fundamental component of
the Northwest Illinois
economy. It accounts for

In addition, these
companies spend of
millions of dollars on goods
and services from local
suppliers, which in turn
supports additional jobs
and business sales.
Manufacturers also spend

wages and benefits of their
employees. These workers,
as well as the employees of
related suppliers, spend

Methodology
This analysis was done in cooperation with the Whiteside County Department of Economic Development and was based on five counties in
Northwest Illinois (Bureau, Carroll, Lee, Ogle and Whiteside). The impacts were calculated using IMPLAN, a popular Input-Output statistical model.
The direct employment and other figures for manufacturing sector were derived from the 2016 IMPLAN model, as were the indirect
(business-to-business spending) and induced (household spending of employees) impacts. The model was adjusted to eliminate double counting in
the estimates of indirect and induced effects. As is the case with all econometric models, there are certain limitations that should be considered
when reviewing results. For more information, contact Brian Harger at the NIU Center for Governmental Studies (815.753.0934 or bharger@niu.edu).

… another 83 jobs are
supported in other industries
like healthcare,
transportation, financial and
business services and
wholesale and retail trade.

* The location quotient (LQ) provides a simple measure to compare the importance of an industry in a
region. It is the ratio of the percentage of total employment in an industry in the region compared to
that same percentage nationally. A location quotient of 1.0 indicates that the regional industry
concentration is identical to that of the U.S. LQ’s higher than 1.0 are an indication that the industry
presence is relatively stronger in the region than the national average.
