MOVE FAST AND OUTCOMPETE
Bring the network indoors,
closer to your users
Eighty percent of mobile usage occurs within
buildings, yet many users experience poor
service indoors. Glass, brick, concrete, and
other building materials weaken cellular signals
and reduce coverage. To create an excellent
in-building user experience, you need coverage
and capacity solutions that bring the cellular
signal indoors. Alcatel-Lucent offers Distributed
Antenna System (DAS) and small cell solutions
engineered to extend the reach of your
network.
DAS
DAS solutions are widely deployed because
they support multiple operators and
technologies. A DAS network can be used
to provide coverage for large indoor areas,
including public spaces with strong neutral
host requirements, such as airports, train
stations, parking garages, underground tunnels
and most sports venues. These networks are
also ideal for “sponsored” public spaces, such
as sports venues and shopping malls, which
allow for operator differentiation or operator-
unique systems to be deployed in parallel to
a neutral host solution. And DAS networks
can be deployed in large private or enterprise
spaces, like corporate campuses, hospitals,
manufacturing plants and universities, which
allow for single vendor deployments.
To address all requirements, Alcatel-Lucent
offers enhanced DAS solutions built with
unique innovations. Our basic neutral host
DAS solution allows you to dynamically shift
capacity from one part of a building to another
depending on demand. The Low Power Radio
Head (RH) DAS improves RF performance and
reduces footprint, power consumption and the
cost of radio equipment by using low power
RRHs (for example, 1W small cells) instead of
40W RRHs and attenuators.

Our Direct Baseband Unit (BBU) DAS eliminates
the need for RF processing and attenuation
panels on site by integrating the RH into the
DAS head end. Developed jointly with TE
Connectivity, this DAS option reduces the
amount of physical equipment required by
more than 50 percent, and the cost of materials
by 40 percent. Additional cost savings are also
achieved because each unit uses less power
for operation and cooling, and requires less
space and fiber. By deploying a Direct BBU DAS
in large, high-traffic venues, you can deliver
more coverage and capacity while lowering
your total cost of ownership (TCO) by as much
as 48 percent over a five year period.
Small Cells
Our small cells are low-power, small form
factor devices that can be placed almost
anywhere that people gather — indoors and
out. They provide targeted coverage, high
capacity and improved end-user QoE wherever
needed.
The 9962 Multi-Standard Enterprise Cell
with integrated Wi-Fi® is ideal for private
and enterprise spaces, such as offices,
hotels, restaurants, medical complexes, and
warehouses. For indoor public venues where
there are no strong neutral host requirements
and operator differentiation is allowed through
sponsorship, Alcatel-Lucent offers the 9764
Metro Cell Outdoor (MCO) and the 9768
Metro Radio Outdoor (MRO), as well as the
9962 Multi-Standard Enterprise Cell. All three
solutions are ideal for deployment in shopping
malls, performance halls and convention
centers.
With their different RF power output and
capacity capabilities, our small cells can cover
a variety of space and user requirements. They
enable you to deliver the quality of service
(QoS) and QoE your users expect in any indoor
environment.

Our 9768 MRO Distributed Radio System
(DRS) solution provide massive capacity for
these applications that enable you to meet
user expectations with a differentiating
service. These all-in-one radio head and
antenna modules communicate to a centralized

Densify the network by building
a HetNet with metro cells
After your LTE network has been deployed,
you’ll want to densify the network in areas
where more capacity is needed or in locations
where coverage is not sufficient. This can be
achieved by deploying more macro cells, metro
cells, and other small cells in targeted locations
and/or by deploying carrier Wi-Fi. Using two or
more of these flexible network access options
creates a heterogeneous network (HetNet)
A HetNet built with Alcatel-Lucent metro cells
provides cost-effective, ubiquitous coverage
and high capacity to deliver the superior QoE
your customers expect. Incremental capacity
for hotspots can be delivered quickly by
placing the 9764 MCO 1W or 2x1W directly
where needed. The 9764 MCO can be deployed
outdoors, either on the side of a building or on
street furniture, to provide capacity to either
outdoor or indoor hotspots. For large public
venues, you can also deploy the high capacity

carrier Wi-Fi from the same site and use the
same backhaul by simply securing the 9764
MCO integrated Wi-Fi module to the bottom of
a unit.
Alcatel-Lucent metro cells can also be used to
extend coverage to areas of the network that
macro cells do not reach. The 9764 MCO 1W
and 2x1W are ideal for reaching canyon-like
urban areas between high rise buildings. And
the 9768 MRO 2X5W is ideal for beaming
coverage into floors of high rise buildings from
an outdoor location.

Ready for virtualized RAN and 5G
Virtualized RAN (vRAN) is where network
functions at the RAN level are reorganized
and virtualized using Network Function
Virtualization (NFV) to enable them to run
on General Purpose Platforms (GPPs). With
virtualization, functions, like base band
processing in the BBUs, go from being highly
distributed to being more centralized and
pooled. Other functions, such as video caching,
go from being highly centralized to be being
more distributed by moving closer to the
network edge. By virtualizing functions,
you can improve the performance of your
networks, increase network efficiency and
adaptability, lower TCO and improve QoE.
Alcatel-Lucent is at the forefront of vRAN
development with the first radio network
controller (RNC) function to be virtualized
and ported onto a GPP platform. Our Wireless
Cloud Element (WCE) has been running live in
the Etisalat network since the spring of 2014.
We also showcased our live virtualized BBU
(vBBU) prototype, which was developed in
conjunction with China Mobile, and announced
a strategic partnership with Intel to boost
vRAN development and adoption at MWC
2014. The first customer trial for our vRAN is
targeted for 2015.
Although 5G has not yet been defined by
any standard body, work on the first steps
to building 5G has already started. Alcatel-
Lucent is contributing to the IMT-2020
recommendations being developed by the
ITU-R and actively contributes to 3GPP, which
is expected to start a 5G study in 2015 with
release 14 and have the final specification
(release 15) ready by 2018-19. Plus, Bell
Labs is researching a new 5G air interface,
virtualization of network functions, and other
ways to optimize mobile communications.
As 5G will build on 4G LTE, Alcatel-Lucent
is also continuing to work on LTE-A, the
implementation of HetNets with small cells,
and requirements for transitioning to a cloud
architecture, which we believe are stepping
stones to 5G.
