Sandy Fraser presented a primer on the 3GPP Long Term Evolution (LTE) protocol at the Wireless Test World 2008 conference on June 25th. The presentation covered the high-level LTE and System Architecture Evolution, an overview of the LTE protocol stack including data flow and physical and radio resource control layer functions with a focus on handovers, the status of LTE specifications, and summaries and solutions.

This was a talk at O'Reilly UK's "Ignite" event in leeds. It tries in 20 slides/5 minutes to give an overview of what makes concurrency actually useable and fun in general purpose languages. Whilst Kamaelia is python based, a proof of concept for the core has been done in C++, Ruby & Java, and our "introduction" tutorial teaches anyone (even complete novices) how to build their own proof of concept in python.

UMTS Long Term Evolution (LTE) has emerged as the favored next step on the road for both 3GPP-based networks and for operators using a variety of cellular standards around the world. Among its many attractions are improved capacity, reduced latency, easier integration with packet-based networks that use internet protocol (IP), and lower cost-per-bit. We conclude that LTE will benefit from the use of femtocells from the outset.
