Our mission is to identify students who face barriers to education and to guide each one on to a successful path toward continued education, a meaningful career, and productive adulthood. The 25 Youth Building Alternatives Students at LearningWorks in Portland this winter have settled into a steady groove of learning how to prepare for life in their twenties and beyond through hands-on construction skills training, culinary arts training, and academic coursework. Over the past few months, students have gained job skills, completed community service hours, received certifications, and achieved academic gains in preparation for careers or further education.

The students worked with a local community center to address nutrition and health needs in the community. They developed (1) a database of healthy recipes tailored to the center's available foods and the community's preferences, (2) icons to identify recipes meeting specific dietary criteria, and (3) nutrition workshops featuring lectures, brochures, and cooking demonstrations focusing on reducing fat, sugar, and sodium. Both the community and students benefited - the community received nutrition education and materials, while students gained applied research and interpersonal skills. Future work includes evaluating workshop efficacy through pre- and post-testing.
World Food Day - Akshaya Patra’s Role in Ending Hunger
Akshaya Patra is a non-profit organization that operates school meal programs across India. For World Food Day, they discuss their role in ending childhood hunger by providing meals to over 1.6 million children through their Mid-Day Meal Programme. This program encourages school attendance by providing nutritious meals to children from underserved areas. Akshaya Patra operates large centralized kitchens as well as smaller decentralized kitchens run by local women's groups to prepare and deliver meals tailored to local diets and customs. Their goal is that no child in India should be deprived of an education due to lack of food.

Common Roots connects farmers, educators, youth, families, and the wider community in building a sustainable future through place-based education and service programs. By collectively growing food for our schools, families, and food shelves, we celebrate the soil and soul of community. Our stewardship provides food security, affirms our local environment, and nurtures our common roots.

The students worked with a local community center to address nutrition and health needs in the community. They developed (1) a database of healthy recipes tailored to the center's available foods and the community's preferences, (2) icons to identify recipes meeting specific dietary criteria, and (3) nutrition workshops featuring lectures, brochures, and cooking demonstrations focusing on reducing fat, sugar, and sodium. Both the community and students benefited - the community received nutrition education and materials, while students gained applied research and interpersonal skills. Future work includes evaluating workshop efficacy through pre- and post-testing.
World Food Day - Akshaya Patra’s Role in Ending Hunger
Akshaya Patra is a non-profit organization that operates school meal programs across India. For World Food Day, they discuss their role in ending childhood hunger by providing meals to over 1.6 million children through their Mid-Day Meal Programme. This program encourages school attendance by providing nutritious meals to children from underserved areas. Akshaya Patra operates large centralized kitchens as well as smaller decentralized kitchens run by local women's groups to prepare and deliver meals tailored to local diets and customs. Their goal is that no child in India should be deprived of an education due to lack of food.

FoodFight Fundraising Deck

Wisconsin nutrition education program (WNEP)

School Meals Leaders Guide

Fremont High School piloted a "Grab-N-Go" breakfast program where students could pick up a bagged breakfast on their way into school and eat it in class. This increased participation in the breakfast program and improved students' eating habits.
Urban Promise Academy made changes to improve the nutritional quality of foods offered at breakfast and lunch, started growing their own foods in a school garden, and worked to influence healthier eating habits for students and their families.
At West Oakland Middle School, a school garden provided students experiential nutrition education and influenced families' food choices. Cooking classes and a backpack food program also aimed to improve healthy eating habits for students and their families.

Bristow Elementary School Nutrition Manager Wins National Recognition (National Harbor, MD, June 2014) – The national, non-profit School Nutrition Association has awarded Amanda Jones from Bristow Elementary School in Warren County Public Schools the regional Louise Sublette Award of Excellence in School Nutrition, considered the highest honor a school nutrition manager can earn. The award recognizes a manager who has demonstrated dedication and ingenuity by successfully implementing a project to improve his or her school meal program. On the front lines of child nutrition, Amanda Jones significantly strengthened her school’s breakfast program, creating awareness and increasing participation. With an emphasis on overall health and wellness, Amanda worked to engage students through a variety of creative activities, including the Bear Chefs Kids’ Cooking Club, where students are exposed to kitchen safety, food preparation and creation of healthy recipes that likely end up on the breakfast food line. She also hosts a Bring a Buddy to School Breakfast Day event, successfully reaching students that typically don’t eat breakfast at school. Committed to providing nutritious meals to as many students as possible, Amanda continues to promote the breakfast program through town meeting announcements, fliers, decorated bulletin boards and monthly giveaways. “This award emphasizes the commitment school nutrition professionals put forth each and every day, leading programs with inventive thinking and effective planning that directly aid students,” said Leah Schmidt, SNS, President of the School Nutrition Association. “Amanda’s determination has shone through, and she continues to find new and creative ways to cater to her students’ needs.” The annual award is in memory of Louise Sublette, a leader in school nutrition in Tennessee and in the national School Nutrition Association. During her 43 years in the profession, Sublette worked in many areas of foodservice—public schools, colleges, hospitals and elderly feeding programs.
