Kniffen studied different types of houses in Louisiana in the 1930s. He identified and classified 9 main house types based on their floor plans, roof shapes, porches, and other architectural elements. These house types reflected the relationship between the natural environment and local culture, where the culture adapted housing structures to the nature of the landscape. Kniffen mapped these house types to show how they were structured according to the natural features of their areas.
