LSC FOOTBALL
Texas A&M-Commerce improved to 4-0 for the first time since 1990 to remain atop the Lone Star Conference
standings. West Texas A&M is a game back at 3-1. The Lions and Buffs face off this week in Commerce, Texas.
Here is a closer look at last week’s games:
• A&M-C captured a thrilling 41-40 win over Angelo State on a game-winning field goal.
• WT won its fourth consecutive game with a 34-13 victory over No. 25 Midwestern State.
• Tarleton State broke five senior college-era school records in an 80-14 victory over Texas A&M-Kingsville.
• The Greyhounds earned their first-ever triumph over McMurry, 62-23, which broke the program record
for points in a road game.
This week’s schedule includes four LSC contests with WT at A&M-C, TSU at ENMU, ASU at TAMUK, and McM
at MSU.
LSC football teams are 24-20 overall this season. The squads are 5-1 combined versus the Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, Great Lakes Valley Conference and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference
teams, which are also in NCAA Super Regional Four.
LSC FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS
After playing seven conference games apiece over the first nine weeks of an 11-week regular season, the Lone
Star Conference’s eight football teams will split into two brackets to conduct a two-week conference playoff.
The conference champion and playoff seeding will be determined by regular season results with the higher
seeds hosting each round.
The top four teams (No. 4 at No. 1 and No. 3 at No. 2) comprise the championship bracket with Week 10
winners playing for the playoff title in Week 11, whereas Week 10 losers will meet for third place. The other
half of the bracket includes the remaining four teams with No. 8 at No. 5 and No. 7 at No. 6 in Week 10. The
winners will play for fifth-place in Week 11, while the losers meet in the seventh-place game.
PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
OFFENSIVE
E’lon Spight, Eastern New Mexico University, SR, RB, St. Louis, Mo., Hazelwood East HS/Grossmont College
Spight led the Greyhounds at McMurry and set career highs, with 189 rushing yards and four touchdowns. On
his 27 carries, he averaged an incredible seven yards and crossed the first-down marker 11 times. Spight is just
the sixth ENMU player since the 1998 season to score four touchdowns in a game. His performance helped the
Hounds to set a new team record for points in a road game at 62. The previous record stood since the 1990
season.
DEFENSIVE
Carter James, West Texas A&M University, R-FR, LB, Justin, Texas, Northwest HS
James was all over the field in the Buffs’ 34-13 upset win over No. 25 Midwestern State Saturday night. He
tallied his fourth game of double-digit tackles this season and a career-high 21 total tackles, including nine solo
stops...James added a sack for four yards and had a career-best three tackles for loss for 10 yards in the win.
In the passing game, WT held MSU to just 72 yards passing for the game and just one passing yard at halftime.
SPECIAL TEAMS
Saul Martinez, Texas A&M University - Commerce, SR, K, Pittsburg, Texas, Pittsburg HS
Martinez connected on his first attempt in the second quarter, a 30-yard boot, to give the Lions a 17-16 lead.
Little did he know at the time that the Lions would go down by as many as 13 points, 30-17, only to rally and
provide Martinez with the opportunity for the game-winning kick and another one point lead. After missing
a 39-yard kick at the halftime buzzer, Martinez would go until the 2:04 mark in the fourth quarter before he
would get another chance. This time from 37-yards out Martinez kicked it true as the Lions escaped with the
41-40 win over ASU.
OTHER TOP PERFORMERS
Geremy Alridge-Mitchell, West Texas A&M University, had a career-high 33 carries and a career-high 163
yards to go along with two touchdowns in the Buffs’ 34-13 upset of No. 25 Midwestern State. Alridge-Mitchell
tallied his fourth consecutive game of over 100 yards rushing and fifth consecutive game of scoring a touchdown
on the ground and second straight game of two touchdowns. He also added a 47-yard kick return as he leads
the nation in kick returns at 41 yards per return.
Collin Strahan, Tarleton State University, lifted Tarleton State back into the win column Saturday night in the
Texans’ record-setting 80-14 win against Texas A&M-Kingsville. Strahan led Tarleton to an 80-point explosion,
which is the most points scored by Tarleton in a game since becoming a senior college in 1961. The junior
signal caller from Mesquite broke his own school record for rushing yards by a quarterback with a career-high
136 yards on 19 carries and three rushing scores. He was also successful through the air, going 20-35 on pass
attempts for 206 yards and a pair of scores. With 342 total yards, Strahan combined for 53-percent of Tarleton’s
total yardage of 644, which was just four yard shy of the school’s senior college-era record. Strahan did not go
down for a single negative rush on the night and completed passes to nine different Texan receivers. Strahan’s
offense also set the school record for first downs in a game with 43.

