Madrid : the Old city centre
         The town was founded around the 9th century, in the times of
    the Muslim Emir Muhammed 1(860-886). Muhammed built the
    ‘alcazaba’ (a Moorish fortress), and a walled enclosure called the
    Almudena. Muslims, Mozarabs, Jews, Christians and Mudejares
    lived in medieval Madrid

        Later on, Madrid was part of the Kingdom of Castile, and the
    town the kings chose for their rest periods. The Royal Court
    established in Madrid 1561 for the first time, and it became
    permanent Court site definitely during the reing of King Felipe III
    (1598-1621). In the 17th century, Madrid was a city of Baroque
    splendour

       The old quarters of Madrid —the very city centre nowadays—
    was built in the times of King Felipe IV (1621-1665)
