INTRODUCTION:
 Lubrication is the process or technique
of using a lubricant to reduce friction
and wear and tear in a contact
between two surfaces. The study of
lubrication is a discipline in the field of
tribology.
Purpose of lubrication:
(a) It reduces friction between moving parts.
(b) it reduces wear and tear of the moving parts
c) It minimizes power loss due to friction
e) It provides cooling effect. During circulation, it carries
heat from the hot moving parts and delivers it to the
surrounding through crankcase
f) It provides cushion effect. It serves as a cushion against
the shocks of the engine.
G) It provides cleaning action Impurities such as carbon
particles are dissolved during its circulation
h) It provides a sealing action. It helps the piston rings to
provide an effective seal against high pressure gases in the
cylinder from leaking out
1) It reduces noise
Properties of lubrication system
 Viscosity
 Oilness
 Flash point
 Fire point
 Volatility
 Pour point
 Delergency
 Neutralisation
 Foaming
 Emulsification
Types of lubrication system:
The various method adopted for lubrication of IC engine are
 Petroil lubrication or mist lubrication system
 wet sump system
 dry sump system
Splash lubrication system
Pressure lubrication system
Semi pressure lubrication system