Ryan Byrd, Angelo State University, set a season
high in rushing yards and receiving yards against Texas
A&M-Commerce. The junior led all rushers with 120
yards on 16 carries and scored one touchdown. He
averaged 7.5 yards per carry. The Lake Elsinore, Calif.,
native also caught six balls for 80 yards. He scored on
a 7-yard pass from Kyle Washington in the second
quarter. He was the Rams leader in all-purpose yards
with 200.
Vernon Johnson, Texas A&M University -
Commerce, hauled in nine catches for 113 yards and
three touchdowns. Johnson caught the Lions opening
touchdown pass from Deric Davis to start the scoring.
His second TD reception came on a 39-yard bomb
from Tyrik Rollison. Johnson saw Rollison in trouble
and beat his man to back of the end zone and made
an impressive catch keeping both feet inbounds,
while maintaining possession. Johnson’s third TD
came on another four-yard strike from Davis. This
time Johnson beat his man on a slant to the inside
and gave Davis plenty of space to deliver the pass.
On the Lions’ game-winning drive, Johnson played a
huge role hauling in a 23-yard catch on a crucial 3rd
and 14 that could have halted the drive before it got
started.
Charles Woods, Texas A&M University - Commerce,
led the Lions defense and all defensive players with
a game-high 16 tackles. Woods as a major cog in
the defense shutting down the LSC’s second leading
rushing attack during the game. Woods, who is
ranked 33rd in the NCAA in tackles for a loss and third
in the LSC, had a half tackle for loss in the contest. He
has led the team in tackles in all but one game and
is third in the LSC and 15th in the NCAA. Not only
did he play a pivotal role stopping the run, but Woods
batted down arguable the biggest pass in the game.
With the Lions trailing by two points and without the
ball, Woods stepped up and batted down ASU’s Kyle
Washington’s third down pass to provide the stop for
the Lions. The following offensive possession A&M-Commerce
drove down the field and kicked what
would be the game-winning field goal.
Rush Seaver, Angelo State University, continued
recording double-digit tackles. The senior made 15
stops and a half tackle for loss against Texas A&M-Commerce.
It is the fourth-straight game that Seaver
has tallied double-digit stops. He moved into No. 7
on the ASU all-time career tackles list with the 15
tackles.
Alex Anderson, Tarleton State University, a senior
linebacker from Wills Point, enjoyed a career night
for Tarleton State in a record-setting 80-14 win over
Texas A&M-Kingsville on Homecoming last Saturday.
For the first time in his career, Anderson led the team
in tackles with his first double-digit performance (11).
Of his 11 tackles, three were solo stops and one was
for a six-yard loss. Anderson and the Tarleton defense
completely dominated the football game by holding
the Javelinas to just 215 yards of total offense,
including just 38 yards passing.
Seth Bailey, Eastern New Mexico University, set
the tone against McMurry, when he registered a pick
six on the War Hawk’s first possession of the game.
He paced the Greyhound defense with seven tackles,
which included 2.5 for a loss and a sack. Bailey also
had two passes broken up and a quarterback hurry.
His interception return was the first for a score, this
season.
Blake Barnes, Tarleton State University, broke the
Tarleton State senior college-era school record for
PATs made and attempted in the Texans’ record 80-14
victory over Texas A&M-Kingsville Saturday night. The
junior from Stephenville was a perfect 12-12 on all
of his attempted field goals, including 11-11 on extra
points and 1-1 on a 19-yard first-half field goal. His 11
PATs topped the previous record of eight, which was
set in 1994 and tied three times in 2001-02, while the
11 attempts bested the previous record of nine PATs
which has stood since 1994. In addition to his career
night of kicking, Barnes also had two punts and three
kickoffs.
Conner Hollabaugh, West Texas A&M University,
had another great night kicking as he tallied two field
goals (20, 34 yards) in the Buffs’ 34-13 upset win
over No. 25 Midwestern State. Hollabaugh also had
seven kickoffs for 427 yards for a 61.0 average and
three touchbacks. The Buffs allowed just 79 yards on
four kickoff returns with the longest being 25 yards.
Hollabaugh is 11 of 12 in field goals and 23 of 25 in
extra-points for the season. He also is averaging 62.6
yards per kickoff with 15 touchbacks in 42 kicks.
Kevin Reaves, Eastern New Mexico University,
had four punt returns against McMurry for 84 yards.
His 24-yard return in the second quarter set ENMU
up in McMurry territory and led to a Greyhound
touchdown. He also had a 24-yard return at the
end of the third quarter, which also led to another
touchdown. Reaves’ longest return of the day was
a 31-yard sprint in the fourth quarter, which gave
Eastern the ball near midfield.

