This document provides rules for beginners on stretching vowels, or madd, in Arabic recitation. It states that alif with fatha, yaa with kasra, and waw with damah should be stretched by one beat. When a letter of madd is followed by hamza within one word, it receives 4 beats of madd. But between separate words there is an option. When stopping at a word ending with a letter of madd followed by a letter with a haraka, there is an option for 2, 4, or 6 beats of madd. But if followed by a letter with a sukoon, it must be 6 beats of madd.
