Insulation represents a capital expenditure & follows the law of diminishing returns. Hence the thermal effectiveness of insulation needs to be justified by an economic limit, beyond which insulation ceases to effectuate energy recovery. To determine the effectiveness of an applied insulation, the insulation cost is compared with the associated energy losses & by choosing the thickness that gives the lowest total cost, termed as ‘Economic Thickness’.
The following tutorial provides guidance to estimate the economic thickness for natural gas piping in winter conditions as an example case study.

It is consist of air or gas compression part, gear, bearing, cooling, sealing, lube oil, and control system. In this study focused on heat exchanger for oil supply systems. Lube oil is very important to supply oil and protect bearing. Lube oil’s temperature control is vital issue to prevent system broken. Shell and tube heat exchanger is used as a cooler. In this study, HTRI Xist used to thermal design of oil cooler, with water and nanofluid. The thermal conductivity is ~9.3% higher than water. The tube side overall heat transfer coefficient of nanofluid is increased by ~9% compared to that of water.

Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) is a cryogenic mixture of low molecular weight (MW) hydrocarbons with its chief component being methane. Its uses cover a gamut of applications from domestic & industrial use, power generation, to transportation fuel in its liquid form. LNG is transported in double-hulled ships specifically designed to handle low temperatures of the order of -1620C. As of 2012, there were 360 ships transporting more than 220 million metric tons of LNG every year. [1]
When LNG is received at most terminals, it is transferred to insulated storage tanks that are built to specifically hold LNG. These tanks can be above or below ground & keep the liquid at a low temperature to minimize evaporation & compositional changes due to heat ingress from the ambient. The temperature within the tank will remain constant if the pressure is kept constant by allowing the boil off gas (BOG) to escape from the tank. This is known as auto-refrigeration. BOG is collected & used as a fuel source in the facility or on the tanker transporting it. When natural gas is needed, LNG is warmed enough using heat exchangers to vaporize it called re-gasification process, prior to transferring it to the pipeline grid to various users.
Boil-off gas (BOG) management & assessment of LNG’s thermodynamic properties are key issues in the technical assessment of LNG storage. Increased vaporization process may negatively affect the stability and safety of the stored LNG. For these reasons the rate of vaporization (boil off rate) should be precisely determined in storage terminal energy systems. [2].

For pure components, the Joback’s Method can be employed which uses basic structural information of the chemical molecule to estimate thermo-physical data. However it can be complex for equipment that contains crude oil because the plus fractions [C7+] can contain thousands of straight chain, cyclic & functional groups. Therefore by splitting and lumping the crude fractions, a smaller number of components are arrived at, to characterize and be able to apply Equation of State (EoS) correlations to estimate the fraction’s thermo-physical properties.

Fins constitute an important and integral component of sinks. It is a passive cooling technique. Plate fin heat sinks are used in varied applications owing to its low manufacturing cost, ease of manufacture and its economical way to dissipate unwanted heat. Steady state natural convection is experimentally investigated for 03 sets of vertically mounted fin heat sinks. Aluminum is used because of its high conductivity. Length and fin thickness is kept constant at 200 mm and 05 mm respectively. Fin height is successively increased as 10mm, 30mm, 50mm.Aspect Ratio for above three sets is thus 0.05, 0.15 and 0.25 respectively. The Engine cylinder is one of the major automobile components, which is subjected to high temperature variations and thermal stresses. In order to cool the cylinder, fins are provided on the cylinder to increase the rate of heat transfer. By doing thermal analysis on the engine cylinder fins, it is helpful to know the heat dissipation inside the cylinder. The principle implemented in this project is to increase the heat dissipation rate by using the invisible working fluid, nothing but air. As know, by increasing the surface area we can increase the heat dissipation rate, so designing such a large complex engine is very difficult. The main purpose of using these cooling fins is to cool the engine cylinder by air. The main aim of the project is to analyse the thermal properties by varying geometry, material, distance between the fins and thickness of cylinder fins. Parametric models of cylinder with fins have been developed to predict the transient thermal behaviour. The models are created by varying the geometry circular and also by varying thickness of the fins for both geometries. The 3D modelling software used is Pro/Engineer. Thermal analysis is done on the cylinder fins to determine variation temperature distribution over time. The analysis is done using ANSYS. Thermal analysis determines temperatures and other thermal quantities. In this thesis, using materials cast iron, Copper and Aluminium alloy 6082 are also for cylinder fin body. The present paper reports, the validation of results of modeling and simulation in CFD by experiment on the fluid flow and heat
transfer characteristics of a fin arrays with lateral circular perforation and its external dimensionally equivalent solid fin arrays
equipped on horizontal flat surface a problem of natural convection. The simulation is carried out using the fluid flow (CFX)
workbench of ANSYS 12.0. In this study, results shows that formation of the stagnant layer around the solid fin array which slowdowns
the heat dissipation rate. Increase in the fluid flow movement around the fin results increase in the heat dissipation rate. It can
be achieved by adding perforation to the fins. Natural convection is a buoyancy driven phenomenon; the state of the art of CFX was
used to carry the study of fluid flow separation and velocity field over a fin array. New designed perforated fins have an improvement
in average Nusselt number, over its external dimensionally equivalent solid fin arrays.

coolant, ambient air or any other external coolant source. Charge air cooler with offset strip fin geometry is chosen on both hot
and cold sides with fin thickness 0.15 mm, length 3.2 mm, height 5.2 mm and frequency of 18 fins per inch. The flow rate on hot
side is taken as 0.3 kg/s and cold side as 2 kg/s for air-cooled charge air cooler and for water-cooled charge air cooler on hot
side it is 0.3 kg/s and cold side is 0.265 kg/s with inlet temperature on hot side 160 oC and cold side 40 oC. With the above
conditions, performance evaluation is done on both charge air coolers. Having found water-cooled charge air cooler is having
higher effectiveness than air-cooled type, performance evaluation is carried out on water-cooled charge air cooler with varying
mass flow rates on hot side from 0.1 to 0.6 kg/s and keeping cold fluid rate constant at 0.265 kg/s and the outputs obtained are
Colburn-j factor, Fanning friction factor, heat transfer coefficient, overall heat transfer coefficient and effectiveness of heat
exchanger. From the obtained results, graphs are drawn to assess the performance of the water charge air cooler.