Angelo State
The Rams dropped to 3-2 on the season and 2-2 in
the LSC after a 41-40 loss to Texas A&M-Commerce …
Ryan Byrd set season highs in rushing yards (120) and
receiving yards (80) while scoring two touchdowns
on the night … Rush Seaver led ASU with 15 tackles
on the night and it marks the fourth-straight game he
has made double-digit stops … The Rams defense was
able to force four Lion turnovers (three interceptions,
one fumble recovery) … Richard Franklin, Fred
Lawrence and Jarred Ross each had interceptions and
Franklin had the fumble recovery … ASU was able
to score 24 points off the four turnovers … ASU will
travel to Kingsville this Saturday to play Texas A&M-Kingsville
at 7 p.m.
Eastern New Mexico
The Greyhounds earned their first-ever win over
McMurry and did it in dominant fashion. Seth Bailey’s
interception on the War Hawk’s first possession led
to an early lead for ENMU. E’lon Spight became the
sixth player to score at least four rushing touchdowns
in a game for the Hounds since the 1998 season.
Spight also rushed for a career-best 189 yards. The
performance led to Eastern scoring 62 points, to
shatter the team record for points in a road game,
set on September 22, 1990 at New Mexico Highlands.
Since a setback at Incarnate Word, last season, ENMU
has won seven straight road games. Eastern will host
Tarleton State, on Saturday.
McMurry
Senior receiver Jeret Smith had seven receptions
for 168 yards in Saturday’s loss to Eastern New
Mexico, as he continues to ascend the McM career
receiving charts. Smith has 157 career receptions,
No. 3 on McM’s all-time list, 4 behind No. 2 spot
occupied by Rory Peacock (1997-2000) at 161. Smith
also ranks No. 4 in receiving yards at 2,177; just
111 yards behind No. 3 Dusty Thornhill (2004-07)
at 2,288. On Oct. 4, Smith became the 5th player in
McM history to garner 2,000-plus receiving yards,
joining Rory Peacock (2,634), Greg Livingston (2,523),
Dusty Thornhill (2,288) and Reggie Sterns (2,025).
McMurry’s loss to ENMU was also the first setback to
the Greyhounds in the series, now standing at 6-1-1
in McM’s favor. Saturday was also the first team that

the two teams had met on the gridiron since Dwight
D. Eisenhower was President (1959).
Midwestern State
Midwestern State is 3-2 overall and is 2-2 in Lone
Star Conference play … MSU fell to West Texas A&M
34-13 last Saturday, marking the first time for MSU
to lose two games in October since 2010 (10/9/10
loss at Abilene Christian 31-28 and 10/23/10 loss at
West Texas A&M 42-29). It was also the first time
for MSU to have consecutive losses in October since
2008 (10/4/08 loss at WTAMU 42-14 and 10/11/08
loss to Tarleton State 37-16) ... With the loss to WT,
the Mustangs fell from the AFCA Division II Coaches
Poll after four straight weeks in the Top 25 … MSU
received votes in the AFCA poll for the 46th straight
ranking period and has received at least one vote in
the poll in 103 or the last 104 polls … MSU fumbled
once in the game with WT taking the ensuing drive
for a touchdown. It marked the fifth TD off an
MSU turnover (out of eight) in the last three games
and a total of six scores out of the eight miscues …
Sophomore running back Dante Taylor recorded
his fourth 100-yard game of the season, equaling
his career high of 159 yards on 18 carries. It is his
seventh career 100-yard game, moving him into a tie
for sixth all-time at MSU … The highlight for Taylor was
his 80-yard scamper for a touchdown in the second
quarter … Taylor is averaging 115.8 yards a game on
the ground, second in the Lone Star Conference and
26th in NCAA Division II … Junior Marqui Christian
returned after missing the last two games and picked
up where he left off. Christian recorded his third
straight double-digit tackle game this season with 10
at West Texas A&M. Christian now has eight career
games of 10 or more stops … MSU threw for only 72
yards against West Texas A&M, the first time since
Nov. 17, 2012 that MSU has thrown for less than 75
yards (74 yards vs. Indianapolis) … MSU ran for 344
yards against West Texas A&M, the most this season
and the most since rolling up 412 yards against Menlo
(Calif.) on Nov. 2, 2013 … Midwestern State is home
for the next two weeks as they host McMurry and
Texas A&M-Commerce … Saturday’s game will be the
22nd meeting between McMurry and MSU with the
Mustangs holding an 11-9-1 lead in the series.
Tarleton State
Tarleton State broke five of Tarleton’s senior college-era
school records in an 80-14 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville.
In addition to the records, Tarleton State
also got career-best performances from several
athletes such as Tyler Wright and Alex Anderson.
