camel?' and 'A DJ set at Global Gathering'
3. Kerrang The masthead, 'Kerrang!'; is a bit hard to read because it is half covered by the image from the main article which would make it hard to spot or recognise unless you already know the magazine. But although it’s hard to read, it’s very easy to pick out which makes it stand out and recognise among other magazines on a shelf. The Main Article and images are on Panic! At the Disco, a popular rock band which as mentioned before are in front of the masthead making them the biggest element on the page. I find the cover itself is a little bit overcrowded but that seems to be the style that Kerrang is going for. The use of colour and photos make this magazine cover very interesting to look at and easy to spot on a shelf. This magazine is of Rock Genre and seems to be aimed at the Teenage and Young Adults. The Masthead Kerrang is coloured in black, is in sans serif font and has a small graphic crack in it to represent broken glass in it. The slogo is 'Life is Loud and the Lead Article and images are on Panic! At the Disco, a popular rock band. The main sells are on Within Temptation (with a photo), another popular Scandinavian Rock band; and other bands like New Found Glory and HIM.
4. NME The Masthead on this magazine, ‘NME' is easy to spot as the graphics are bold and outlined, however, the masthead isn't in the centre of the page but is in the left third which is unusual for most magazines but makes it a lot easier to pick out on a shelf as it would be more visible than other magazines. The Slogo is 'New Musical Express' and the lead article and picture are on The Enemy, an English Rock Band. The main sells are on The Manic Street Preachers which also has a pull-quote, Pete Doherty (with a photo) and The Last Shadow Puppets. The cover is well laid out with everything easy to read and it is not overcrowded and the use of fonts is very co-ordinated and easy to read. The main article picture is very unusual to most pictures on Magazines as instead of being a professional picture taken in a studio, it seems to be taken from a concert which matches the article which is about their gigs coming ‘home’. This magazine is of Indie and Alternative music genre and is probably aimed at Teenagers to Young Adults.
