This document describes an 8-stage model of organizational maturity for multilingual communications. It provides descriptions of where organizations are typically at for each stage in terms of scope, organization, process focus, and budget/costs. The stages progress from reactive to proactive. The first 4 stages (Ad-Hoc, Conscious, Brute-Force, High Risk) involve perceptions of translation as a commodity versus strategic value. The last 3 stages (Managed, Mature, Turnkey) involve more standardized, optimized processes and seeing translation as an investment versus cost. The document provides risks and recommendations for how to help organizations at each stage improve and progress to the next level of maturity.