Wright posted his first 100-yard receiving game with
108 yards on eight catches while Anderson had his
first career 10-tackle game as he led the defense
with 11 stops. Jabari Anderson, Glenn Roberts,
Zed Woerner and JaMarquis Durst also had career
milestones as Anderson and Roberts each rushed for
two touchdowns – the first of which were the first
career scores for both – while Woerner threw his first
career passing touchdown to Durst, who hauled in
the score on his first collegiate reception.
Texas A&M-Commerce
The No. 23 Lions are ranked in the AFCA Top 25
Coaches’ Poll for the first time since 2001 when the
team held the 24th spot for two weeks in October
... The team is 14th in the Massey ratings...A&M-Commerce
is coming off of a 41-40 thrilling win
over Angelo State on a game-winning field goal ...
Prior the Saturday’s win, the Lions defeated the co-defending
LSC champions for the second consecutive
week handing Tarleton State a 53-25 on Oct. 4 after
defeating ENMU 48-32 on Sept. 27...The Lions enter
the game at 283-208-12 in 503 LSC games...A&M-Commerce
is 4-0 in LSC play for the first time since
starting the 1990 LSC schedule 4-0 with wins over
Central Oklahoma, Texas A&M-Kingsville, West Texas
A&M and Eastern New Mexico ... The Lions went
undefeated in LSC play with a perfect 7-0 record that
season.
Texas A&M-Kingsville
Tarleton State University (2-3, 2-2 LSC) gave its
homecoming crowd a historic game as the Texans set
a school record with 80 points and 11 touchdowns
to defeat Texas A&M University-Kingsville (1-5,
0-4 LSC), 80-14, on Saturday evening at Memorial
Stadium. Shawn Vasquez led all Javelina players with
15 carries for 102 yards. Trey Mitchell finished 6-of-
20 and added 72 yards on the ground. A bright spot
on special teams was the leg of Jonathan Robinson,
who was punting in his first collegiate game. The 6-5
freshman from Navarre, Fla. aired 48 yards and 49
yards late in the third frame and averaged 39.9 yards/
punt on seven attempts.
West Texas A&M
The Buffs won their fourth consecutive game with a
34-13 victory over No. 25 Midwestern State Saturday
evening...The Buffs held the Mustangs scoreless for
the first time in the first quarter this season...Junior
running back Geremy Alridge-Mitchell had his fourth
100-yard rushing game and scored two touchdowns
with a career-high 163 yards on a career-high 33
carries...Senior wide receiver Anthony Johnson tallied
six catches for 123 yards bringing him within 43 yards
(1,909) of the top 10 in school history in career
receiving yards...Senior Jeremy Watson had 113 yards
receiving on five catches with two touchdowns...
It was the first time since Nov. 30, 2013, with two
receivers over 100 yards...Alridge-Mitchell, who leads
the nation in kick returns at over 40 per return, had
a 47-yard return against MSU upping his average to
41 yards per return on nine returns for 369 yards...
Johnson needs just 19 catches to break into the top
10 in receptions also...After not kicking a field goal
against McMurry, sophomore Conner Hollabaugh
kicked two against Midwestern State...WT entered
the game Saturday ranked 10th nationally in red zone
defesne holding teams to a .920 clip and improved
upon that as MSU went 0 of 2 in the red zone with
two goal line stops...WT also held MSU to 0 of 3 on
fourth down with two goal line stops and a turnover
on downs on the WT 28...It was the third consecutive
game of tallying over 500 yards as the Buffs had 505,
with 537 against McMurry and a season-high 637
at Angelo State...WT held MSU to 416 yards of total
offense which is the second-lowest of the season
(Shorter, 236) and held the Mustangs to just 72 yards
receiving marking the second time WT has held a
team under 100 yards receiving this season (12 vs.
Shorter)...Junior punter Elliot Moore had three punts
for 47 yards and pinned the Mustangs at their own
one for the second consecutive week he pinned the
opposition inside the five...Quarterback Preston
Rabb had another outstanding game as he went 18
of 26 for 308 yards and two touchdowns...For the
last two weeks, Rabb has missed just 15 passes (43-
58) and hasn’t thrown an interception since Sept. 20
for a span of three straight games...The 308 yards
is the third consecutive game of over 300 yards for
Rabb...Alridge-Mitchell’s two touchdowns mark the
second consecutive game of two touchdowns on the
ground...He is averaging 188.2 all-purpose yards per
game...The Buff “D” again shutdown the Mustangs
in the second half, allowing just one score in the
second stanza. WT has outscored the opposition
in its four wins in the second half 95-13...The Buffs
now have won two-straight in the series against MSU
and improved to 7-8 all-time in Canyon against the
Mustangs...It marked the 493rd win in school history
for WT and the 15th win for head coach Mike Nesbitt.
