Cleanliness is essential when lubricating aircraft bearings, flight controls, and undercarriages. Lubricants and equipment must be kept clean, and only one lubricant should be used at a time. Surfaces should be wiped clean before lubricating, and excess grease cleaned afterwards. Lubrication helps reduce friction and heat build-up while preventing corrosion to prolong the life of parts. Maintenance manuals specify the lubricants, application methods, and frequencies required for different aircraft systems.

Lubrication
1. 1. What are the safety precautions to observe when carrying out lubrication of
bearings, flight controls and undercarriages?
a) Cleanliness is essential to good lubrication. Lubricants and dispensing
equipment must be kept clean. Use only one lubricant in a grease gun or oilcan.
b) Store lubricants in a protected area. Containers should be closed at all
times when not in use.
c) Wipe grease fittings, oil holes and other lubrication points, with clean, dry
cloths before lubricating.
d) When lubricating bearings, which are vented, force grease into fittings until
old grease is extruded, unless otherwise noted.
e) When lubricating sealed bearings, use extreme care not to dislodge the seals.
f) After any lubrication, clean surplus lubricant from all but the actual
working surface.
g)avoid contact with oxygen supply
2. State some of the importance of aircraft lubrication
- reduce the friction created
-minimise heat build-up
-corrosion prevention
-prolonged life of the parts concerned
3. How often do you carry out lubrication of the aircraft parts?
-depend on the requirement inside the maintenance manual along with type of
grease and method of application
4. Can you name some of the grease and lubricants used on the aircraft?
-BMS 3-33,grease no33-general low temp.
-MIL-H-5606/BMS3-32/Fluid 41
-grease 22-orange/reddish-high temp eg.bearing
-graphite grease-grey-high friction eg screw jack
-grease no 6-yellow,little movement eg.LG
?????????????
5. Name some of the types of nipples used for lubrication of aircraft
-flush
-zerk
6. What would be the indication of successful lubrication carried out?
-new grease coming out after the old grease when correct pressure applied
7. How do you extract the information about aircraft lubrication?
-diagram in AMM chapter 12-servicing
-method of application, type of grease and frequency will be written
